Race and Young Repubs -- LOL
Those pesky Internet tubes.
Take Audra Sigler Shay, a Fort Smith native and former UA student who now lives in New Orleans and who is running this month to be elected national chairman of the Young Republicans.
She has a busy Facebook page. As this screenshot shows, (click on image to expand it) she opened a comment thread recently by saying, "OK I think Wal-Mart just signed a death warrant in my eyes." This is a reference to Wal-Mart's joining with a union and a liberal think tank in endorsing mandatory employee health insurance. Sounds like a YR. As do many of her Facebook friends. For example, Eric Piker responded [all sic]:
.... obama is the new terrorist ... muslim is on there side ... need to take this country back from all these mad coons ... and illegals
Responded Audra Shay
You tell em Eric! lol
It's possible that Shay, who was born in 1971, didn't know that Piker wasn't talking about Gillett dinner fare (explanation for out-of-state readers: it's a fabled raccoon supper in a small Arkansas town) in his use of the word coon.
The good news is that several others on Shay's page called down the use of the language, as did a Republican who sent the screenshot of the page to me. A Republican blog has picked up the thread. It said criticism of Obama is one thing, but "using racist words and seemngly to applaud such words is just plain wrong."
Arkansas YR leadership has endorsed Shay. To be generous, she seems, at a minimum, clueless.
UPDATE: A spokesman for Shay has provided her statement on the matter. It's on the jump. She says it's a "desperate" effort by opponents to derail her certain victory.
STATEMENT FROM AUDRA SHAY
Dear Friends and Supporters,
Yesterday on Facebook, an unfortunate incident occurred. An individual posted two comments on my Facebook wall, the first comment arguing against big government and the second filled with racially charged comments. I responded supporting the individual's first post, to continue the fight against big government spending. I was not aware of the racial comments until sometime later, when a third individual brought it to my attention. I immediately deleted the derogatory and outright disgusting comments and subsequently posted a statement on my Facebook Status stating that in no way, shape or form are the comments posted by other individuals a reflection of me or my beliefs as an American, a Veteran, a Mother or a Candidate. I do not, nor would I ever, condone that type of language or behavior.
Unfortunately, my opponents have now spun a web of misconception and untruths, desperately trying to paint me as a racist. Nothing could be farther from the truth. In fact, I have made it part of my Young Republican life to ensure that we did not just focus on outreach, but inclusion. Under my leadership as Chairman of the State of Louisiana's Young Republicans, we were able to raise $90,000 for a minority outreach media campaign. Also under my leadership as Louisiana Chairman we brought the largest minority delegation to the YRNF Convention in 2007.
It is a disgrace that these types of political attacks are taking place and once again, it proves that my opponents will stoop to the lowest levels to steal this election from the jaws of victory. Our Team is one of honor and integrity. We take this service to heart and will not allow others to tarnish our reputations. If you have any questions or concerns about this matter or any other matters, please email, call or Facebook message me. I'm always available.

What about the comment immediately below???? Where the person sees "Obama Faces" every time they go to WalMart and wonders if they should go ahead and buy things for them now or wait to be taxed.
Remember this always: Not all Republicans are racist, but all racists vote Republican. And the Republicans welcome it.

Country Boy, I take exception to the statement "Not all Republicans are racist, but all racists vote Republican. And the Republicans welcome it." The Democrat base is filled with racists and those who believe that blacks are inferior and therefore require more help than "regular" folk. Also, it's worth noting that the only blatant racism in the 2008 elections came from your camp. Let's just keep that in mind when saying partisan falsehoods.

I am a troll? lol
Not sure where that's coming from, especially since this is the first time I've ever posted here. Nevertheless, it's important that we realize that racism is not a partisan issue and that if we're going to combat it affectively then we need to call it like it is, evil and un-Godly. And take it seriously.
Democrats and Republicans alike need to stand against racism in all its forms, including affirmative action and talking down to minorities as if we don't belong here. That's the beginning and end of it.

If you're saying the Klan, for example, voted for Obama, get a grip.
If you're saying that pointing out that white men run the world is racist, call me a racist. I grew up in Harrison and I never saw a black person until I was 17 and visited Little Rock. You know why? Because they ran them all out of town.
I'm a white male and I'll say straight out we're the world's worst whiners when it comes to someone doing onto us as we did onto them. We haven't begun to suffer for our sins.
When white people need the 101st Airborne protecting them so they can go to school, I'll change my mind.

Moshe babbles:
"Also, it's worth noting that the only blatant racism in the 2008 elections came from your camp."
Uh, what exactly are you talking about? Better yet, what planet were you on last fall? I don't remember any "blatant racism" on the part of Obama, or the Democratic Party, but I sure do remember a whole lot of appearances by McCain and Palin at campaign rallies that were only differentiated from Klan meetings by the absence of hoods and burning crosses.
Not to mention the republican-party-circulated campaign materials suggesting Obama would heavily subsidize fried chicken and watermelon.
Or the smear campaigns (openly espoused by McCain's Virginia campaign director, among others) accusing Obama of being a terrorist, secret-Muslim Manchurian Candidate.
I could go on (and on, and on, and on) with further examples, but that would be beating a dead horse.

Well, the kids nowadays don't know how to make ice if the ice maker is broken. And apparently, they're not receiving a proper education in the history of racial slurs. Still, I'd like to believe that Shay's ignorance about the word is a positive sign for the future. When those terms are abandoned from common usage in our daily language, I think it will reduce racism.

