What's with Alaska?
You knew U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens was corrupt. You knew U.S. Rep. Don Young (pal of Huck and Dickey) was corrupt. Gov. Sarah Palin, between suspiciously fine house and her clothing haul, looks corrupt, too. Now comes this from fivethirtyeight.com on the election that everyone has been saying Stevens won:
Although Ted Stevens holds a small lead in Alaska and is the favorite to retain his seat, the outcome is not as inevitable as it might appear to be. Stevens currently holds a lead of 3,353 votes, or about 1.5 percent of the votes tallied so far. But, there are quite a large number of ballots yet to count. According to Roll Call, these include "at least 40,000 absentee ballot, 9,000 early voting ballots, and an undetermined number of questionable ballots".
Indeed, it seems possible that the number of "questionable" ballots could be quite high. So far, about 220 thousand votes have been processed in Alaska. This compares with 313 thousand votes cast in 2004. After adding back in the roughly 50,000 absentee and early ballots that Roll Call accounts for, that would get us to 270 thousand ballots, or about a 14 percent drop from 2004. It seems unlikely that turnout would drop by 14 percent in Alaska given the presence of both a high-profile senate race and Sarah Palin at the top of the ticket.
What the hell is wrong with Alaska (besides that it's a welfare state full of kooks)?

They knew Stevens, they knew Young, and they knew Palin. They knew McCain selected Palin, thus knowing his judgement. They weren't going to come out for Barack because 1) he is mulatto and 2) they want ANWAR open to drilling to increase the state's universal dole from oil revenues.
So a large number stayed home.

If we were smart we'd sell Alaska back to the Russians and be done with it. They're up there all alone with no one watching them....no telling what kind of bizarre stuff goes on up there. And try as I might, I can't think of any reason Alaska would have less people turning out to vote this time around. Someone might ought to poke around in the frozen tundra and see if there's not a few hundred thousand ballots buried in a shallow grave.
What can we do if we find out the whole state is corrupt? I'm trying to resist the urge to saw off Texas, Florida, and Alaska and let them float out to sea to bother someone else for a while.

Usually a voice the Ignorance Choir draws no attention from me other than to poke fun.
However this one is beneath Ignorance, it's beneath contempt:
>>GROW UP KINKO'S. ALASKA IS NOT A WELFARE STATE.<<
In fact Alaska is a leading welfare state.
"Here are the Top Ten Welfare States (note: just about 100% Red States)
1. New Mexico- $2.03
2. Mississippi- $2.02
3. Alaska- $1.84
4. Louisiana- $1.78
5. West Virginia- $1.76
6. North Dakota- $1.68
7. Alabama- $1.66
8. South Dakota- $1.53
9. Kentucky- $1.51
9. Virginia- $1.51
10. Montana- $1.47
My Friends, that is the Redistribution of Wealth Top Ten.
That's right.
For each dollar those states pay to the Feds, that's what they Get Back.
Talk about "Welfare."
Confused? Seriously?
Okay.
For every $1.00 Mississippi pays in Federal Taxes, they Receive $2.02 in Return (That's Chimpy Math).
Get it Now?"
Arkansas? No. 14, right in there with other welfare states...
Got that Gomer? Not that facts ever bothered your ignorant Fat Ass.
Do the clicky for the entire list.

Ah, eLwood. You never fail to remind me that Arkansas ranks near the bottom in education. Bless your heart, I know you can't help it.
The list you provide relates to Federal Spending in general, not just welfare. If you want to classify ALL federal spending as welfare, then you should switch parties.
If you want to find out more about the distribution of welfare itself, here's a link:
http://www.statemaster.com/graph/eco_wel_cas_tot_rec_percap-caseloads-total-recipients-per-capita
As you can see, Alaska does indeed have a fairly high "per capita" ranking, but still falls below states such as Rhode Island, California and Maine.
Poor eLwood. Someone help him.

Welfare state: Let's see.
Alaska is the only state that sends each citizen an annual check in excess of $2,000.
Alaska is the only state that raised taxes on oil companies and sent each citizen an additional check in excess of $1,000.
Does that make Alaska a welfare state, or just socialist?

Large, you're right. Our good neighbors of the far north earn every cent they spend:
"On top of the $150,000 first outlined in Federal Election Commission filings, Palin spent 'tens of thousands of dollars' on additional clothing, makeup and jewelry for herself and her family, including $40,000 in luxury goods for her husband, Todd, our colleague Michael Shear reports. The campaign was charged for silk boxer shorts, spray tanners and 13 suitcases to carry all the designer clothes, according to two GOP insiders."
Nosireebob, no welfare there, not for the First Dude. He earns his silk boxers fair and square, just like Joe Six Pack.

Click on blue name for a lengthy and detailed analysis of native Eskimos, federal welfare, Ted Stevens, enormous corporate loopholes, and the details of the federal involvement with Alaska's economy. It will give you an idea of how crooked Stevens was and why his pork projects earned him so many votes despite his illegal actions.
