Annals of gun nuttery

The gun crowd has gone berserk in Tennessee because The Commercial Appeal in Memphis has posted on-line the names of all holders of concealed weapon permits in the state. It's a public record. The list in Arkansas is public record, too. Care to see it?

It's a big ol' file, hard to manipulate, about 7 megs. Tens of thousands of names (and a huge surge of new apps in the pipeline, State Police say, whether because of the post-Obama gun-buying frenzy or the phases of the moon or just happenstance.) It's yours on demand from the State Police, available in a spreadhseet format by e-mail.

Have fun searching for your friends. But I've checked this much: The current governor and the current congressional delegation are not in possession of concealed carry permits. The Huckabees, Janet and Mike, are armed.

Comments

Please yes Max. Let's see who in my church is packing.

While you're at it can you post Commodore Hays' latest, and I say this with my tongue firmly in my cheek, ethics statements?

Let's see that list, but only if it pisses off the gun nuts.

Absolutely, yes please. Online and searchable if possible.

If you want to have some REAL fun, post the Texas list.

Max,

your update mentions tens of thousands of names. Is that the Arkansas list?

How many were on the Tennessee list? Does arkansas have more concealed carry permits issued or does the Arkansas list contain more detailed information?

I guess I need to finally go get me a concealed carry permit so that I am not the only one on my block not on the list.

That would be a bummer, get home invaded becasue I am not listed as packing. They will have to shoot my dog though to get in. That would give me the opportunity to duck out the back window.

>>That would be a bummer, get home invaded becasue I am not listed as packing.

First assumption is that your comment is a joke. However, anyone, save for felons,
may have guns at home. Mentally retarded? No problem. Psychologically unstable? No problem. Best defense is to surprise an invader with like a really
loud shot, .40, or .45, or shotgun. I've never fired my .45 inside. The noise it makes outside
is deafening enough.
I will not be on the conceal-carry list. Take your chances.

.

From the CA article:
"For example, Harry Raymond "Ray" Coleman, the Cordova man charged recently with shooting a man to death after an argument about whether the dead man's SUV was parked too close to Coleman's vehicle, will lose his permit to carry a concealed weapon. Isn't that the way it should be?"

Reason enough to not allow folks to carry weapons out in public with them.
Humans can change from nice normal folks into irrational idiots over silly, stupid things. Why would we want them also armed?
Want a gun in your home or to go hunting?
Fine, but please keep them at home when come in contact with me and mine....

EEEEE.KKK - one of them lib-ruls in the (Former) WHITE House:

Proves the limited intellect of our citizenry; wonder how many can name the 3 branches of government?

That's on the Concealed Carry Exam, right...???

Remind me not to diss Paul Greenberg, no matter how mean, petty or out of touch I find his editorials. Don't want to get capped over it.

ARK. BLOG: Li'l Danny is packing, too. And I believe that's another D-G editor on down the list.

Seriously, folks. These are not the people you gun-phobes need to be afraid of. Be afraid of the hidden guns on people who *aren't* on this list... the ones who are above (or below) the law... the ones who couldn't pass the background check... the ones who are more interesting in harming others than protecting themselves.

As for the list, I've got not problem with it being published. It is public record. Of course, I find it interesting that the Commercial Appeal edited out individual addresses of the Tennessee list and the Times printed the whole kit and caboodle for Arkansas.

Cosmosis, we're already afraid of nuts and criminals. No big secret. No big deal.

We do need to be afraid of the people on this list. They're the ones who can, at any time, go bat shit crazy and snap. The big guy wearing the hoody, hiding in the bushes, who looks like he's been smoking crack? I'm on it! The once-normal soccer mom who whips a piece out of her diaper bag because someone on the other sidelines started talking smack about her little angel? Never saw her comin'!

The people on this list are the ones who suddenly decide they're tired of their gd wife, or who swear the gun is locked up and unloaded right before their toddler finds it and shoots himself in the head, or who one day wake up and decide they need to take out a congregation or a Democratic party chairman. It's legal gun owners like those who scare me to death.

I urge you all to register and post on the Commercial Appeal's website. It's like freedom of the press has ceased to exist in TN.

