Hang up the *&*$ phone

It was a morning like any other. A weaving car driving at erratic speeds bollixed up Cantrell Road traffiic flow. The driver was, naturally, gassing nonstop on a phone plastered to her ear.

So I was in a receptive mood for one of busy blogger Robbie Wills' dispatches. The House speaker noted that Arkansas has a new law that prohibits texting while driving. But it won't be possible to issue tickets until Oct. 1.

Meanwhile, he encourages people to not use phones of any kind while driving. He cited an article in Governing magazine. "Hands-free" laws are no cure for distracted phone user/drivers, research suggests.

What studies have found, however, is that the phone conversation itself is a distraction. In 2006, researchers at the University of Utah published a study that used a driving simulator. They found no difference in driving performance between people using hand-held and hands-free phones. Talking on a phone in either manner made drivers more likely to get into a rear-end collision than those who were legally drunk.

A study from Carnegie Mellon University in 2008 used brain imaging to look at what happens when drivers talk on the phone. Researchers found that simply listening to a cell phone conversation reduces the amount of brain activity used for driving by 37 percent. Still another study, from the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, placed cameras inside 100 cars. Although the study didn’t directly measure the risks of hand-held versus hands-free, it found that merely dialing a cell phone tripled the risk of getting into an accident. Just talking on a phone was distracting enough to increase the risk of having an accident by a factor of 1.3

Hang 'em up, dammit.

Very distracting. I can't count the times people have pulled out in front of me and chatting on the phone. Mostly female....of course.....*grin*

Please, please hang them up . . . it's so dangerous . . . but the people who KILL me are the ones who TEXT and drive. WTF???

and let's not forget the men who are shaving and the women who are putting on make-up (or vice-versa) while driving. I've even passed drivers on I-40 who are reading novels.

I am occasionally amazed to see men shaving, women putting on makeup (much more likely) or my favorite (before TEXTING? OMG!): reading while "driving." Last Friday coming home on I-40 some Moron had 25 cars backed up in the left (PASSING!) lane for several miles. In front of this guy was about 1/3 mi. of empty lane!! Traffic the way it was in the right lane it proved nearly impossible to get around him on the right. When FINALLY the car directly behind him and I were able to get by, indeed he was 'chatting' MADDENING: The assholes who cause road rage!

When I gestured to him to hang up/move over, he of course flipped me off. At least that sorta woke him up and he got almost up to speed, STAYING in the left lane but at least holding up fewer drivers... We have WAY too many laws, but banning cell phoning by drivers needs to move up to near the top of the list (of course below the unofficial "State Avocation" - tailgating: don't get me started...)!!

HA!! Like minds, sly...
;>)

I "drive" my Tevas everywhere. I have come close to being mowed down several times by a moron with a phone glued to their ear. And then, once they realize what they realize what they just did they act like it's my fault for being a pedestrian at a crosswalk with right-of-way!

Gee, I'm sorry for inconveniencing your lead foot. You're right, you do have right of way in your 1/2 ton of steel.

I've been waiting for this thread!

About a month or so ago, my husband and I were driving down 630E when the right lane slowed down near the University exit but no one was exiting.
As we passed in the middle lane what should we see but a middle-aged lady with the license plate MADD talking on her cell phone.
"It's ok, officer, I was only talking on my cell phone!"

Just yesterday afternoon on I-630, I watched a woman drive erratically for probably four miles. She was talking on her cell phone and weaving side to side. She went halfway into the median and even over into the middle lane, which was occupied. She almost rear-ended me once. Then, near the Baptist exit she actually did (okay, she just tapped my bumper, but all I knew for sure was that she had made contact).

We pulled to the shoulder and I got out of the car to inspect the bumper, which was fine and then I let her have it. I said that I had been watching the way she was driving and what the heck she was doing for those last few miles. She (the cell phone was gone at this point) said that she had just had her car serviced and the steering "wasn't tracking right." I said if that was true, why was she on the interstate? In the left lane? And talking on the phone?

She exited the interstate at the next exit. I felt better.

i think the stat for wrecks talking on the phone vs drinking is only true of people who really LISTEN to what the other person is saying and get distracted.

Not i though. I make it a point to NOT really pay attention to people who call me while i'm driving. Why do i answer? Still haven't figured that out. But after about 1-2 minutes of talk time, i've thrown in about 20-30 "uh-huh" and "yeah's" as i brake at a light or make a lane change. I'm way more likely to miss something someone says then to ram in the back of another car. Is that because i am a great defensive driver? Maybe. But i think it's more likely i only half-way listen to what people say on the phone. I prefer get this, TEXT messaging to talking on the phone. Get to the point faster.

Texting and driving. Whole notha issue.

With such concrete scientific evidence in hand the Gov and the General Assembly will surely craft the appropriate legislation to curb this problem. Just like they did on global warming issues and the shale gas russian roulette game that was so close to starting us down the road to ruin. Those folks are so darn prudent, ya know?

Life was so much easier when the only driving distraction was not smoking cigarette while driving or reaching for a beer in the back set ice chest, but trying not to spill ones whisky and coke while aiming for a snake in the road.

It is safer to not talk on the phone or text while driving.
It is also safer not to talk to a passengers, listen to the radio, drink coffee, or think about anything other than driving...

meh

When I used to live in LR I made the drive to Springdale at least once a month. On I-40 the worst drivers are teen age girls (female, myself) I have seen them paint their fingernails, put on makeup, style their hair. At least the males only went fast in a straight line!

Now that I live in Springdale, I don't have to make that drive but I-540 is as scary.

The nice thing about the Interstates is the frequency of straight-line stretches, which mean you can take short naps. If you're asleep you won't be bothered by texters and celll-phone callers. I don't advocate reclining the seat, but with practice you can sleep sitting up. Something should be done about people blowing their horns at you. You would think other drivers would have consideration. I will say one thing about teenage girls talking and fingernail-painting while driving -- they rarely blow their horns at me. So who says the young have no manners?
