Breaking down the Ark. vote

An upstanding member of the Blog's Loyal Opposition sends a useful link to CNN's exit polling for the state. (Link fixed.) Exit polling is not high science, Nate Silver has educated us, but it's still interesting. Only 95 percent of the black vote in Arkansas went for Obama? Blacks accounted for 12 percent of the vote.

My source is a glass half-full Republican, by the way. Looking at Arkansas, he sees a state that went overwhelmingly for McCain, that picked up seats in the legislature despite stout opposition from the Democratic governor and that showed a ready reception to anti-gay themes. You may be sure Republicans are hard at work looking for ways to hone that last political tool, though I'm not sure what's left. Mandatory stoning?

He also provides the map above from NYT which shows the relative handful of U.S. counties that registered increasing support for a Republican this year. Note with horror ground zero of this perverse trend.

Please read Andrew Sullivan on the revocation of marriage rights for gay people in California. It's equally applicable to all, such as the Arkansas Family Council and opportunistic Republicans, who seek to marginalize this minority.

Ernest Dumas writes on Obama's victory in the Arkansas Leader today.

We have another theory about what guided Obama voters. Famously, George Bush was the fellow everyone would like to quaff a beer with, though he had given up hard drink. People this time decided that intelligence and competence were better requisites in a national leader than chumminess. People had tried ignorance and ineptitude, and they had not worked.

Er, not in Arkansas, though. Not even close. Commentary on our intelligence, maybe?

A PS for Assmunch: Here's the county-by-county result. Grant County leads the pack with a 74 percent McCain vote. Even Benton County could only muster 67.

"Just 95% of blacks voted for Obama"? That may be a close to a united voting block as this nation will see.

Still, I wonder how they collected that demographic. Did they do it by skin color or self described ethnicity.

Think red-meat moral issues are dead? Think again.

A traditional view of marriage and of families won everywhere it was up for election across our country last night, even in California. That's conservatism (as opposed to the war hero/cap-and-trader we had leading our ticket).

The win in Arizona is huge because Arizona rejected the marriage amendment in 2006. This year, Arizonans decided to
correct their mistake, bringing to 30 the number of states that have, in the words of that infamous fellow from
Springdale "protected marriage" in their state constitutions.

And also Arizona gave marriage a perfect 30 out of 30 record of victory at the ballot box.

Once again Arkansas has embarrassed me but since I was born here and most of my family is here, I'll stay.

Pretty damning image of Ark vote. Look at image 2:

Whatever. I'm too happy for this day to be spoiled. The state I and many others canvassed for--MO--went to McCain. My home state went McCain. Franken lost (something I figured would happen from the handful of Minnesotans I talked to, many left leaning types who didn't want a comedian as Senator.)

My school went 87%+ Obama. Our President-elect is President Obama. :-)

And if you check out pictures on the front of huffingtonpost.com, all hues of the world seem to be celebrating.

I hate to exaggerate, but Obama is a leader not only for America, but for the world. He reflects the increasingly interconnected world we live in: he's half black, half white. His dad was a Muslim and his middle name is Hussein. He's Christian. His half sister is half Asian, married to an Asian. He spent part of his childhood in Asia. He subscribes to Western ideals. He was born in the most powerful nation on earth, the most idealistic nation on earth, the nation that everyone WANTS to love for everything it has stood for. And now he will lead it, and in many ways lead the rest of the world.

He will, I believe, help reconcile all these disparate segments of the world just by the very fact of who he is. Like I've said, I'm not religious, but it was almost as if it was designed this way.

I'm proud to be an American today, but an Arkansan? Not so much.
What's behind these numbers? Is it our historical stubborn against-the-tide streak? Or have we really regressed?
And most importantly, whose fault is it? Walter Hussman's? Joining the SEC? Or is it because of all those pyramid schemes with in-house Starbucks (also known as a megachurches)?

Just to pick up on what Ernie said, I pick my political candidates like I pick my brain surgeons...based on intelligence and ability. Do you want a brain surgeon you'd enjoy a beer with cracking your head open or one that appears to know every nook and cranny or them brains? I know lots of people I do have beers with and I enjoy the hell out of them. But I don't want any of them operating on me or running our government neither!

I'm just glad Arkansas isn't as stupid as Oklahoma. Last I looked OK went for McCain by 66% of the vote...the highest percentage in the nation...higher than Utah! What dumbasses I can see from my upstairs windows.......fie on them! But maybe the best revenge is to keep Jim Inhofe around for another 6 years so we can torture him and give him lots of space to show off what a big Nazi fool he truly is.

Electing Obama hasn't cured all cancer, but maybe with him I'll be able to afford to see a doctor when that big tumor I've been expecting for years starts growing out the side of my jaw. But I digress.....electing Obama won't automatically cure everything, but it's a good start. We're still going to have pockets of bad dinosaurs like the Inhofe and we're going to have to throw up a fence around them and watch them like hawks until they become sane or go away. Obama can give away gold bricks and there will be some people who boo and hiss.....go figure.