Say your husband plead guilty to some felony charges and spent a year or so on home arrest...if you're his spouse can you still have guns in the house?

Since most of the trouble comes from criminals who don't bother to register their stolen weapon , that's what makes going through the proper channels to get a concealed permit so laughable. It's like that Indiana Jone's movie where Indy is confronted by the giant guy with waving a giant sword around and Indy just pulls his little gun and shoots him dead. Fini

I am for gun control. I am for curing cancer. I'm for a brand of sexual desire that lasts a woman's entire life. But like the War on Drugs......making it work is like lassoing the wind. Though I had one bad run in with a crazy guy with a gun in my life, I am going to be so very very surprised if I'm ever shot or killed by someone with or without a permit. If you all hear I was blown away, just imagine the super surprised look I had on my face when it happened, and how will the undertaker ever get that look off my face for a proper viewing?

I think publishing the names of permit holder might actually make the world safer. I don't know Paul Greenberg, but if I ever have a day I feel like robbing or raping someone....Mr. Greenberg is now safe because I know he's packing. The first lesson in Criminal 1.1 is make sure the person you're going to rob or rap doesn't have a concealed gun permit. Prey on the weak and unarmed. Now, there's words to pass on to your young'uns!

I have a loaded gun and I will kill you if you are in my house in the middle of the night and you scare me. I scare easily after dark. But if my life felt so dangerous that I had to get a permit to carry a gun......Greyhound has a bus leaving Fort Baptist every couple of hours and I'd pick one and go away away away away. Life is too damn short to live in danger. I can pump gas and blog in Eugene, Oregon just as easy as I can do it where I am right now.

Our lives will never be enjoyable. Too much silly, dangerous, racist, criminal, do-gooder, greedy, I'll-tell-you-one-damn-thing shit is hitting the fan. Those of us not scared to death are prepared to crush everyone else for fun and profit. Our 2 political parties have turned into a double-edge sword that's slicing everyone. The do-gooders are choking us to death. Religion is choking us to death. Our food is poison, our resources about gone.

Those with a concealed permit my outlive me by a dozen days or weeks. But I for one don't want to be a pallbearer for the planet. I want out in the first wave. And sweet dreams to all tonight!

MeanGirl-

You reference Timothy Dale Johnson in your post, which is a blatant attempt to paint concealed permit holders as crazed assassins. In fact, Johnson, who shot and killed Bill Gwatney, did NOT have a concealed handgun permit. He would NOT have been on this list for you and others to chastise and fear. Yet you conveniently try to paint the thousands of law-abiding citizens on this list with the same brush you would paint an insane murderer. That sounds like something the right-wingers would do.

Of course, that's just one of several falsehoods your post is littered with. You have no proof that concealed handgun permit holders are more likely to snap and murder a spouse although you claim as much in your post. Also, you can't prove that permit holders are more irresponsible about storing loaded weapons but that didn't stop you from making that suggestion, either. It's easy to suggest how crazy people are for wanting to carry a weapon, but it's a lot harder to provide supporting evidence -- something *NO ONE* in this thread has done so far.

I have never understood why anyone would want the law or the gov to be able to look up what or if I am carrying a concealed firearm. Though my bazooka is a bit much to hide under a raincoat I still would prefer to keep such things a mystery and better yet a surprise.

Scandal of the week:

A 'fraud' bigger than Madoff

In what could turn out to be the greatest fraud in US history, American authorities have started to investigate the alleged role of senior military officers in the misuse of $125bn (£88bn) in a US -directed effort to reconstruct Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein. The exact sum missing may never be clear, but a report by the US Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction (SIGIR) suggests it may exceed $50bn, making it an even bigger theft than Bernard Madoff's notorious Ponzi scheme.

"I believe the real looting of Iraq after the invasion was by US officials and contractors, and not by people from the slums of Baghdad," said one US businessman active in Iraq since 2003.

In one case, auditors working for SIGIR discovered that $57.8m was sent in "pallet upon pallet of hundred-dollar bills" to the US comptroller for south-central Iraq, Robert J Stein Jr, who had himself photographed standing with the mound of money. He is among the few US officials who were in Iraq to be convicted of fraud and money-laundering.

