UCA's new math

Readers here have long cast doubts on the program. But audits reported this morning in the Democrat-Gazette are now confirming that concurrent enrollment -- colleges counting high school students in special classes -- cost UCA money. The numbers did inflate enrollment in the go-go Lu Hardin years.

PS -- It's hard to credit that a fresh start for UCA would include the return of former president Win Thompson. But who knows?

I think Ray Simon will be their man. Why anyone would even nominate someone who had to negotiate their way out of town is beyond me. Lu Hardin's early claim to fame was that he quickly accomplished the removal of the AAUP censure that Win won for them.

And they've already passed on the possibility of a female? Sheesh!

Win Thompson may not have been a diplomat, but I don't think any honest observer can deny the leaps and bounds of progress made by the university under his leadership.

Heh... that's not all that inflated their enrollment. Their admissions/research dep't got their hands slapped by ADHE for counting students that didn't even attend UCA... even if you decided to go to some other school but had been accepted to UCA, they counted you anyway. Puts a bit of a different light on Lu's enrollment numbers he kept spouting on all the commercials and press releases...
UCA's enrollment accounting is quite similar to Chicago's voter accounting. Just a difference of scale!
Come to think of it, that fight between UCA/ADHE might make an interesting story if anyone cared to FOI the messages between them... if only there were an alternative weekly paper that did that sort of thing... wink, wink!

I'm not interested in the shady goings on at UCA anymore, but I would like to encourage concurrent enrollment of high school students at all colleges. In Fayetteville it is extra convenient since the high school is just across the street from the U.

It's a great deal for parents and students, but a headache for the overpaid, lazy counselors and administrators at the high schools. There seem to be more grandparents than active parents in this old folks home of a blog, but if any of you still have high school kids in your future I encourage you to tackle the red tape and get your little monsters started collecting college credit early.

ARK. BLOG: "Old folks home of a blog." Hand me my cane, honey. This whippersnapper needs a flogging.

Whoscrumdown,
Sounds good doesn't it but why did UCA staff last year warn students applying for Honors College to be careful about using credits earned in high school? Their reasoning was that it was a good chance these credits did not prepare a student for the next level courses. Sounds like a scam to me. Students are pushed to take these classes but then their knowledge is questioned.

OPRA: "Win Thompson may not have been a diplomat, but I don't think any honest observer can deny the leaps and bounds of progress made by the university under his leadership."

I never taught there, but I suspect that there are a large number of faculty and former faculty who would honestly disagree with you. AAUP censure is serious evidence of weak leadership. AAUP doesn't censure just any school. It requires significant and ongoing leadership problems.

I guess you could bring him back and watch the feathers fly. But who gains from that?