I hate it every time our legislature is in session, so I voted for the act to call them people together every year instead of every other year because I can't believe a whole state can operate with such part time legislators. I hope my vote doesn't jump up and bite me in the ass by this time next year. I think it might be time again to work over our 1874 era paperwork and see if there is a way to bring Arkansas's government into at least the 20th century. I love old things....but I love this computer age stuff too. We may not want Arkansas Legislature Vista...but I know we need at least to be operating under Arkansas Legislature XP.

And a few lawsuits will fix the red wagon of that hateful Initiated Act 1. There are far too many brothers and sisters taking care of their brothers and sister's children for that act to last very long. When it goes into effect watch for rickety wagons to pass by your house with the driver screaming out Throw out yer kin....Throw out yer kin! All those orphans can't live at chasv's house.....if we're not careful kids will wind up at the Glue Factory!

We got lots of work to do. Let's do it!

It's scary that only Utah, Wyoming and Oklahoma gave McCain larger majorities. I wonder what put off more those Democrats who voted for Mc Cain, Obama's race or his manifest intelligence? I've been here long enough to remember how the latter got Bill Fulbright into trouble every six years.

It really shows what an inept campaign McCain ran, and what a stealth campaign Obama ran. Obama did a great job of hiding controversial details of his plans for America. He has made an art of hiding behind "present" votes and speaking in riddles. After a couple years of this second coming of Jimmy Carter, the country will look at Arkansas and wish they had voted with us. His supporters will soon learn that Obama has no intention of keeping any of the promises he made. He said whatever it would take to get elected, as well as using his black panther and nation of Islam friends to intimidate voters.

I am happy that wealthy individuals like Max Brantley will soon be paying much higher taxes. When our utility bills go through the roof with Obama's new energy taxes, I wonder how many Obama supporters will have buyer's regret. The unions will be able to pilfer and pillage the profits of American companies and terrorize employees who don't want to be represented. I do hope that the Arkansas Times is unionized.

For today, we can look beside Obama's many flaws and celebrate the momentous occasion of our first black president.

Hey Severus, if you wanna be tacky at least be funny.

Take for example my posting of the linked audio of Obama supporters.

Act 1 passing just tore me up.
I cried my tears, I can't wait to get my degree and just go elsewhere.
I don't even want kids but it's the principle of it all.

Severus: For months the omniscient doom-and-gloomers pronounced that Obama would never be elected, that we Democrats didn't know what we were talking about, and then gloated over our predicted demise--how terrible we'd be feeling today while you celebrated your victory.

Well, guess what, Severus: Y'all were wrong!

But instead of gracefully admitting it, and showing the same kind of class Senator McCain did last night in his gracious concession speech, here you come today pontificating about how disastrous things are going to be under President Obama's administration.

Why don't you quit trying to be omniscient and just wait to see how things ACTUALLY turn out instead of poisoning the wells with your smears and pronouncement of all kinds of dastardly results? You lost the election fair and square. Go peddle your Kool Aid somewhere else!!!

Before you pat the McCain Arkansans on the back too much, DBI, look at image 2 and 3 and read the captions.

>>Note with horror ground zero of this perverse trend.

Surely Ark is not "ground zero" but indeed all the slave states.

But if we must define ground zero that narrowly then it appears the

two bottom rung states share it...Ark and Mississippi.

.

Gee doc.....I was working on my friendly. I'm pretty rusty at it after the last 8 years and on the left side of the state we're always looking for new and improved ways to poke OK with a sharp stick.

America lies in ruins today, Sev. Obama's secret plans can only point us in the up direction. I'm glad we're not waiting until all of us are hot footing it on the steaming molten lava that once was the US before we decided to make a big change. Just take another dose of Geritol and give President Obama the chance to change your mind. I predict it's coming and in 2012 when you're wearing an Obama '12 button I'll try to have the good grace to not remind people of your past.

When I was a Republican back in 1976, laying at the front of 1st Baptist church rolling around and crying on the night Jimmy Carter beat Gerald Ford, I offered up a prayer that despite my current pain and disappointment, I hoped God would make Jimmy Carter our finest President. Well...that didn't work out so well, but by god...Jimmy Carter may very well be our finest ex-President!

So take a tablet and wait and see what we will see. One thing about it......Barack Obama will be a much much better President than President Cheney has been. We gots no place to go but up!

Looks like Van Buren and Logan counties are going to have start a new streak.

MAX,

Exciting day for all of us, well mostly all. Homos have not received their Emancipation Proclamation yet.

But anyway the CNN link above goes to NormaBates.

.

I know one thing, if I were Obama it would be a cold day in hell before Arkansas got free money from the Feds.
I am very disappointed in my neighbors, but more so with the Democratic Party in Arkansas, including the Governor, the Pryors, our Congress members, and our local leaders. They didn't do a thing to support Obama.