Despite the vast sums expended on rebuilding by the US since 2003, there have been no cranes visible on the Baghdad skyline except those at work building a new US embassy and others rusting beside a half-built giant mosque that Saddam was constructing when he was overthrown. ....

Iraqi leaders are convinced that the theft or waste of huge sums of US and Iraqi government money could have happened only if senior US officials were themselves involved in the corruption. In 2004-05, the entire Iraq military procurement budget of $1.3bn was siphoned off from the Iraqi Defence Ministry in return for 28-year-old Soviet helicopters too obsolete to fly and armoured cars easily penetrated by rifle bullets. Iraqi officials were blamed for the theft, but US military officials were largely in control of the Defence Ministry at the time and must have been either highly negligent or participants in the fraud.

American federal investigators are now starting an inquiry into the actions of senior US officers involved in the programme to rebuild Iraq, according to The New York Times, which cites interviews with senior government officials and court documents.

Seems that women that are being stalked would want to be on that list, as a "beware of woman" sign like a "beware of dog" sign. Hopefully it would scare the stalker away.

Oh, and it would be nice to know which neighbor had a gun if you needed help.

Well I am in the process of getting my CC permit and maybe if a criminal can read which is doubtful (liberal education system) maybe it might spare this poor misguided soul from getting a hole thru his head......and go to one of your liberals occupied homes and rape, murder or robe you and your love ones.....and while you are waiting on the Police to arrive to write the report and clean up the crime scene you might be thinking I wish I had a gun to protect myself.....

Remember the Police are not there to Protect, just to clean up after your dead or have been robbed, just ask them.....excellent report takers.....and to notify next of kin.

quarter, we all have guns. We're just not so terrified of our fellow citizens that we have to take our guns to Wal-Mart, church or Western Sizzlin. I'm sure your piece gives you a lot of confidence though. Sounds like you need all the aid you can get.

If you wanted to spare poor misguided souls from holes in their heads, you'd wear that pistol where they could see it.

Nope, the only reason for hiding it is because you WANT to put holes in their heads and if they see it you won't get the opportunity.

Either that, or you don't want law-abiding citizens like me to know you're sitting next to me with a gun in church or at the junior high football game.

But then, critical thinking and reality aren't part of a conservative education.

Looks like the Obama administration may actually show some level of respect to gun owners instead of the labeling and marginalizing that is rampant in this blog. Click the blue link. I know it's Fox News so take it with a grain of salt.

New Deal- I assure you that reality is not a virtue of a liberal education.

Interesting note. My address is on the list next to the names of the former owners. Are people required to update the information when they move?

I'm all for open carry laws. Lots of states have them. I'm glad that you agree that Arkansas should have them too.

I want to thank Max Brantley for publishing the database of CHCL holders. Our gun rights group will be able to use this list to our very good advantage.

Thanks again, Max, for your hard work! We will do our very best to fight enemies such as you.

Open Carry in Arkansas IS the way to go in this state, IronFortified. Legislation will be filed soon to allow Arkansas residents to carry in the open such as you say. Please contact your representative and let him know you support it!

At least the bad guys now know exactly where to go to get a gun. I sure hope none of these people get robbed or burglarized because you published this list. I agree with Steve Jones from www.ArkansasCarry.com in the post above. Max Brantley has just made 56,350 new enemies. TO ALL CONCEALED CARRY HOLDERS OUT THERE. MAX BRANTLEY IS YOUR ENEMY! I'll make it my job to make sure they all know it too!

Hey while we are at it lets post a list of all the people with drivers licenses and library cards up here too. I mean why not... they are public record... and it serves just about as much good. Probably more good.... I mean you can be a mental patient or a convict and have a drives license or a library card. Both of which are excluded from the ranks of CCW holders.

ARK. BLOG: Shazam. A gun nut can read!! And knows how to use a phone book! Boy's a genius. (Savvy web users could have found it through a search of past blog posts and even a print edition of the Times, which included a satellite photo of my home.) Unlke some of the gun nuts, I'm not a paranoid fearful of shadows. Unlike many of them, I also don't make anonymous phone calls.

Given the nature of some of the calls I've received today, I guess I should be scared of you guys. But you're always telling me that concealed carry types are law-abiding, right? Threatening phone calls being at least one exception to the rule.

