'Singlism' and the workplace

Have you read what Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell said about Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano's appointment to the Cabinet? She's perfect, Rendell said, because she has no family and thus "no life." She can devote 24 hours to the job.

Well.

Gail Collins of the NY Times presses Rendell on his stupid remark and he digs himself in further.

But the topic opens a whole box full of Pandoras about how we view the male and female roles in the family and, particularly, about something one writer has coined "singlism," an invidious form of discrimination against the unmarried, both men and women. It includes conferring higher virtue on the married and sticking the singles with tough duties (not to mention cost supplements on vacation deals.)

But it’s unmarried women at the top who often wind up portrayed as vestal virgins who live only to serve their chief executive. (Condoleezza Rice’s public image is so extreme that people must be wondering if she plans to immolate herself on the White House lawn during the inauguration.) Instead of being celebrated for their achievements, they wind up regarded as slightly fanatic.

And single women comprise between 43 percent and 51 percent of the adult women in the country, depending on how you count. They are universally regarded as folks with time on their hands, and thus the most likely recruits for taking care of aged parents, adjusting their schedules to accommodate their married friends and working overtime. “Employers ask you to cover for everyone else,” said DePaulo.

Which actually makes them sound busier than their married peers. So perhaps single Americans have too much life. It’s a wonder they have time for anything.

PS -- There are two very good reasons NOT to cheer Napolitano's appointment. 1) A Republican will become governor of Arizona. 2) Napolitano has been entirely too supportive of the human rights abuser Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

I received this treatment as a single, childless twentysomething working at a local, extremely successful hospital. I was asked to stay late or arrive early to help out whoever needed to drop off/pick up their kids from school. I was asked to bring more than my share of food to the potluck because I "didn't have other mouths to feed." When they needed more staff in the middle of the night, I was first on the list to call, and my coworker with two young children was last. My coworkers were understanding of my frustration, but my supervisors seemed to judge me as selfish because I spoke up about the inequality. Had they asked, they would have found out that I was also a student and had chosen not to have a family until I had finished graduate school. I was being punished for trying to be responsible.

Having a family is wonderful, but you sign up for extra stress and inconveniences when you choose to do so. I chose not to do that until I was ready, and I was not going to pay for that by ALWAYS being the one dragging my butt down to the hospital at 4 am, especially when I had class at 9am.

I read Collins all the time and I like her, but today I think she's making a hill out of a molehill or Mariah Carey or however that goes. First of all I hope President Obama shuts down Homeland Security.
As we've seen with our own dear Asa, at best it's an eHarmony.com for government insiders who wed defense contractors. FDR didn't need an extra sprawling war bureaucracy to win WWII. Truman didn't need it to lose the Korean War and Johnson-Nixon didn't need it to lose in Vietnam. Rhineland Security is just a giant boondoggle to suck up our tax money. Shut the mother down!

But back to singleness. My wife, who birthed us 2 fine children and continues to come home to the house most nights, has no life. She is a workaholic who is at work or home thinking about work 24-7. If you can stop her long enough, she'll admit to having no life. But she's made this giant hamster wheel and she can't stop running on it. I send her email saying Poor thing Poor thing, but that's all I can do and I'm just thankful that her snoring at night lets me know she's hasn't died in her sleep. Anyone want ta have an affair?

Also.....if this is the kind of mic leak we're going to get out of the Obama administration...WHOOPIE! If this has been a Bushie talking behind the mic, he would have said, FK that bitch, she's a lezzie skank, let's shoot her in the face! I hope Obama shuts down that Asa factory known as Homeland Security! And I look forward to Obama Nation!

What's not being said clearly here... is Nopolitano is probably Gay. Why does this type of attack always happen to the Reno's and Nopolitano's? Because someone wants to carry a threat over their heads. Janet should come out, imo.

Lumping her in with Sheriff Joe is about like Lumping Hillary in with Tommy Robinson.... Except in AZ Janet was the only Democrat around... virtually all others range from Sheriff Joe to John McCain. It's amazing she served in public office at all, much less did so very well.

I cannot imagine being a moderate competent Democrat in that kind of environment myself. But the sane folks in AZ I know can't say enough good things about Janet. She also was among the first ardent supporters of Obama out that way... It made a difference for him on many levels... So I am sure that played a role.

I know I am considered a radical lefty on a blog like this.. since I despise global torture and needless wars... as well as love our constitution... and these things are more important to me than money. But Janet was the best major nominee in the pack last week... Like DBI. I sincerely hope she and Obama dismantles DHS...
