E. Lynn Harris is dead

E. Lynn Harris, the best-selling Arkansas author known for contemporary stories about African-Americans, died today during a West Coast book tour.

His personal assistant confirmed an unspecified health event for us this morning. He was stricken while staying at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills. His death has been confirmed by the local coroner, but an autopsy will be necessary to determine the case of death

Arkansas Sports 360 provided the first formal report that Harris had died. The item did not cite a source, but Harris was close to the UA Athletic Department and had worked as coach and sponsor of the cheerleaders. Black Voices later confirmed the report, citing a spokesman for his publisher.

Word of the health event began making the rounds on Twitter earlier in the morning.

Born in Michigan, Harris grew up in Little Rock. He attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, where he was the school's first black cheerleader. He continued to be a diehard Razorback fan. He has taught adjunct courses in the English department, most recently last fall.

His latest book, "Basketball Jones," is about the gay lover of an NBA star. Says the publicity blurb: "In Basketball Jones, E. Lynn Harris explores the consequences of loving someone who is forced to conform to the rules society demands its public heroes follow. Filled with nonstop twists and turns, it will keep readers riveted from the first page to the last." According to his website biography, Harris, 54, divided his time between Fayetteville and Atlanta.

Loved his books. I met him when his play came to the Robinson, and at his book signings on the river market. He was always cordial and out going. He will be missed in the literary world.

I was such a fan of E. Lynn Harris. I have many of his books, books that shocked, amused, enlightened, and tickled me from start to finish. He was an amazing writer, and he will be missed.

Sad. Tragic. This loving, creative man fought a LOT in his too-short life.

I am shocked and saddened to hear this! I am a big E. Lynn fan and have all his books. Gone too soon....

Wow! I am very sad about this news. E Lynn is my favorite author! RIP E LYNN and thank you so much for sharing your awesome creative works with us. You will be missed!

I cannot believe this!!!! I just finished "Basketball Jones". I have read all of his books. Each and every one of them. They made me cry, laugh, and sometimes understand life a little better. E. Lynn Harris came out at a time when there weren't that many african american authors, and naturally I gravitated to him and his books. I didn't care what the subject was, I just knew I had to read it. I was tired of reading Danielle Steele and longed for something else. He came on the scene hot and full of fire. I will truly miss you E. Lynn and may God continue to bless your family during this difficult time.

I love you!!!!!!!

How sad! He was creative, funny and way intelligent. I love "And This Too Shall Pass". Will definitely miss him.

It's so hard to believe. E. Lynn Harris, one of the greatest authors of our time, surely my favorite . I have read every book published by him and I thank him for the education I acquired thru his books. He will never be forgotten and always missed.
Much love and respect to him and his work.

ELynn was a friend, if only in passing. I always loved hearing from him. Such a wonderful voice to many whose voice was quieted too soon.

RIP, my friend. You will be missed sorely.

I am really sad and shocked to hear the news of E. Lynn Harris passing. He became a friend in the late 90's (1996) as I started grad school. He and his partner at the time kept in touch and encouraged me to do well while pursuing my degrees, but we lost out of touch with one another over the years. Sadly, I learned a lesson here that is not to be taken lightly. This goes to say to anyone that reads this...that if you meet someone in your lifetime with a genuine heart and that you can build a friendship with, please share, grow, and mature it. Don't just let time fly-by because it is in time it could be to late before you see that person again. Case and point. Also, keep in touch and enjoy each other's friendship because everyday is not promised. This goes to say with family members too!

I can attest and agree with you all that he will be missed. He was a caring, giving, supportive, talented human being to all who got to meet/know him. May he RIP.

So sorry to hear of his death. He was such a wonderful writer, I really enjoyed his books.

Elynn was my wonderful friend on the football field when we cheered our Razorbacks together in college. He was a big supporter when we started the first Pom Pom Squad at U of A. He loved beauty and talent and the University of Arkansas to his core. He was so proud of the spirit squads and his roll in it all. Just this last year, he proudly showed me the cheerleaders and pom squad at Homecoming in Fayetteville. It was such special moment for both of us now as parents of students there to sit back and see our earlier efforts and dreams come true. He was a gentleman and a gentle man. I respected his work as a writer and was so happy for his success. I can only imagine how difficult it must have been in those early years to live his life...but what I will miss and remember most...it's still with me...is his energy and zest for life, his pride, and his smile. He was my cheerleader. I'm just so sad. Justine Dudley Albree

I am so proud to be E Lynns cousin. Thank you all for your kind remarks and continue to pray for his mother and sisters. I can only be happy now because he is with Aunt Bessie, his grandmother whom he had such a great love for.

We miss you E. Lynn.

WOW! I received a text message last night around 12:30 am with the news that E. Lynn Harris was dead. I was completely shocked! I was a former flight attendant and E. Lynn Harris was my best friend on some of my most dreadful overnights in cities that I had no interest in exploring. I even cheated sometimes in reading E. Lynn Harris in the galley of the aircraft, when I was supposed to be preparing meals. LOL He will be truly missed. He really helped me as a single black women living in the (down low) horrors of the District of Columbia. Once again he will be truly missed. I will be going to the mall today to pick up "Basketball Jones". Rest in peace and much love to the parents of this writing genius.
