Casino initiative

A Texas man who's submitted multiple ballot issue proposals to allow casino gambling in Arkansas has had his latest idea certified as to form by the attorney general. He got one approved in 2006, too, but dropped a signature drive to get it on the ballot. I wouldn't hold my breath, but this one would allow casinos in seven counties. They're already more or less allowed in two -- as racino monopolies at Southland and Oaklawn parks.

Oklahoma officials predicting their tax revenues will drop 12-20 million when the lottery in Arkansas cranks up. Add to that list what will happen in Missouri and other states surrounding our state and get an idea of what has been leaving Arkansas. Add to that all the casino tax revenues leaving the state.

Land of opportunity......for adjoining states.

It'll be great once we have our state-run lottery and more casinos. That will really stimulate our economy! (Please note the sarcasm.)

One more step for those who still believe the Gordon Gecko quote and corollary. "Greed is good" . . . "No matter what the consequences."

I agree with You Libertus and expect in five years or so that we all will regret legalizing the lottery and extending casino gambling at the race track or in the future. I used to have to drive out of state to see the drawbacks. Now I whenever I go to Hot Springs "National Park" I am sad at what it has become.

For those HS or HS Village bloggers, I apologize. You may like your home as it is, but I remember it thirty and forty years ago and quite frankly, it has not improved. it is not a place I look forward to visiting anymore.
