Sex in the red states
Great article in the latest New Yorker on sex in red states and blue states. (Arkansas is a red state in this analysis, based on the last presidential vote.)
The article takes off on the higher rate of unwed pregnancy among evangelical teens. In short, religion is a good indicator of attitudes toward sex, but not sexual practices.
The vast majority of white evangelical adolescents—seventy-four per cent—say that they believe in abstaining from sex before marriage. (Only half of mainline Protestants, and a quarter of Jews, say that they believe in abstinence.) Moreover, among the major religious groups, evangelical virgins are the least likely to anticipate that sex will be pleasurable, and the most likely to believe that having sex will cause their partners to lose respect for them. (Jews most often cite pleasure as a reason to have sex, and say that an unplanned pregnancy would be an embarrassment.) But, according to Add Health data, evangelical teen-agers are more sexually active than Mormons, mainline Protestants, and Jews. On average, white evangelical Protestants make their “sexual début”—to use the festive term of social-science researchers—shortly after turning sixteen. Among major religious groups, only black Protestants begin having sex earlier.
You've seen much of this before. Red state people tend to marry younger, divorce more often, have the highest teen pregnancy rates, are more reluctant to use contraception and are more susceptible to sexually transmitted disease. Abstinence-only sex education doesn't work so hot.

Speaking of sex in red states, has Palin's pregnant daughter married her boy friend yet?

I could see getting married earlier if that was the only way to get sex.
I also see getting divorced more often if a group were to marry earlier.
I could see an earlier (possibly in the teens) marriage age would add to increased teen pregnancy.
The more accurate count would be unmarried teen pregnancies.
I would like to see the numbers as a way to see how if at all the results are "interpreted".

"There hasn't been one evangelical family that hasn't gone through some sort of situation."
See, our surprise at evangelical Christian unwed pregnancies is proof indeed we have become too secular. These girls only prove that god indeed does work in mysterious ways.

C. Home,
Click on the name to see the synopsis of the December 2007 CDC report that answers your question. Married or unmarried is a bogus side-issue; think of "shotgun marriages" and wink-wink-nudge "premature" babies arriving less than nine months after a marriage. More important are the health aspects - infant mortality, health consequences of real pre-term birth, and the health of mothers whose bodies are not ready for childbirth. Abstinence education is a faith-based lie. Abstinence-only is a dangerous scam that has diverted money and resources away from services that really work.

Last thing I read, Durango, was an interview with Levi, the "redneck" boyfriend. He said the wedding was being planned for next summer. July or August, I think. (?????????) Now, I'm old fashioned, but I think that baby is gonna get here long before then. (If you're gonna get married, why not do it before baby makes three? If you're not, then shut up about it.) He also said the page that described him as a redneck who didn't want children was a joke made up by school chums.
Oh, and he has quit school in favor of working in the oil fields. Now anyone know if little mama-to-be quit school? Seems like something I read when this was first hitting the fan, that was the case. (That's where I'm really old-fashioned. As in: YOU. WILL. NOT.)