Not only can I read max I have a degree! WOW! See we are mad because what you just did was provide a shopping list to criminals Max. Your irresponsible. And your a moron.

you need to wash your car max...nice home though...

Funny what Mr Brantley thinks the public needs to know, the records and addresses of law abiding ( they've all passed back ground checks by the State Police) citizens, but not the criminal records of public officials, he was against the law proposed to release those records because Max said that that bill "simply has an aura of meanness." Which release of records would be more informative for the public, names and addresses of lawful gun owners or criminal records of public officials ?

Or as State Representative Dan Greenberg notes, "Max's glee in communicating public information wasn't in evidence a week or two ago, when my bill to make the criminal records of public officials available to the public came before the House Judiciary Committee. At that point, Max said that that bill "simply has an aura of meanness." (Of course, he's hardly the only person who didn't like the idea; the bill got voted down by the House Friday.)What drives Max's shifting moods on the freedom of public information? Is it just a matter of what he had for breakfast that day?"

Plenty of people are afraid of guns until they need one.

When you're robbed at gunpoint in downtown Little Rock by a felon who cannot legally own a gun, and your wife is assaulted while you watch helplessly - it changes your mind. (Happened to a family member.)

When you sit in McDonald's and watch innocent people - including children - being shot by a man whose background prohibits him from legally owning a gun - you'll wish you had one. (True story.)

If a criminal sees my address on the list, and thinks he can "shop" here - I will not hesitate to shoot him. I value my family and my life too much to sit by, helplessly playing the victim.

And, if an open gun law is passed in Arkansas, I'll be proudly wearing a holster on my hip.

A fellow traveler of the road of liberty asked me to post this for him, not wanting to soil his email address with a registration here.

Printing the CHL info. has, I believe, done license holders a favor. If I were
a criminal I'd look up an address on the list before I burglarized it. Less
chance of being shot while trying to rob, murder, rape or otherwise ply my
trade.

The good guys, for now anyway, have a way to protect themselves and their loved
ones from vicious criminals and other idiots. Try hitting a rapist/murderer
with your lap-top. It just won't work as well as a well-placed shot with a
firearm.

Oh yes, I'm a fan of "disproportionate response" in some instances.

Note: "Laws that forbid the carrying of arms ... disarm only those who are
neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse
for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage
than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater
confidence than an armed man." ---Cesare Beccaria, On Crimes and Punishment,
quoted by Thomas Jefferson in Commonplace Book, 1774-1776

Here's another scenario for you to consider, now that you've done this. I'm a middle-aged professional male with a college degree who just had the misfortune of chosing poorly in picking my first wife. She ended up on meth and I ended up with a concealed carry permit because of the people she had started bringing around before I told her I'd had enough and we divorced. I've spent the last several years trying to make sure my new address hasn't been made public because I don't want her to know where I am because she is way too unstable and unpredictable because of the meth.

I always knew there was access to my information through my concealed carry permit, but that was a risk I had to take because I felt like I needed the protection, wanted it to be legal, and you had to go searching for it to find it that way. Then someone like you comes along and gives easy access to it. I just hope for everyone's sake involved that nobody she knows sees this and happens across my name, and drives her to do something stupid that would make me have to test the limits of my concealed carry permit.

Would that be something you could live with, because if it happens and I survive it, I'll make sure the whole country knows why it happened. I hope I never have to use my gun, any of them, for personal protection, but, when you've been faced down in your own house by someone on meth threatening to come back and kill you when they can find a gun, it will make your mind go places it never did before.

So all you've really done for the resourceful criminal is provide him/her with a tool to exclude potential targets! I'm sure my CCL equipped friends appreciate it.

In case anyone would like to contact Max about his publishing of what he proclaims to be public info here is his home address and home telephone number. I am sure he would love to hear from you.

What... you couldn't find his IRS tax records?

I think we need to start calling some of the more affluent business people on this list and let them know what Mr. Brantly has done. Do you think that, for instance, Mr. Allan M. who recently advertised his firm in the print version of Arkansas Times would be thrilled? How about the family who sells cars? What's their name? Flanders? I bet they'd love to talk to the advertising folks like Phyllis. Wouldn't they?

