The business of Arkansas is ....

... government.

Sounds like another good Republican political ad.

Roby Brock reports that the number of government jobs in Arkansas far exceeds the number of manufacturing jobs. And, if trends continue, it should be the single biggest employment sector in a year or so. Government continues to grow, the largest sector (trade, transportation and utilities) is declining.

Likewise government may be the largest landholder in Ark.

If you reclassify some of the education and health care workers then
government is the largest employer.

Duh.

A small, rural state like Arkansas could certainly apply some efficiencies to government but, in fact, provides only minimum services and has minor regulatory efforts compared to our more prosperous, modern neighbors. We are a net importer of Federal tax monies.

The Republicans beat this drum loudly until elected and then milk government like a cash cow and stoke it with cronies who damage the system for years. The Republican mantra that government doesn't work really only applies to Republicans governance.

Economic pressures will certainly effect government over the next ten years. Our standard of living is about to take a big hit. The efficiencies of providing services for everyone is not likely to to be lost on people in economic distress. But, of course, that is what recession is for.

Gub'ment R Us everywhere in America. Like it or not, thems the facts.

If so many people earn their living via the 'Government' does that make us a communist state? Only a socialist state?

With the government soon to become the largest sector employer then maybe it is time to use its influence and push its green agenda. The government says that the would as we know it will soon end unless something is done, then just do it. The recent attempt to go to four day weeks does not fix the problem of extensive commuting. Make it policy that workers are encouraged and rewarded to live near their work. School districts should not allow their staff to live outside of their districts. Police and firemen should not be allowed to live outside of the cities they work. How much has it cost the city of Little Rock to allow police officers to use police vehicles to commute to their homes in Cabot and elsewhere?
Will Main Street in Little Rook soon be the home of another parking deck for state workers? Why do state workers need front door parking? If the state really wants to do something green then provide funding for an improved transit system for Little Rock. We don't need anymore money spent on highways to provide state workers limited time easy access to their homes outside the cities of LR/NLR.

Saywhat?

That only hire people inside certain boundaries sounds good but falls apart quickly once you look at it closely.

Is that only when hired? Or do you lose your job if you move?

What if Jacksonville school district peels away from the county district, do we fire all techers who no longer live in their district?

What happens when LR annexes some county land, do county employees now in the city get fired?

What happens when not enough qualified people in LR apply for fireman? Do we send street workers instead?

When the dogcatcher shows up at your house next time it catches fire, don't bitch to me.

Hiring is probably the hardest and the most critical function a manager has. The pool is always limited by those that can and by those that want to. To limit it further is idiotic.