As I wait with baited breath for the election results to start coming in, I'm all over this red state sex thing. It has far reaching ramifications...I woke up this morning dreaming of using the word ramifications in a blog posting today and here I am!
I was born a small Baptist boy and while I didn't think I was paying a damn bit of attention to the preacher as I was growing up, my teenage years prove the opposite. When I started dating Baber's cousin in the 11th grade, neither of us knew a damn thing about sex. We knew there was something good below our belts, but that's about it. It took me months to get boob. And the first time I touched her bad thing I threw up all over her. A little known Arkansas rule is that you have to marry a woman if you throw up on her....so I did.
It was a long courtship and engagement period and our Friday and Saturday night fumblings grew more serious. But even my teenage erections couldn't get that damn preacher's words out of my brain. We danced up to the line of sex so many times I started walking funny. You try going thru the mall humping the air.......people stare and make rude comments. I'll never forget it! I know the meaning of the word shame.
And so we got married and drove thru the worst thunderstorm in Arkansas weather history and spent 3 days in the Crescent Hotel trying to figure out how to have sexual intercourse. And finally on August 30th, 1976 we quit being virgins in a ceremony that took all of a minute and a half. Bless be!
No human should be that ignorant about sex. It causes bad things to happen later in life. For me....waiting till I was 21 years and 15 days old to have sex elevated the sex act to heights unattainable by mere humans. On bad days, even in my old age, I can sorta feel a-stirrin when I see a picture of Janet Huckabee....yes.....you heard me.....And that ain't right. On badder days I catch myself dreaming of my current wife......in a long long vegetative coma, being cared for at home.....by me, all alone. Coma girls cain't say NO. I feel shame...the bitter taste rises in my mouth. Of course because of my dark desires my wife has super-human excellent health and sleeps as deeply as a downed airman in a sea of sharks......damn her!
Let us look at what our red state sex has done for former President Clinton. Only a former little Baptist boy like myself knows Bill was speaking the truth when he said "I didn't have sex with that woman, Miss Lewinsky!" Bill is telling the truth since to a Baptist a blowjob ain't sex! It's something....it might not be good manners....but it's not sex. You have ta stick it in her woo woo for it to be sex! Bill did not have sex with that woman, Miss Lewinsky and therefore did not lie under oath. I didn't have sex with Baber's cousin until the evening of August 30th, 1976 and I can pass a lie detector test with flying colors!
Then....take my wife's aunts. One a good Arkansas Methodist, the other a good Arkansas Episcopalian. The Methodist married 3 men in order to have legal sanctioned sex with them, the Whiskeypalian felt the need to marry 6 men in order to have God sanctioned sex. And in their old age they're both shaking their heads at their stupidity. All that pain.....all that dividing of marital assets, all those years wasted on asshole men, all those lawyer fees....could have been avoided if they'd just popped a pill....jumped in the sack and learned real early that their prince charming was a dog who couldn't find their bird in a bush with both hands.....like their men ever worried about their good time anyway.
I think it's a good thing to put off death for as long as you can. I think being ignorant of death is smart. I think knowing nothing about death except how to avoid it leads to a happier life. I think fooling yourself with a bunch of myths about death and the afterlife is harmless. But ignorance about human sexuality is dumb and dangerous and often lets the bad guys win. Recreating the Sarah Palin family in your house is stupid. God chooses not to protect your child from the pain of unwanted pregnancies.
Put your trust in giving your kids lots and lots of sex information as they grow up and put your trust in Bristol-Myers Squibb and if you're lucky, everything will turn out OK in the end. Ignorance in defense of virginity ID a vice.......be smarter!

Jim
Thanks for the link.
My intent was not to introduce a "side issue" but to decry an article that had only conclusions instead of data.
The current campaign has me requesting all backup documentation instead of the "conclusions" these politicians keep spouting.
ie, executive experience is governor of the "largest" state in the union. Alaska is indeed the largest but has only a third the number of inhabitants of Arkansas.

I found this to be the most amazing thing:
"Moreover, among the major religious groups, evangelical virgins are the least likely to anticipate that sex will be pleasurable"
Why on earth do they think people are so driven to have sex? What reason would lead to that intense drive EXCEPT for pleasure?
Amazing.

Citizen, evangelica thinking goes back to Calvinist theology of teh 15th and 16th centuries. In that viewpoint, Man was a cursed creature, who was wretched and could produce no good of himself. Only through the grace of God, would Man find salvation.
As a result, Man should avoid the "pleasures of the flesh" (BTW this inludes food and other forms of worldly pleasure, not just sex) and pray for humility. This was twisted into avoiding anything that "felt good". Sex was purely for procreation, not recreation.
From my perspective I find this thread entertaining. As a practicing Catholic, I understand my church's opposition to the birth control pill. I was raised in a strict house, and pre-marital sex was certainly discouraged. But even with the Church's strict rules against pre-marital sex, my experience was...
1) Born to my mother when she was 16 and unmarried.
2) Knocked up my girlfriend in college and quickly got married.
3) My half-brother knocked up HIS girlfriend his senior year in high school and got married.
4) My half-brother's daughter got knocked up HER senior year in high school.
My kids call this the "Stuart Curse." I call it plain stupidity... but to be honest, in the rush of teenage hormones, common sense goes out the window. And maybe we're hornier than most (sigh).
I love my church, but I disagree with its stand on sex ed. Girls need to be taught how not to get pregnant.

"Citizen1," are you "Citizen home?"
I, too, like to prevent those Emily Latilla moments where reaction is based on misinformation. I look for sources infinitely more reliable than Faux News. Remember, politicians are only experts in getting re-elected, not any area of practical knowledge.
The abstinence scam artists fly in their own "scientific researchers" to legislative hearings to speak in favor of their bogus programs. They do the same when they try to get legislation passed to indoctrinate people into believing that the earth is only 4000 years old and that the "Flintstones" cartoon is an historical documentary. They rely on the politicians' ignorance of actual scientific study and the politicians' fear of religious backlash in order to suck public funds to promote their ideology.
They don't care what harm they do. As long as they promote their delusion, they believe they will get their reward.
On another tack, as much as I enjoy your postings, dbi, maybe I'm the only one who thinks you can make a fortune selling your palm hair to make toupees for aging politicians. We need to get you laid.

