Huck and the law in Iowa
Interesting article here about a Republican candidate for governor in Iowa, Bob Vander Plaats. He was chairman of Mike Huckabee's Iowa presidential primary campaign. Vander Plaats has apparently decided gay marriage is his big ticket, after a couple of losing bids for statewide office.
When the Iowa Supreme Court legalized same sex marriage earlier this year, Vander Plaats asked [Gov. Chet] Culver to issue an executive order to ''put a stay on the court's opinion until the Legislature acts.''
Culver's advisers said the governor has no power to do that. Vander Plaats disagrees.
''I've got constitutional lawyers that back me up,'' he said.
When asked to identify them, he named former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia and Herb Titus, a Virginia attorney. He did not name any Iowans.
The only lawyer in that group is a religious nut.

I've seen several bios recently that touted the subject's Phi Beta Kappa status. Some that raised considerable doubt. So I went to the PBK site, but couldn't find a way to verify that a person actually was awarded the key. Titus so claims, but I wonder.
(Incidentally, I certainly don't.)

My dog is a constitutional lawyer, too, if huckabee is. Also, he's more discerning about handouts -- he doesn't take everything he's offered. And if he doesn't like you, he'll just bite you and be done with you, instead of acting friendly to your face, especially if gifts are involved, and then talking about you behind your back.
If my fine little dog happened to be the governor of our fair state, he says, he would immediately spay & neuter all members of the legislature, and he would personally round up Jim Bob Duggar for the procedure, which he would donate, of course. If the shelter can force my dog to part with his very own family jewels*, then he wants to put a stop to excessive reproduction of humans, too. Mike Beebe would be exempt because he seems to have some sense to him, and he called our neighbor personally when her handicapped son's health coverage got taken away by a computer glitch, then the next day he got it fixed.
*unfortunately, of course i support spaying & neutering of pets too, but I do think the dog's on the right track, starting with the duggars and those big ol' huckabee kids.
also, if a po-lice catches you with a meth lab in your residence, and you have children in there too, you will be spayed and/or neutered just as soon as possible.
I'm not sure about his position on judge proctor, but Im pretty sure it involves flea infestation. We don't have fleas, but he could order some, of course, for this one.
If you have any questions, please contact DBI as this is one of the Wonder Dog's scheduled naptimes.
Constitutional lawyer, my hind foot.

Laws? You need Laws. You don't need no stinkin laws! You just need a fresh look at what you do got.
You need a law. Ok, we bring together the best minds of the 18th Century and you will have your laws.
tina, our dogs do need to spend some time together. Just this morning Pippin the Dog was tellin us
how much she dreaded ever having to go to the pound with those "other dogs" who have been operated on.

Wow this story is almost wierder than hearing about DEMOCRATIC SENATOR BLANCHE LINCOLN and her mystifying LACK OF SUPPORT for a public option in health reform. Well I guess it really isn't so mystifying considering she recieved over $1million in campaign contributions from health insurance companies and private hospitals. Let her know she NEEDS to support REAL HEALTH REFORM. without a strong public option it is pointless.

"On many occasions, Governor Huckabee titled Bob Vander Plaats the "next Governor of Iowa," suggesting he may run for Governor again in 2010."
That would make Plaats THIRD attempt to become guv of Iowa.

I'm willing to take Wikipedia's word that Titus was PBK at the U. of O., a fine school, and that he was cum laude at Harvard Law, which is a much bigger deal. Just proves that there are plenty of school-smart folks who have a brain crater where their common sense should be.
I once had a brother-in-law, proud Mensa member, med-mal claims adjuster for St. Paul back when they wrote most of the coverage, who spent most of his spare time taking pictures of ghosts. Wrote a book about it. Didn't have the mechanical sense to change a light bulb.
By the way, since I'm taking a break from sweaty yard work, enjoying the most recent of several vodka collinses and putting off attacking the poison ivy that has taken over Ms Ruth's iris bed, I will share with y'all (if any of y'all are actually reading) the charming story I used to tell First Wife.
Pretty much anyone's monkey can get a PBK key their senior year (as did First Wife). It's just a percentage thing. The trick is to get one when you're a 21-year-old college junior and know pretty much everything there ever will be to know.
Cute, wasn't I?

Oh Shit, July Fourth is usually a grand time for GOP. Now this:
Tea Party Movement Loses Steam: July 4th Events Get Little Media, GOP Support
In the run-up to the first round of Tea Parties, conservative activists were aided enormously by coverage from Fox News and the endorsements of many Republican stars. Fox News ran dozens of segments about the events, dispatching five of its stars - Sean Hannity, Greta Van Susteren, John Gibson, Glenn Beck, and Neil Cavuto - across the country to cover them live. Newt Gingrich endorsed the events, speaking at a Tea Party in Times Square and dispatching talking points to protesters through his American Solutions organization. Dozens of Republican members of Congress spoke at the events. Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele passed up an opportunity to attend a Chicago Tea Party after being denied a speaking slot, but in May he told RNC members that the tide was turning against the Obama administration because "change is being delivered in a tea bag."
But the collaboration between the official Republican establishment and the Tea Parties has not lasted into June.

eLwood, tell Pippin that Fred and I will always have a spot for her in our home should you and the mrs. need a doggy=sitter. The pound, and the vet's kennel with those awful cages - i had to board my doggie the last time i was in the hospital and he was traumatized, too -- I know it was because he had had to spend a week in the shelter. But then he got to come home with us and our crazy life.
he has me very well trained now.
Now over there in the Palin thread, people are saying she resigned because she needed more time to prepare for a presidential run. But the first thing that popped into my mind was, I wonder what SHE did? Is hers the next sex scandal fixin' to break?
I remember when both my dear children were college juniors and did, in point of fact, know everything. i used to tell the older one all the time that his scholarship really could be put to better use by someone else since he already knew it all........
