Be grateful you don't live in Orange County, Calif. The TV images of the wildfires are scary enough. I've been hearing from family there, too. Their car is packed as they watch nervously the smoke from nearby Diamond Bar wildfires in one direction and the burned-out local high school just down the hill in the other direction. It sounds nerve-wracking.

To all the NICE, caring people here (we were 'on the town' last night) we HAVE found a sweet dog!! Right under our nose at the local shelter was Allie (6 mo., white, maybe lab/shepherd, pic later) who was actually 'overdue' to be whacked based upon the rules established by the Morons who run our county. Thankfully the shelter operator actually cares about abused animals, and hung on to her simply because she was too sweet to put down. She was supposed to be uethenized on 10/30; I saw her Friday, the lovely wife yesterday, and she'll be here in her new home by midweek, after she is neutered. THANKS so much for the tips, emails and just giving a crap that we find a new dog!!!!!!!

Friendship among Women:
A woman didn't come home one night. The next morning she told her husband that she had slept over at a friend's house. The man called his wife's 10 best friends. None of them knew anything about it.
Friendship among Me n:
A man didn't come home one night. The next morning he told his wife that he had slept over at a friend's house. The woman called her husband's 10 best friends. Eight confirmed that he had slept over, and two said he was still there.

This sounds like a good idea to me.
Please pass this on this holiday season.
When mailing your Christmas cards this year,
take
one card and send it to this address.
If we pass this on and everyone sends one card,
think of how many cards these wonderful special people who have
sacrificed
so much would get.
When you are making out your Christmas card list
this year, please include the following:
* A Recovering American Soldier
c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center
6900 Georgia Avenue,NW
Washington,D.C. 20307-5001 *
If you approve, please pass it on.
Thanks ALiJB

Jazzy, that's a lovely thought. Thank you for sharing.
Did anyone else notice the strange stillness last night? The hubster and I were looking for a bite to eat (at this point he has to drive; I can't sit up well enough to get in the driver's seat) and we both noticed there were few people out. Went down Cantrell and encountered just a few cars. Saw just one vehicle in front of NYPD (the pizza place) and just three in front of Cross Eyed Pig. And this was 7:30pm! Perhaps it's hibernation time and we didn't get the message?

Larry,
That's heartwarming. We adopted our little Scottie-Westie mix from the pound just after Christmas last year. Now we are thinking of getting her a brother or sister.
And dear Jazzy, what a wonderful idea! I'm addressing one right now so I won't forget. Or maybe 10 or 15, why not?

Jazzy and others:
Please note that SOME "cards to soldiers" campaigns have been thwarted because of security reasons (fear of Anthrax powders, etc.).
Also, there may be severe restrictions on cards in approved programs.
You may want to check out details at Snopes (click link) or other appropriate locations to make sure your efforts are successful.

Perhaps Christmas postcards might be an option? Hard to hide anthrax when there's nothing to hide it in.

Larry - that's why my dog is named JD. He didn't quite make it to Judgement Day.
Allie will make a great addition to your family. Enjoy!

My blogname is a reference to a little pound pooch we found a few years ago. She is priceless. She has big expressive eyes, a long body, short legs and a curled up tail. Almost solid black, she is the perfect silhouette of gravy boat. When folks ask about her breed the answer is that she's a bugeyed little freak. She takes my verbal slights so no one else has to and is quite skilled at catching a tossed peanut. I use the blogname as a reminder not to take myself seriously [not that it always works.]

Interesting story from Daily Kos about property seizure. I guess you don't have to be a drug dealer or even a criminal to have your property seized.
Click on the blue name.

Jazzy, Kizzy, et al: I'm not an expert or authority on these "card shower" things.
I just remember last year when some email program circulated requesting cards be mailed to "Any Soldier in Iraq" or some such thing. I don't recall the specific details, but the thrust of it was that the army would not deliver mail unless it was specifically and accurately addressed to an individual recipient for fear someone would take advantage of that sort of "mass mailing" to inflict some terroristic harm. And they most especially would not deliver packages so addressed, for fairly obvious reasons. You know about letter bombs and package bombs and those sorts of things.
"There is no good thing that cannot be abused."
There may be more than one approved program now. I just decided to check Snopes to see if there were still warnings and found that there is AT LEAST ONE approved program, but cards have to meet their strict restrictions or they'll be rejected.
I think it's a great idea to show our support for our troops and I regret that there are malicious people out there who would abuse the good and heart-felt intentions of a grateful nation to harm the ones we love and want to support by a show of our concern and appreciation.
I hope my caution will not be a detriment to the effort. Instead, I hope it will enable us to respond within the guidelines so that our intentions and efforts will be rewarded with success. Who deserves it more than they who have served at such personal sacrifice?!

kizzy- It happened back in 1989 when the War on Drugs was in full swing. The police never did let Ethel Hylton see the dog that sniffed her bag. Was there a dog??
And it could all happen again today to any of us! I just can't believe I didn't know that could happen in the U.S.

Whoa Nelly! Spank the dogs and bring in the laundry Granny, looks like Dan Rather might be eating ole CBS alive! Click on my name to read about Dan finding out some mighty interesting things about the behavior of that leftist elitist liberal CBS, which maybe should be renamed the Conservative Broadcasting System.
We all know Rather had the goods on AOL George W. Bush. Rather's lawsuit may not uncover the truth about all that since it's so very well hidden, but he's sure finding out a lot of surprising things about CBS. Shall President Obama look into that snakeball next year too?

A quick check of Snopes will show that you can send cards thru the Red Cross - Holiday Cards for Heroes. I understand after a quick read that the cards will go not only to wounded soldiers but to soldiers everywhere. I think it is a good idea, especially if we take the time to write good messages in the cards. There are security worries, etc., but if my quick check was right, it will work.

I also hope Rather wins his lawsuit even tho I don't like watching him much. It is time for there to be some merit to truth, not just letter of the law.
I really want a little dog some day, because I miss my little Lhasa (Sophie). Sophie was our sweetheart but she followed my youngest across the street to play when he was 10, and didn't make it. I haven't had a dog since and I still live on that busy street, so I need to find one that isn't venturesome. Any new puppy would also have to be one that could share love and home with a fat, lazy, bad tempered cat until the cat reaches the end of her days. I don't like cats at all, but she was dumped on me and I take care of her. She is huge and not very healthy, but resists with a vengeance all efforts to make her more healthy or sociable. She's one of those cats that believes she allows humans to live in HER house as long as they do HER bidding.
Maybe someday - I really miss Sophie's love and companionship. The love of a dog for its family is like no other....

Ci.Ci and all:

Participants should limit the number of cards they submit to 25 from any one person or 50 from any one class or group.