If this is the level of Young Republican "leadership" the country is in for one party rule for a long long time, and it won't be them! Such incredible historical, social and intellectual ignorance I have never seen in adults. The biggest capitalist enterprise is called communist. The history of their own country is like foreign matter to them. They are as informed about race less than was Archie Bunker. At least Archie was funny, these folks are frightening.
When one claims as an accolade the election of Vitter to the Senate, all satire in the world disappears. My god woman, do you have PTS from your time in the Army and just don't realize it? What's worse, the people around you are clueless droids. I am going to petition Congress to include in a new health care reform bill free brain transplants for folks like you who are in desparate need of a coherent thought.

Well, thankfully there is an honest one amongst them.
ERIC PIKER deserves an award, not for clarity-because it's ANGRY that is bringing out the
99.9% WHITE Teabaggers-but for having the youthful exuberance/directness to say it like it is for Republics. Eric need not sneak behind closed doors and tell his coon jokes nor disguise them like Trent Lott. No Rush's "Magic Negro" for Eric. He just calls a black person a "coon" and gets it over.
So Eric, get your misplaced modifer, "mad" away from your "coons" cause Eric, the "coons" are celebrating, dude. It's like a white tea party in So. Africa should a WASP ever win again.

Did y'all read the comments over on 'the Republican blog'? I was quite surprised to see the responses condemning the statemens made by Shay and especially the ignorance of Eric's comments. This gives me a tiny glimmer of hope that not all younger Republican types are going to tolerate this sort of mentality within their party. That's not to say, however, that there are many redeemable qualities within the overall group. I still remember the shouts and slurs from the McCain/Palin rallies. What is it with these people??????
I don't understand how these people can remain so willfully ignorant. Most of them appear to be educated, (well, with the exception of Eric) but were they paying any attention? Do they know how to research or do they simply lap up the talking points that are handed down from Limbaugh and the other loons? What a sad, sad bunch of people.

THIS IS OUT OF CONTROL!!!!!! The issue here is racism, NOT age and not whatever else people are tangentially talking about.
Clearly there are Democrats on here that have a poor view of Republicans. There is little that we can do to help them or dialogue as they appear to be bent on saying whatever they feel like. But to the Republicans that are harping on Audra's age, I can't support that either. The charter of the Young Republicans states that a Republican from 18-40 (inclusive) is a full and welcome member of the federation. If you have you a problem with people 38 (or over 35?) then work to change our charter, not knock those who have done nothing wrong in that regard.
Let's bring this back to a discussion of racism, responsibility, and the need to bring an end to baseless hurt and hate.
My 2 cents...

I agree totally with your statement! Black people are TOTALLY cool being called coon. Black people know that whites are always "just joking" as I'm sure this woman's little friend was when he made another comment that blacks better watch themselves in his town (check the link). That's not serious at all. No, it means nothing to imply that you'll physically harm someone because of the color of their skin and it certainly doesn't make you a racist to say something like that!
SERIOUSLY???? ARE WE REALLY HAVING THIS DEBATE IN THIS DAY AND AGE????? HOW IS THIS NOT TOTALLY OFFENSIVE TO EVERYONE WHO READS IT?????? HOW IS IT EVEN POSSIBLE THAT A GROUP OF PEOPLE WOULD ELECT SOMEONE WHO THINKS IT'S O.K. TO CALL THE PRESIDENT A "COON"?!

jazzy,
Thanks for enlightening us all on how there are regional differences in meanings of words. I don't think your observation makes "coon" any less a racial slur in Arkansas, however.
I recall an English professor I had at Fayetteville who was from the midwest and marveled that (in those days anyway) in the south "cock" was synynomous with vagina, rather than meaning penis, as it did in the rest of the country. Nevertheless, that didn't make it all right to call a guy a cocksucker, even though it may have technically been referring to cunnilingus. He offered that where he came from, a "hog" was slang for hard-on. Somehow, that meaning has never taken hold in Arkansas.
So Cajuns notwithstanding, around here "coon" is a racial slur unless, of course, it is capitalized and you are Republican and your first name is Ken.
ARK. BLOG: I spent the first years of my life in SW La. I had a full house of Comeauxs next door. I went to school with Richards, Fontenots, Breauxs, Desormeauxs and all the rest.
And I'm telling you this for a flat certainty. You could say the C word if you were a C. Or if you were a very good friend of a C. Much like the use of the N word is used in the black community today. But I wouldn't advise that you walk into John's Barn in Lake Charles, La. and bray, "Hey, what are you coonasses up to, tonight?" One of the Poche boys might hand you back your head on a plate.

Audra Sigler Shay is not fit to lead any organization--unless you think this crap is ok. Why haven't the Arkansas young Republicans thrown this woman under the bus like they did State Senator Kim Hendren for making a Jewish slur?
Remember that? Hendren said, "That Jew" and the Arkansas kiddos said "Republicans and Arkansans have enough of a challenge surmounting dated, backwards stereotypes, and Hendren's comments are a step in the opposite direction from everything young conservatives believe."
Where are you now Arkansas Republicans? Young or old--this woman is an embarrasment.
Can you imagine what a field day the Dems are going to have with this loose cannon if she is somehow able to win?
And, what if she does win? What are the young Republicans thinking??? Even if she is not a racist pig like her friend Eric--yes, her friend Eric--then she should at least have the good sense to read what has been written on her stupid Facebook wall.
Mrs. Shay's response is about as lame as I have ever seen. Complete lack of responsibility. Nobody made her be friends with Eric the Bigot and nobody made her encourage any of his comments and think they were funny. Check out the worst comment on that Republican Blog Max linked to--it has Eric the Bigot saying "if yur ass is black dont let the sun set on it in a Southern Town. "
Come on, Mrs. Shay, take some responsibility. You are not a leader. You are a disgrace to the Republican Party and should take yourself out of the public eye and stay home and stay off the internet!