I couldnt find the link to the list...help please.

Here's the link to the Excel spreedsheet.

So much for URL's being displayed...

http://www.arktimes.com/assets/documents/gunpermitsark2.xls

Thanks but the link is broken....

Any other ideas?

Hmm, it looks as though Mr. Brantly has edited his original post and hasn't told anyone. I wonder why? Has he been informed of the potential harm he has caused? If you want to see what this blog looked like, just take a look at this:

http://www.arkansascca.org/blog/upload/Image/arkansas%20times%20outs%20gun%20owners.JPG

That was taken yesterday. There is a lively discussion there as well, at http://www.arkansascca.org/blog

I don't wish Mr. Brantly any harm, but if he causes others to be harmed I sure hope his stunt is remembered by the legal community.

Max F. Brantley of 3210 Edgerstoune Lane, Little Rock, AR 78205, who may have been born almost smack dab in the middle of the twentieth century, who may have a listed telephone number 501-663-6758 at that same address, which may be assessed at $395,364.00, may be our blogger; Max Brantley (who gleefully posts information about AR permit carriers but derides public information about public people when it has an aura of meanness).

He may be married to Ellen B., who may have almost been born on the anniversary of the worst terrorist attack on American soul, just some 53 years earlier.

Let's see how long this stays posted...

I can not believe you would print a list like this. I am cancelling my subscription to your paper and advising all advertisers of yours to do the same because I will not be a patron of their business if they continue to advertise with you.

Not only was this a dumb decison, it reminds me of your dumb editors and the columns they attempt to write. I thought you had to be a college graduate to earn a degree in journalism, but you find the editors from who knows where.

You're paper will not survive your outrageously arrogant and ignorant appearance on KARN this morning. You sounded so dumb, flippant and arrogant, I don't see how advertisers will be able to afford to advertise in your paper any more.

Happy hunting for another job..

Yes I am among what you call the "so-called law abiding conceal carry holders". I will not threaten you as I am law abiding - but your paper will be the target of our anger and it should be prepared to bear the consequences of your ignorance and hate.

Remember as this unfolds that it is you who initiated this course of events with the hateful motivation for publishing the information and it was you whose lips first dripped with disdain for people that you didn't even know.

We now know your heart and motivations and we don't much like what we see and hear.

And another thing.....

The main reason us conceal carry holders apply for licenses and pay money to actually apply our constitutional right to carry a weapon is so that criminals will know that they DON'T know who does and who does not have a weapon. Criminals are less likely to carry out acts of violence because they DO NOT know who carrys a weapon.

You keep saying, "I think the public has a right to know who is packing".... that's just the point of conceal carry - It's concealed for a reason - so that the public won't know - So that the criminals don't know who the easy marks are.

You've done criminals a favor.... so do you still think you're serving the public..... I'm sure the reason and logic won't find space in your small mindedness and liberal causes.

Remember, an armed society is a polite society.

I have a CCP and own firearms. I am a Marine veteran and honor the 2nd amendment. For those of you who do not wish to own a fire arm I have a suggestion. Place a large sign in your front yard reading "This is a Gun-Free Home!" This will let the world know just how anti-gun you really are. What? Can't do that? Then you are a craven coward and are afraid to declare your self defenseless. For me and my family we will just let all the bad guys guess whether or not we are armed for self defense.

Max,

Thanks. Thanks for letting the criminals and gang members know where they can find guns. What a wonderful public service you are doing. I'm not a gun nut, but you are definately an anti-gun nut. My wife just recently retired and doesn't like using guns, so when they come in while I'm at work to get them I guess I'll just have to accept the fact that when I come home and find her and my dogs dead that you are doing the right thing....

Wake up. When seconds count, the police are just minutes away, and the supreme court has ruled that they don't even have to respond. I have the right to defend myself and others. Over 2 million times a year guns STOP crime, but we don't see that blasted over the main stream media. No, we only hear about the bad rare events that give the impression that it is the norm rather than the exception. And the stats about children dying? They include gang members between the age of 14 to 22 shooting each other over drug and turf wars, not little six year old Susie finding daddy's gun.

