Good news on crime front

City officials yesterday told members of the Downtown Neighborhood Association that copper thefts are down. They credit a new city ordinance that requires a thumbprint of anyone selling scrap to city dealers. It is good news, the DNA was told, that only 17 thefts were reported in the last month. (Not so good if you were one of 17 victims.)

I was thinking about copper thefts yesterday. I was complimenting Library Director Bobby Roberts on the copper sheathing, shown above, installed on the facade of the library's new Arkansas studies center nearing completion on Clinton Avenue. (That's next door to a River Market parking lot that could be a shiny new $20 million Aloft Hotel if only Roberts and the anti-competitive Stephens family would allow it.) Roberts said the copper was firmly attached. He better hope for industrial grade epoxy. Those copper thieves are wily.

Comments

Could it be copper thefts are down, not because of the thumb prints, but because the price of copper has fallen from roughly $4/lbs to 1/lbs?

Ah thanks BB. A Free (falling) Markets sinks all boats.

.

Just how in holy hell does that facade on Bobby Roberts' Arkansas Studies fit in with the other more rustic RiverMarket buildings?

This would look great somewhere else but does it really fit with the existing RiverMarket look?

Surely this violates a RiverMarket overlay plan or whatever the thing is he trotted out to stop the Aloft.

Is it going to turn green? That will be attractive.

Arky

I am not defending Bobby "I'm In Stephens, Inc.'s Backpocket" Roberts, but the copper facade and modern architecture does fit in with the Moses-Tucker condos in the RiverMarket. Ironic that is the a Moses-Tucker backed project that Bobby is attempting to block (publicly) based on design.

That is a rather attractive building. I am surprised, though, that a building dedicated to Arkansas studies wouldn't have a more Arkansas-like exterior -- ie, aluminum from Alcoa at Bauxite or brick from Malvern.

Ooh wee! Our new Institution, er ... I mean, Institute shore don't match the rest of the RMD area. 'Lessen you count that trailer sittin' at the end of Prezzy Clinton Avenue.
