Twittering the news

I'm reminded by a column-in-progress by a fellow journalism dinosaur that I'm Twittering now. My messages on these short-text Twitter alerts -- deliverable by email or phone -- are almost exclusively about items of interest on the Arkansas Blog, not what I had for lunch, etc.

But if you're interested, the Twitter name for signup is twitter.com/arkansasblog Feedback, news tips, etc. are welcome. Also: Lindsey Millar's doing similar Twittering in his part of the world, twitter.com/rockcandies

I have enjoyed the Twitter updates so far; the tinyurl links are especially useful.

Twitter twitter little star, how I wonder what you are...

High above the world so high....

Like a damn diamond @#$%^%$#@ mystery in the cyber sky.

I first discovered twitter after Ashley "ZOMG a big black dyslexic politically active mugger attacked me!!" Todd was busted partly because of her twittering. I didn't really get it then, and haven't bothered to figure it out. New technology makes me ascared!

Sorry to be so dim. Could someone tell me again why I'd want Twitter?

I don't know much about it either DBI, but her is a pretty good summation from NPR "All Tech Considered" this afternoon.

". . . Twitter is a service where you can tell people what you're doing using very short messages, under 140 characters. It's like a very tiny blog that you can update as often as you want. People can post messages to Twitter on the Web by sending a text message or even with an instant message. The site has grown quite a bit in the past two years, and businesses like Dell, Comcast and Whole Foods are using it to help customers. Some people think Twitter is trivial, but you'd be surprised how much information people can pack into such short messages. . . ."

DBI, I'd say if you can't think of a good reason to use Twitter, then you probably don't need it. I have tried to draw several of my friends, both tech-savvy and not-so, to Twitter but have failed in many cases. So it's just not for everyone, I suppose.

I personally find it interesting to follow all of the local media outlets who use Twitter, as well as the reporters and writers. It's sort of like seeing a little inside the process, with the bonus of getting pushed news updates throughout the day.

Other uses for Twitter:

Home Depot has a Twitter account that you can ask questions of and get answers (I assume product-related questions; I've not used it personally)

Starbucks uses Twitter and occasionally solicits customer comments and feedback.

A lot of software developers use Twitter to give updates on new releases and request feedback, as well as solicit potential new features

And, though it may sound a little silly, being confined to 140 characters challenges you to say what needs to be said without just blathering on and on (such as I have done here).

But I am confused at the amount of seemingly anti-Twitter sentiment on the AT Blog.... after all, Twitter is just right around the corner from blogging. It's not a great leap from one to the other.

Anyway, my Twitter page on my handle - clicky.

Sorry, try this:

I know the kids (including my sis) at UCA used twitter to get info during the shooting a few weeks ago. No doubt it's useful, IMO, but I'm still trying to figure out all the features on facebook. By the time I "get" twitter, there will be another new fangled tech thing that I won't get, lol.

I'm not anti-twitter.....just poking fun at myself..............

just learned the URL clicky thing few months ago and took me 3 years to learn the

copy and paste .........

Old dogs can learn new tricks, just takes some of us longer.....:>)

Thanks for the information. Here's my problem. I'm old. There's not much going on in my life. My updates would be about a cat limping or running out of Half & Half. I doubt the rest of the world would be very interested in that.

But I was young once and I well remember having to hunt down a payphone to call a friend with big news of a great new 8 track purchase or ticket info for a "pillow concert" coming up at the Municipal Auditorium. And then there was that day that Linda Sangster gave me my ring back just before lunch in front of the main study hall.

So I remember when things were popping in my life and I wouldn't make fun of Twitter or texting or any other modren technology in use by people actually experiencing an exciting life. I got a daughter that can text on her phone faster than I can type on my keyboard.....good on her.

For the record I am planning on buying a new filter for the furnace tomorrow. Hopefully the little bitty woman with the big miniature boobies will be working the cash register. It WILL be the highlight of my day. Twitter on!

PS after 2 long weeks....please Allah make TypeKey burp and reset so I won't have to sign in every time I post.

DBI,

Don't forget to check the "Remember personal info?" box periodically. It helps to keep the TypeKey monkey off your back.

Doc...I've checked that sucker 28 dozen times in the last 2 weeks. It's apparent to me that something at TypeKey corrupts and after x amount of time someone wakes up and hits the Restore button and everything is OK again. I can live with it, but for years I was one of the lucky ones who never got signed out. Hard to bitch about free....ya know.
