Sympathy for Sarah

Here's a fresh take on Sarah Palin, in an editorial written by Ernest Dumas for the Arkansas Leader. He cuts no slack to John Ensign or Mark Sanford. And he notes that Mike Huckabee likely profits most -- divine intervention? -- from the backward march of potential presidential opponents in his party. But for Palin, the editorial finds sympathy.

Her incoherent and irrational explanation for resigning only a little more than two years in office dismayed even her ardent supporters, but we found some grudging admiration for the woman for the first time. She did not demonstrate the resilience and toughness that she had boasted about and that are the requisites for a president, but we found the humanity of her act understandable and touching.

She can’t take it anymore — the strife and pressures of political contention — and she wants it to stop, for herself as well as for her family.

... The ordinary wizened politician — Bill Clinton, Richard Nixon, John Kerry, John McCain and, yes, Mike Huckabee — can handle those pressures and thrive on them. But not many of us, and not Sarah Palin. Her 18-minute farewell (though she may not have intended it to be) was not impressive, but it was human.

And who is Earnest Dumas? And old, bitter, dried up, Gazette has been working for a free weekly.

Alaska bought a pig in a poke and had decided to not recognize that attending 4 or 5 colleges for a 4 year degree was red flag number one.

McCain was either insane to pick an untested unknown for Washington DC hardball or figured he was tanking and had no chance so he went for attractive over substance.

I hire for a region and although we require a 4 year degree we would not consider someone with her college record unless there were major reasons such as personal or family illness, military service, or natural disasster such as Katrina.

We also would be very hesitant of someone that has a history of 2 or 3 years max at all previous jobs.

Alaskans decided that smart is not a requirement and we all can't fault them too much since the whole dang country decided 9 years ago that smart was not needed for POTUS either.

But I do not forgive Palin, not for quitting the governorship but for being so vain that she could not recognize that she was not qualified for Vice POTUS.

Does this post make any sense?

(And why can't people in Arkansas spell Ernest? Poor Ernie Passaliague, with that exotic first name!)

And who is Sarah Palin? A young, bitter, dried up quitter and soon to be ex-gubernator of barely populated Alaska. Did the snow geese or polar bears vote her in?

She's a LOSER in LargeAss's all caps.

(Make that Passailaigue.)

'member..........."your Department of Law"

from Sarah explaining how in federal office she would have been protected?

Well, it's sorta a LIE too about not being protected in Alaska, home of SOCIALISTS.

"Key Reason Palin Gave For Quitting Appears To Be False

"One of the chief reasons Sarah Palin has given for resigning as Governor of Alaska is that her state's taxpayers are being forced to spend money defending her government against ethics complaints that would otherwise fund teachers, cops, and road repair.

But in response to our questions, a spokesperson for the Alaska governor's office just effectively conceded to us that this isn't true. The revelation makes the resignation episode even stranger, and raises fresh questions about the real reasons for her abrupt departure.
But David Murrow, a spokesperson for the Governor, conceded in an interview that much of this money had been budgeted in advance for government lawyers - and would have gone to them anyway, even if state lawyers hadn't been defending against these ethics complaints.

In response to our questions, the Governor's office provided us with a detailed breakdown of the millions Palin has claimed has gone to defending against ethics complaints. It does list roughly $1.9 million in expenditures.

But Murrow, the spokesperson, acknowledged to our reporter, Amanda Erickson, that this total was arrived at by adding up attorney hours spent on fending off complaints - based on the fixed salaries of lawyers in the governor's office and the Department of Law. The money would have gone to the lawyers no matter what they were doing. The complaints are "just distracting them from other duties," Murrow said.

In other words, while these lawyers might have been free to do other legal work for the state, the ethics complaints have apparently not had the real world impact Palin has claimed, and wouldn't have drained money away from cops, teachers, roads and other things.

My women's lib soul at first read Ernie to say that he thinks only MEN can handle the "pressures and thrive on them." Then I reread and thought, no, Ernie didn't mean it thataway.

This probably had little to do with handling the pressure of it all. Most likely it dawned on Poor Little Palin that she:
1. Cannot while serving as governor of a-LAS-ka duplicate the top shelf lifestyle she lived being whisked in limos and elbowing with multi-jazillionaires and shopping in New York City.
2. Looks at Huck who's living the lifestyle with his show and all ... and says to herself "I can do THAT! and get paid darn well for it, by golly."
You Betcha Sarah. It will be a lot easier to fly to those $peaking engagements, pick up a fat check and get back home if you live in the lower 48.

And who is Ernest Dumas, an old Gazette has-been? Who has to ask such a question? It's better to be a has-been than a never-was, daddy told me more than once. I certainly don't agree with everything Ernest Dumas writes, but I thoroughly respect him for honesty, insight and intelligence.

Ernest Dumas has paid his dues. Period.

Harry is confused about what Ernie Dumas wrote about Palin because he can't read very well. What he can read, he can't interpret.

There is no need to defend Mr. Dumas, an editorialist who has stood the test of time, whose writing reads between the lines that most of us have trouble deciphering.

Dumas doesn't need my defense. Nobody who writes that well does.

Of course this thread is not supposed to be about Ernie Dumas and he would disappointed if it was. I haven't had a chance to read the text or listen to Sarah Palin's 18-minute resignation speech. If the summaries and the sound clips are representative, then the humanity of which Ernie speaks is not clear. I would have more sympathy for her if she had said something like this:

"My political career has brought an unexpected media spotlight on my family. It has created serious negative pressures and stress on our family. As a result, my husband and I have decided that our family is more important than my political ambitions. Therefore I am resigning as Governor of Alaska and placing my political career on hold until my children are grown."

