Pressly case: A single suspect

Little Rock Police Chief Stuart Thomas has issued a carefully worded statement this afternoon emphasizing that there is one -- and only one -- suspect in the slaying of KATV anchor Anne Pressly. That's Curtis Vance, held since last Wednesday on a capital murder charge.

The statement is a response to a forest fire of unfounded rumor implicating some well-known local people in the case. Who knows how or why the rumors got started. But they took off in earnest last week and  reportedly have been aired on a Little Rock radio station, a Dallas TV station, a sports website and the comment strings of numerous blogs, including this one. We have addressed them previously.

A lawsuit may yet respond to some of the remarks. For now, I'll just leave you with a link to the chief's statement. He said the police anticipate no further arrests, though Vance might face additional charges as the investigation progresses. He said the department would not respond to the rumors nor comment on the case against Vance as it moves to trial. Prosecutor Larry Jegley joined Stuart in the statement.

It is safe to predict, I'm sorry to say, that the conspiracy theorists will find some perverse "proof" in this categorical denial. ("Why would they say anything if there wasn't something to it?," they'll say.) It is always thus. But an aggrieved family hopes this official word will dampen talk that has even reached ears of children. We shall see.

This type of cheap gossip, innuendo has been going on in Ark for far too long. I experienced it directly in 1958 at the Hot Spring County Courthouse in Malvern. It was insidious then long before the internetz, and few had tvs in Ark, yet there are slimy persons who have no other motive than
despicable rants to help them feel significant. It was during the course of a murder trial. The accused had shot and killed my father. It was during recess and I was thirteen. My cousin and I ventured to the cola machine then out to the rear steps of the court house and listened to a town drunk, wanna-be, has-been run down my father in ways which then were unimaginable. They were poorly dressed men, they had the attention of a small group. I was only 12 but started to lunge at the gossip monger with an empty cola bottle in my hand. My cousin, a few years older, stopped me. The man who was doing the sliming never knew my father, never heard of him until the trial started. Perhaps he thought he was influencing potential jurors. But the jury had already been selected.

Blaming victims is old hat in Ark circles. It stinks and now the media that carries it stinks too.
Too bad some folks are so goddamn small they find significance in gossip mongering.

Meanwhile don't miss the spectacular conjunction of Venus and Jupiter between 5:30-6:30 in the Western Sky. Last night the Moon joined in for a brilliant light show.

"Too bad some folks are so goddamn small they find significance in gossip mongering."

An understatement if ever there was one. Venus, Jupiter, and the moon are absolutely spectacular over LR right now. Many thanks for the reminder!

eL taught me a long time ago Durango not to be bothered by the trolls.

Enjoyed Venus and Jupiter and by the time I got to the second glass of wine decided to get the binoculars out. Spectacular!

The trouble is where I live, the houses are old and so are the trees, and hence, tall. So I had to walk a ways to find a good view of the southwestern sky.

Sorry I just calculated the geocentric longitude and sunset times without regard to the planets declination.
They were really tilted to the South this go around.

On bluename is a good photo of last night's triple conjunction over the Ark River at Ozark, AR.

.

eL and Goof are right. Don't feed the trolls.

eL, your blue name photo is exactly what we saw here tonight at a few minutes past six. My house is atop a ridge, and from the southwestern deck there's nothing to see but open sky, Pinnacle Mountain, and 20 miles past it into the Ouachita foothills. Thus, our view was totally unobstructed. What a show it was! The trolls? Seems to me they've largely disappeared. Maybe we've about starved 'em to death.

Hate to do this, yet the man-child in me must: "with all this sick gossip, it's no surprise that I feel tlike I'm looking at Uranus!"

Rumors suck. Luckily for those involved (or not as it turns out) in this case, the powers that be chose to set the record straight. Sadly, that is not the case for the other 99.9% of crime victims in Arkansas.

Contrary to what many here think, there is something to be said for being a part of the social "elite" here in Arkansas. It means that your reputation, and that of your loved ones, will be protected. I'm happy for those involved in this case, but sad that it isn't this way for all victims of this kind of gossip.

What kind of unsupported statement is that?

I'd certainly consider the Dillards part of the "social elite" and I repeated heard rumors about them being involved in the Glascow disappearance and feel pretty certain the Partee's would have preferred for there to have been no rumors floating around about their child's swimming adventure.

or Vince Foster

I'm just waiting for someone to start talking about the "grassy knoll" on Club Road.

I think these bizarre rumors are just part of any high-profile, high-publicity case. I guess it's just human nature, so to speak.

Well I, for one, am quite sure that placing a gag order on the case will go a long way toward convincing the public that the police have been forthright on this case.