No, instead we have an uninformed idiot (you) who has an view that guns are bad and people like me are bad too and have to be exposed.

At around Christmas time a few years back, a man lost his life (husband and father) who yelled at at a crim beating an elderly lady for her purse in a Wal-Mart parking lot and he shot him with the gun he was beating her with. If I had been there, he (husband and father) would still be alive as I would have shot him (the crim) without hesitation, but still within the legal parameters of my training.

My son is a sargeant for the Houston police. When I was waiting for my permit to arrive, I asked him what he thought of concealed carry. His reply was 'We can't be everywhere.' Check the facts, Max. Police all over the country, including Arkansas, like the idea of people like me carrying concealed. Did you know that if things were to get bad and the cops know I've got a permit I can assist them without legal consequences?

So go ahead and believe that guns are bad and since I'm on the list that I'm bad too. That doesn't make it so...

All you have done is provide the list from where crims can find guns. Nice job! What other public service projects do you have up your sleeve?

Perhaps next time you will think about the risks you just placed all of us law-abiding, trained, FBI checked, investigated and fingerprinted people.

Mr. Brantley,

I agree that death threats are criminal activities. As for harassing communication, what do you call what you did with your original blog. Don't be surprised when the legislature makes it CLEARER that the State Police list off CCW permit holders is intended to be used for law enforcement purposes, not public dissemination or harassment. If you care to research it, you will find similar legislation has come about in Oregon and soon Tennessee and other states because of activities like yours. In some states, Chiefs of Police ask permit holders whether or not they wish to remain anonymous to the public.

I'll just leave you with some constructive criticism, assuming you can handle some. Don't insinuate that those who lawfully obtain CCW permits are NUTS (nuttery) in print (newspaper or blog) and expect all hugs and kisses or that they won't bother to debate or criticize you. What the heck did you expect?!!!!!!!

You could use your bully pulpit in more constructive ways. Your topic on this occasion was not one that would well received in Arkansas or anywhere in the South where the majority subscribes to ALL of the Bill of Rights, not just some of them. The Second Amendment is just as important as the First Amendment...you surely cannot be ignorant of that fact. You have the right to espouse your opinions, but to do so in such an abrasive manner invites criticism, and honest debate (and even threatening response from a certain element). Please don't include law-abiding citizens who practice their Second Amendment rights in a lawful manner with the criminal element. To do so invites scorn and it is in no way fair.

I see from the discussion on the blog that someone has made public Mr. Brantley's address. All Mr. Brantley has accomplished is to put a big neon sign on his home that he is unarmed and any professional (or perhaps neophyte) burglar or home invader will be able to have their way with him and his without any worry whatsoever about being deterred by a potentially armed citizen. Of course, Mr. Brantley can call the police and they will be there long after anything can be done about the home invasion, burglary, and god forbid homicide perpetrated on Mr. Brantley and his family.

Why doesn't Mr. Brantley just mind his own business? Why the crusade against lawful gun owners? Whether he likes it or not, we licensed concealed carriers and others who keep firearms in our homes, serve as a deterrent to criminals who would otherwise prey on us or our neighbors who do not choose to be armed. In other words, Mr. Brantley is safer because of us, not less safe.

Mr. Brantley's making public the list of CCW holders in the state only serves our purposes better. The criminals will leave us alone and will rather prey upon those not on the list.

I LISTENED TO AN INTERVIEW OF MR. BRANTLEY ON KARN RADIO THIS MORNING. IT SEEMS OBVIOUS FROM HIS COMMENTS THAT HE FEELS THAT HE ALONE KNOWS BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE WHO NEEDS AND WHO DOES NOT NEED CONCEALED CARRY.

I AM JUST INCREDULOUS AT MR. BRANTLEY'S ARROGANT AND FLIPPANT ATTITUDE REGARDING THOSE WHO CARRY CONCEALED WEAPONS! HE GAVE NO CREDIBLE ARGUMENT AS TO WHY HE PUBLISHED THE LIST OF CCW PERMIT HOLDERS. FURTHERMORE, HE CONSIDERS ANYONE WITH A CCW TO BE A "GUN NUT", HENCE HIS BLOG TITLE "GUN NUTTERY". THE CALLERS GAVE VALID REASONS FOR CONCEALED CARRY AND HE JUST FLIPPANTLY DISMISSED THE ARGUMENTS REGARDLES OF THE CIRCUMSTANSES.