WE HAVE A CULPRIT! maybe Evangelical children watch too much TV, like their parents, behold the Great Satan:
"Sexual content on TV is linked to teen pregnancy"
8:00 AM, November 3, 2008
Teenagers who watch a lot of television programs that contain sexual content are more than twice as likely to be involved in a pregnancy, according to a study published today in the journal Pediatrics.
Researchers from RAND Corporation surveyed about 2,000 adolescents, ages 12 to 17, nationwide in 2001 about their television habits and sexual behavior. Researchers focused on 23 programs popular among teenagers that were widely available on broadcast and cable TV. The shows included dramas, comedies, reality programs and animated shows. Sexual content was defined as depictions of sex as well as dialogue or discussion about sex. The participants were surveyed again three years later. About 700 said they had engaged in sexual intercourse by the third survey.
It's on clicky blue name.

Ark Travel-
I tend to suspect that RAND Corporation leans right, like Far-Right so no wonder they sought
the path of least resistance and blamed TV watching.
However, least we think video doesn't influence mass behavior the Journal of Pediatrics also
offered this:
"RESULTS. Habitual violent video game play early in the school year predicted later aggression, even after controlling for gender and previous aggressiveness in each sample. Those who played a lot of violent video games became relatively more physically aggressive. Multisample structure equation modeling revealed that this longitudinal effect was of a similar magnitude in the United States and Japan for similar-aged youth and was smaller (but still significant) in the sample that included older youth."

Yes we are one. Citizen Home and Citizen 1.
When Ark Blog went to that verifying service I registered at home (Citizen Home) but was unable to sign on from the office and was forced to become AKA Citizen1.
If I were inclined to screw with it I could probably correct it but I don't have the time.

Reflections on abstinence-only sex education.
1. Abstinence is the only 100%-proven safe and sure pregnancy-prevention and STD-prevention method known to man (and woman), with the single known execption of a little Jewish girl named Mary.
2. The major weakness of abstinence in preventing unwanted pregnancy: The same as for condoms and birth-control pills: You have to use it for it to work.
3. The major weakness of abstinence-only sex education: Applying it is not the same as knowing how to apply it. Knowing how to handle a firearm doesn't do any good if you don't apply it when you need it.
4. Word to the wise unmarried teens (and any others listening) who don't want to become parents: The same as to any gardener: If you don't want to run the risk of growing a plant, don't let any seeds get into the ground.
5. Abstinence-only sex education has the same probability of preventing unwanted pregnancy as "Just Say No" has of preventing alcoholism and drug addiction. It is 100% successful in the cases where the teaching is applied. In theory it is 100% perfect. It is also 100% perfect in practice. But if it is not practiced, it has no possibility of success.
So let's hear it from all the "motivators" out there: "We've got to motivate our students."
Rotsa ruck!

What fond memories this thread brings back!
I have always been "self-employed," as it were. And, obviously, incredibly smart.
I'll never forget when I turned 18 in a smallish town. My girlfriends were considering, oh, cosmetology school or a career as an Avon or Mary Kay associate.
Not for me, a lifetime of doing hair and giving makeover demos. Plus, I HATE pink.
I became a door-to-door condom salesgirl.
Not just ANY doors.
I worked office buildings and storefronts.
I was already savvy enough to realize my demographic niche, so to speak, was men . . . and that wives stayed home all day (in those days).
Truth be told, it really wasn't my small profit on the Trojans that put me through university and then the Sorbonne.
It was my immediately upselling the after-market, if you catch my drift, which led to my present position as the pinnacle of panache.

When you put a big taboo on something it just becomes more interesting and desirable to teens. The RR goes about sex-ed totally bassackwards. They don't want their kids to know anything about sex other than to just say "no", which they will never do. It's not surprising at all that there are more teen pregnancies and more divorces in the bible belt. The religious crowd, with few exceptions are wrong on almost all issues of morality and values, yet they think it is their personal domain.

After thinking about this, it is looking like the plan is to produce more evangelicals by preaching abstinence, which they KNOW won't work, thereby making sure their daughters are pregnant very early in life. That tends to cut off their education, only allowing them the option of being mothers and wives so they and their children can survive, producing more children to be indoctrinated into the evangelical faith.
So, it's all part of a plan. They REALLY don't BELIEVE in the abstinence only bit. They just want the girls to believe it so they feel so guilty about it that they will "do the right thing" by marrying early and going on the mommy track instead of the career track.
