UCA trustee draws support

Interesting. The UCA faculty and staff have called for Gov. Beebe to reappoint Michael Stanton to the UCA Board. They laud Stanton for releasing to media the smoking gun memo that President Lu Hardin wrote over names of others to justify a big bonus.

Some thoughts on that:

1) Hardin's tenure had already begun unraveling by the time the memo was released on account of clandestine and extraordinary bonusing approved by Stanton and other board members, though there's no doubt the memo hastened the affair.

2) Stanton used public equipment from UCA at his home for a political fund-raiser for Republican Sen. Gilbert Baker.

3) Stanton took and enjoyed special treatment for his children on UCA housing and a wedding reception (comped bill) at the UCA student center.

4) UCA needs an entire roster of fresh leadership.

5) Beebe has worked hard for Joe White for state Senate, not Gilbert Baker.

6) Dream on, faculty.

Comments

UCA faculty seem to be solidly behind Joe White, if for no reason other than they despise Gilbert Baker. A lot of faculty don't agree with the faculty senate's affirmation of Mike Stanton, so many will be happy to see Beebe appoint a new person. Yes, UCA needs a house cleaning! Tom seems to be working on it.

Cynic that I am, quid pro quo I say. The profs see a chance to boost a board member, he shows his appreciation by supporting their little pet projects, er or something along those lines.

Although I generally agree with much of what Max says, he paints with too broad of a brush and is substantively wrong on a fact or two.
1. Hard'in's tenure was not unraveling in July and he still had the majority of the board's support on the day he resigned, that is why he successfully negotiated a full buyout of his contract.
2. Dr. Stanton voted against the $300k bonus.
3. While it is easy to say that UCA needs an "entire roster" of new leadership that is not realistically going to happen.
4. The faculty senate is not dreaming. They are making an argument to the Governor just like many individuals who have far less at stake than UCA's employees.

ARK. BLOG:1) He had majority board support, but the press was on his case and the tips were pouring in. His trouble had begun. 2) Stanton voted FOR the earlier $100,000 paid illegally. 3) You can get a new roster of board leadership by, first, not reappointing those who oversaw questionable decisions. 4) they are dreaming if they think Beebe will follow their request.

I'm not sure why you think that UCA faculty are "solidly behind Joe White." Many remember White to be a do-nothing trustee in the face of the Thompson reign of terror. There are as many perpectives on the UCA faculty as there are people.

The guv is a skilled politician who deals in the perceptions of the people . He does not dream
either. He does not need such a legacy on his record.

Donkeyjote,

You are right, there are many perspectives at UCA, including those who still believe that Lu was a gift from heaven (not so many any more). I should have said the faculty members I know support Joe because they despise Gilbert. I'm not saying Joe is the perfect answer, just that he isn't Baker.
