Here we go again
Stephens Media has a variety of legislative advance stories today, including a roundup of the ever-popular social issues. Abortion is back, thanks to the U.S. Supreme Court (thank you Mark Pryor for your damaging work in this area.)
But I had to utter a mordant chuckle at this quote from Jerry Cox, of the adoption-limiting Act 1 lobby. Whodda thunk someone would think adoption is harder in Ark.? He'll be busy, too, protecting hate and holding down women.
Some Arkansans who wish to adopt find it easier to do so overseas than at home, Cox said.
“There must be something wrong with our system here if we’ve got willing parents and kids that need a home but somehow we can’t make it happen,” he said.
Cox said the Family Council likely will spend the majority of its time during the session on “the defensive side of things” — opposing any efforts to pass hate crime legislation, broadly structure a voter-approved state lottery, which the group opposed, or ratify the federal Equal Rights Amendment.

Jerry Cox uttered:
"There must be something wrong with our system here if we've got willing parents and kids that need a home but somehow we can't make it happen,"
The irony, the irony. He's making a spot on the 2009 s-t list already!
Now that Cox has pushed Arkansas further into his vision of fascism, his lust for power won't stop at forbidding gays from adopting. He'll go after women next and the freedoms we hold dear. Cox has already succeeded into turning the Arkansas Constitution into another "... piece of paper".
The problem is the Arkansas Ledge is a gathering of for the most part, ethicly challenged whores that will stoop to selling their birthright or ethics for a vote, especially if it means further marginaizing GLBT Arkansasans, women. and Arkansans in general. Where was the opposition of Act 1 from Ledge members?

Seriously Jerry?
I think the folks on Dickapedia really need to get to writing that entry for Cox.
What a dick....

In addition to the social travesty commonly known as Act 1, the continued opposition to ratify the federal Equal Rights Amendment is yet another shameful blight on our reputation as Arkansans.

Cox seems to have no sense of irony at all. I got a mordant chuckle from his comment, reported in the DoG, when ACLU filed suit to overturn Act 1. "I heard today a group of adults talking about adult rights and what adults get to do," he said. "We believe children have rights, too."

Only one word to describe Cox. Idiot. Sorry to be so harsh, but I am sick of these people.

Looks like Arkansas will be joining the year 2009 somewhere about 2050. Bright folks just won't run for office in Arkansas and when they do they get beat at the polls. Ms_Haley just about summed it up, I can't hardly add to that.
Except to talk about going out of the US to adopt a baby. I've had 2 friends go that route 3 different times. Both couples went to China and brought home a female Chinese baby. The other couple went twice and brought home 2 Chinese babies. 2 of the 3 times were a success. But couple 2 wound up with one infant that turned out to have all kinds of learning problems. She has been diagnosed as autistic. Actually the problem is that the baby was born, put in a crib and not touched for a year other than having her diaper changed and a bottle put in her mouth. There were too many infants in the Chinese orphanage she spent her 1st year in. No one had the time to pick her up and pat on her, sing to her, talk to her.
She's got the most loving parents in the world who are willing to work with her 24-7 and can afford the medical bills and the special schooling. Hopefully some day she'll be OK.
I don't type this to warn other people away from adopting any child from any point on the planet. Just to point out how vitally important it is to adopt and how many children there are in the world in need of adoption. On bad days I think of our friend's little girl laying in a crib untouched for a whole year, just maintained like a farm animal. What on earth could be worse than that? Cox should be ashamed. No wait....I'm ashamed of him enough for 2.

Ditto to everyone's comments...especially Ms_Haley. But I think your 2050 date is a little optimistic, dbi. I hope it's just me...but I'm surrounded by more right-wing nuts every year. Sure, there are a couple who're NOW saying wishy-washy crap like 'I never REALLY liked Bush.' But for the most part they're still buying/selling ANYTHING that starts with an 'It's the Godly thing to...' The change would be comedic if not for the destruction/carnage their ignorance has brought us.
Yes, when Jerry and his Inquisition Gang get down with gays, immigrants...they'll get back to putting uppity women in their proper second place...and worshiping the Michelle Duggars of the world.

Yes...Jerry getting 'down' with the gays would be funny...but 'done' with them was my intent. Lordy.
