A DOGged grip on colonialism

David Koon notes: It's not exactly surprising that British colonialism would still hold sway at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, also one of the last redoubts of the Confederacy.

The AP copy refers to the city where the terrorism is unfolding as Mumbai. (History of name, officially changed 12 years ago, here.)

Never mind troubling facts. It is Bombay in the Democrat-Gazette. Stiff upper lip, Leftenant Cholmondoley. Strike up a chorus of "British Grenadiers." (And then "Dixie" for the traitorous David O. Dodd, while you're at it.) The Raj -- and the South -- may yet rise again.

PS -- David Koon never sleeps apparently. Had it not been for his call, I'd have slumbered through last night's Pressly case developments. Thanks, David, for all.

Is it still Rhodesia? And the Belgian Congo?

Speaking of Mumbai: Today's NY Times, the national edition, had a more dramatic front page photo than that chosen by the D-G. It showed people escaping down the face of the burning Taj hotel by means of knotted-together draperies or bedsheets. I can't find the image on-line at the moment, but it's a chiller. This page at Getty images has several thumbnails of similar scenes.

Comments

israeli media (haaretz, jerusalem post) notes up to a few dozen israelis may be among the hostages (some at the jewish/kosher Chabad center, one of the 10 attacked sites, the others at the hotels)

detailed coverage notably absent in the american and british news reports (most curiously the NY Times and the ADG)

Don't look for many Myanmar Shave ads in the Democrat.

The little effete Texas-BBQ-expert twit who reigns over there at the D*G still imagines himself as some third rate Confederate Rudyard Kipling.

Either Mumbai or Bombay are fine with me. The AP Stylebook changed to Mumbai only a year or two ago. I can't deduce that the Dem-Gaz editors are colonialists for calling the city Bombay. Most Arkansans I've talked to have never heard of Mumbai, but they recognize Bombay.

The more interesting question is whether this attack will be traced back to Pakistan's ISI or General Kayani. They were implicated in the bombing of India's embassy in Kabul earlier this year.

Ah yes, The demozette!

All the Dixiecrat Conservative opinions you ever wanted to find with National and International News articles copied from the WaPo and NYT wire while the Editorial and OpEd page have their stylebook permanently set to NYT is a synonym for Commie, Liberal.

I'm surprised the Dixiecrat editors haven't been shilling the latest Regnery product, Click.

But I guess they've been too busy hyping Huckabeen's latest.

If Walter and Paul don't want to recognize change, let them go back to being the Arkansas Democrat and let the Arkansas Gazette name resi in peace.

Hey - they also attributed the "redder" vote in the former slave states to the "Scots-Irish migration/settlement pattern." Revisionism - WHAT a concept!!!! We're thinking it's racism, pure and simple...but they have dressed it up as something, possibly noble. Go figure!

I'm stuffed, headed for slumberland.

Every year when I send my annual payment, I always make the check payable "Arkansas Democrat" (no Gazette) and they have never failed to cash it. Curious, eh?

Hussboy may have purchased the Gazette name, but he didn't buy their integrity (think 1957).
