Prediction: Allen to win 'Idol'
Think Progress reports:
Rep. Brian Bilbray (R-CA) took to the House floor last week to sing the praises of American Idol contestant Adam Lambert, who is the favorite to win the show's finale on Wednesday. Commending Lambert for "his amazing journey" and for being "such a great star on American Idol," Bilbray read his name into the congressional record last week. "As one of Adam's favorite artists, Lenny Kravitz, once said: 'I just need to know that I did the very best I could and that I was true to myself," Bilbray noted. "Adam, we will be rooting for you and looking forward to your next unique and creative performance."
Where's the love, members of the Arkansas delegation, for Kris Allen?
UPDATE I: U.S. Rep. Vic Snyder, Allen's congressmen, sends this comment through a spokesman: "So far Kris seems to have wowed America quite well without any government help. Why jinx him now? GO KRIS!"
UPDATE II: Bigger news. American Idol is now fodder for Congressional Quarterly, one of the oldest and most serious names in the political reporting world. Article here applies political metrics to the hunt to be the winner of the talent show and predicts that Kris Allen's Southern roots will propel him to victory. A sample:
So what does any of this Southern political history have to do with American Idol?
Simple: American Idol is an election contest that, in style and format, most closely resembles a traditional Southern primary election, where finishing in second place in the first round of voting often leads to victory in the final round of voting.
And based on a close analysis of Southern primary election results, we can determine a pattern, draw conclusions, and then apply that analysis to this week's season finale of American Idol.
Consider:
The first data point we see demonstrated in the Southern primaries is that the more liberal candidate takes the early lead, but the more conservative candidate emerges victorious in the end.
Why?
Because in most of these elections, most of the electorate was conservative, but the conservative vote was split in the first round of voting among several different candidates; meanwhile, the liberal vote rallied behind just one candidate, and gave him a plurality in the first round.
NEWS RELEASE
CONWAY, Ark. – (APRIL 17, 2009) – As “American Idol” contestant Kris Allen eyes a spot in the show’s top five Tuesday, Arkansas stands behind its native son. An Official Citation issued Friday by two Arkansas Senators expresses support for Allen and states that he brings great pride to the Natural State.
State Senator Gilbert Baker, who represents Allen's hometown of Conway, and Senator Sue Madison of Fayetteville co-authored the citation to demonstrate statewide support for the singer. Both senators are encouraging Arkansans to vote for Allen each Tuesday.
“Kris Allen is a tremendous ambassador for Arkansas. He reminds of all of us, especially during this challenging time, that Arkansas is the land of opportunity and anything is possible if you believe in yourself and work hard while following your dreams,” Sen. Madison said. “Arkansans are proud of Kris and will continue to call and text in support of him each week. We wish him well as the ‘American Idol’ competition continues.”
The citation notes that Allen is a lifelong Arkansan and the product of Arkansas public schools. It acknowledges Allen’s work with New Life Church in Central Arkansas, Chi Alpha at the University of Central Arkansas (UCA) and missionary work in Morocco, Spain, Mozambique, South Africa, Thailand and Burma.
“Kris Allen is doing a great job representing Arkansas in this intense competition. His talent and character are obvious in every performance,” Senator Baker said.
Allen is the first Arkansan to earn a spot on the hit television show. After weeks of competition he is one of seven finalists from among tens of thousands of contestants who auditioned across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Allen has a chance to enter the show's coveted top five Tuesday, but the two contestants receiving the least votes will be eliminated because judges did not to eliminate anyone this week.
Fans in Central Arkansas are encouraged to attend a hometown viewing party for the next live episode of “American Idol” Tuesday at the Farris Center at UCA in Conway. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show airs at 8 p.m. The crowd will be encouraged to vote beginning at 9 p.m. for two full hours. The event is supported by the City of Conway Parks Department and Conway Corp.
Those wanting to vote for Allen, or any contestant of their choosing, will be able to do so for at least two hours after the show airs each Tuesday evening. Fans can vote toll-free at 1-866-IDOLS-01, -02 or whatever number denotes the specific contestant.

Senators Sue Madison and Gilbert Baker issued an Official Citation from the Arkansas Senate in support of Kris Allen back in April. The Citation was issued April 17, LONG before the California elected officials started showing love for Adam Lambert. Hopefully Kris will pull through tonight! Rock the vote everyone!

What's an "American Idol"? Surely, you can find better things to do than help FAUX make more money with goal of lowering (if it is possible?) the level of American intelligence.

Is "Southern roots" code for "he's not as gay as that other one"?

Anyone expecting a gay guy to win anything on Fox, except bashing, has taken leave of their senses.
And so Kris will win but Thursday too many Arkansans will still wake up poor, undereducated, underemployed, under healthcared, etc. etc. This is just another form of entertainment like sports that have been used by the power structure to keep the peasants happy [or at least from rioting in the streets.]
I admire all their talents [god only knows I don't have any] but let's keep perspective on this - it won't end the recession or stop global warming.

They certainly are, mr. bug-eyed-etc. I can't believe Fox didnt think up Dancing with the Stars (AKA Who the HELL are These People??) before ABC? did. it is on ABC, right? I admit it, fellow bloggers: I got hooked on that show when Emmitt Smith was a contestant and the eventual winner. But I've only seen Idol one time and that was at the fitness center, years ago.
Obviously, looking down, I need to go back to the fitness center and watch it some more........but it has done already closed down.

"...but the more conservative candidate emerges victorious in the end."
Proving the adage that Southerners are, at base, aginners - they may not know what they want, but they fer sher know what they are AGAINST: rational thought and the "elite," which is code for smarter than them...

American Idol style catterwalling wears me out. "Wipe-Out" is the what Philo T Farnsworth envisioned while plowing his Idaho potato field.

It's worse than we thought. NY Daily News calls it a red state-blue state showdown with all the implications you'd expect. See the link on name.

American Idol exposes millions to well-crafted songs decades-old that they might never have heard otherwise. These classic songs are often re-worked to appeal to a younger audience or give the songs a fresh sound. While this obviously serves the powers behind Idol by ramping up the royalties on the song catalog, it also serves the viewers by expanding their musical experience in a nation that has consistently cut funding and support for music education.
Many people under a certain age do not know the difference between rhyme and repetition.
Beyonce's You Must Not Know About Me is a prime example of repetition, not rhyme. Unfortunately if young artists limit themselves to listening to only certain styles of music they will never learn the difference.
So I applaud American Idol for that, and support Kris Allen as a musician, singer, and a seemingly nice guy, and hope he will say nice things about Arkansas. And maybe it will help the Arkansas music community in some way in the long run.

Well, certainly, guns in state parks. Churches.......Open courtrooms.........They should just make a list of places where it's ILLEGAL to take a damn gun nowadays because that would be a whole lot shorter.
I worry every Sunday -- does this dress go with my gun? Donations happily accepted for extra firearms to match my limited Sunday wardrobe.
Im going back to worrying whether or not HBO will be included in the stimulus money for converter boxes. I dont believe I want to fool with Direct TV after reading some of those comments after all, plus I dont know what Im doing, and I'd miss the local news shows.

Though I was pulling for Kris tonight, he was far overshadowed by Adam. Both are very talented, and I will not be surprised by a victory by either of them, but I thought Adam's talent blew Kris away tonight.