I FORGOT TO GIVE THE LINK TO THE PODCAST.

Max - was there really a need to post this information. What did it accomplish? I have read most of the emails above and it appears the great majority of the people think this was a mistake. The thing that jumps out at me most is the fact you will publish a list like this on the general public, but will not publish the list on the legislature - mean spirited??? Come on Max - be real. The effect of your published list can be harmful, can do good in disillusioning criminals - who really knows the effect. I do believe its Americans constitutional right to own firearms and to be able to protect their homes and families. And as evident by your list, there are a large number of Arkansans and people probably in all the other states - except Washington DC where the lawmakers wander around in the state of delireum - who follow the laws and legal possess firearms. The only ones the public has to be afraid of are the ones that dont. A lot of Arkansans have owned guns all their lives and this will always be the case. I cant figure out your vendetta against law abiding citizens. I think you owe an apology to everyone on the list you published. Guess my wife and i need to get on the concealed carry list - i want all criminals to know we are packing, and we know which end of the gun the bullett comes out of. A police officer i recently talked to about a handgun advised me to get one that used at least a 38 bullet - any thing less would just piss someone off if i were to shoot them. And if i were in the position to have to shoot someone, dont shoot to warn them. The only time i would be in this position would be if someone were to break into my house, threaten my family, or have the intent to rob, harm or terrorize me or someone i know. The nice thing about your article is that a lot of people will read it and make their own judgement about you and your publication. Free enterprise has a way of self correcting itself when the government stays out of it. Have a nice day.

Mr. Brantley,

I am an Arkansas CHCL instructor and CHCL holder. I apologize for those making personal threats to you and am embarrassed if they are CHCL holders. That sort of thing hurts the other law abiding CHCL holders. But like school teachers, doctors, lawyers, politicians, drivers and even journalists, it's impossible to have perfect screening procedures. But I can assure you the mistakes are few and far between.

That being said, I'd like to invite you to attend one of my CHCL classes and clear up your misconceptions about what the classes cover and the typical person trying to obtain a legal method of carrying a concealed handgun. Depending on the class, don't be surprised to see, teachers, school administrators (I've trained two), doctors, lawyers, and other professionals. I won't go so far as saying you are ignorant of the procedures, processes, training and the typical CHCL holder, but by what I seem to get from your blog and interviews, you are tremendously misinformed of the reality behind concealed carry.

Max - when you decide to publicly post lists of other groups of law-abiding citizens (or even some that may not be nearly as cleans as those who all passed a CC background check) I will at least allow that you did not intentionally plan harm to the concealed carry permit holders.

So, how about an article on listing all practicing Muslims in Arkansas, or how about all members of the Mormon Church, or Black Panther members, or those who belong to PETA? Maybe an article on those who have had abortions (with special emphasis on those under 18).
I won't hold my breath.

As I mentioned in John Brummett's blog, the Supreme court has, on more than one occasion, ruled that police and fire services are just that, "services", and that the government has no obligation to provide them.

By law the police do not have to respond to your 9-1-1 call and you have no recourse except to protect yourself or suffer the consequences. The final responsibility for you is you. Several Police Officers have told me the same thing.

Since 1991, the number of privately owned firearms in the U.S. has increased by 65-70 million, the number of right-to-carry states has increased from 15 to 40 and overall violent crime has decreased 38%. Snub your nose all you want but I submitted my concealed carry application a few weeks ago yet pray I never have to use my firearms except for practice and sport. Protecting my family vastly outweighs your smug opinion.

In case you haven't noticed, it doesn't matter if you have alarms systems, cameras, dogs or even mace bombs, criminal have become even more emboldened. A recent robbery in West Little Rock had 3 young men with bullet proof vests, brass knuckles, and handguns. If the owner hadn't owned a firearm, he and family could easily be dead today. instead, the three assailant are in jail.

Sadly, Max, you have has publicly alienated the people who are responsible enough to care to defend themselves, their families, their neighbors, and possibly even you & yours.

I can only hope that you have learned much in the recent weeks.