THAT would have won both my respect and my sympathy. But she, either through incompetence or guile, did not give a clear picture of her intentions and seems to have tried to leave the door wide open for continuing her dalliance with national politics. For that I have no respect. This ambiguity is either because she is too stupid to clearly use the English language or because she wants to somehow protect her family, a family that she herself has pushed out on the national stage, as she continues her own political ambitions.

Either reason totally disqualifies her, IMHO, from political leadership. If she and her family can't handle the stress of Alaskan politics, how in the world can she handle the rigors of national leadership?

And I still believe that she is dumber than a sack of hair....

I don't feel a bit sorry for Sarah Palin. She should have told John McCain "Thanks, but no thanks." I am one thousand percent smarter than Sarah Palin but I know in my heart I am not qualified to be the VP, let alone POTUS.
And, Ernie, I love your columns and you almost convinced me...and you don't deserve any critics calling you names.
Another topic...............Damn!
Now I'm seeing one of those commercials run by a "Secure and Prosperous America" against health care for all.
F*** that. I need health insurance that I can afford.

The "Secure and Prosperous America" outfit running those ads is a right wing group (Surprised?) started and staffed by Republican right-wingers.
Maybe I am in the wrong line of work. These people get rich playing the emotion game, i.e., fear and paranoia, coupled with "conservative values."

May I close this Dumbass dumb ass piece?

Ernie Dumas is the best -- ever.

The one to least benefit from Palin's decision is our very own Mike Huckabee. She will definitely get the majority of the Chistian vote for the Republican nomination, and there goes Huck losing once more.

Oh, Kizzy...I am so glad you pointed out that commercial. I saw that tonight and just shook my head. The commercial was "Goverment insurance Bad, Private insurance Good". Yet almost every elected official recieves government backed healthcare....paid for by taxpayers dollars, for life! But we are supposed to call Blanche and tell her we don't want that ole' mean government developing a healthcare plan that would gives us AlL some form of coverage.

The people who are behind this commercial are the same people that believe Palin is gonna be the "king maker" in the Republican party for the 2012 elections.

Scottie, thanks,
This is so important that I plan to get this information out to every media outlet in the state of Arkansas. It is time that people who are really suffering have a voice.
Secure and Prosperous America, my ass. I would hope that everyone on this blog supports universial health care. For all its flaws, it's still the best option, as every other industrialized nation knows.

This one is easy...Ernie isn't a mean guy and it's hard to be mean to a woman so utterly lost as Sweet Sweet Sarah. Sarah was a cheerleader, George W. Bush was a cheerleader....see a connection? If the Wasilla Sports Complex/Her House thing doesn't get her, then it's true, Sarah has grown tired of the work, grown tired of the justified attacks, and has looked to our own Huck to see a better way to live. How can you beat money for nothing?

And by the way, if you want to puke up in your own throat, get on Facebook and friend Mike Huckabee. I rode on to his page tonight on the back of a Kool-aid drinking friend and saw enough to never desire food ever again. That Huck....he's got an ego on him....Jesus. There are pictures of Huck with captions like "I thought you'd enjoy seeing me wearing my Team Huck shirt." Yeah right, nothing more on earth I want to see worse than a re-fatted, middle aged, balding, rat-eyed, minor Republican politicians showing himself off like he's the prize behind door number 3. I'd rather watch Edward Sissorhand masturbate. But if you've got a stronger stomach than I do...friend Mikey and see what kind of people suck up to him like he's God. If religion makes this many people that stupid....include me out forever!

But back to Sarah....she's a train wreck. But think for a minute about who lives in Alaska. My black sheep uncle would drive off in the night and go live in Alaska until he burned all his bridges and then he'd come back to revive and fool some other old woman until he had enough nest egg to drive back to Alaska. I live with Oklahoma less than a mile away and I promise you them people are different! Civilization doesn't start till you get to Tulsa and then it runs out again a few miles west.

Alaskans are stranger than that. Except for the native born Alaskans, the rest are misfits with a hankering for adventure. They like roughing it, they like shooting and eating it, they're a wild bunch. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but don't be expecting Alaskans to lead the pack in IQs.....ain't gonna happen. NPR pointed out that Sarah Palin is the most famous Alaskan we've ever known....and I thought about it and I can't name another person from Alaska. Will Rogers and Wiley Post left their DNA across a mile strip of Alaska when their plane crashed back in 1935...but they were just visiting.

So I'll give it Palin...she is the biggest thing to come out of Alaska..for what that's worth. But she shoulda stuck with doing sports on TV. She's probably smart enough to handle that and if she'd a stuck with it, by now she'd be making a comfortable income and no one would know about her goofy family and their very strange ways.....which may be par for Alaska...but sure doesn't fit the lower 48 and sure as hell doesn't belong in the White House.

Can't everyone see that dumbass and corruption has just about killed our country? McCain has been a fake since the first time anyone heard of him. Maverick is another term for NO FK'ING ATTENTION SPAN...and that's been as clear as a bell for all of McCain's career in Congress. His military record is dismal though I honor the time he spent as a prisoner of the North Vietnamese. If his daddy hadn't been a big muck, McCain would have never come home alive. He's dumb and he must have been drunk when he picked Sweet Sweet Sarah....or like that lobbyist chick...he was doing her too.

Well...I don't really care who anyone is doing as long as everyone agrees and everyone is over 18. But standing on a soap box preaching against sin while you're up to your pubic hair IN sin doesn't seem so American to me. The cuckold husband of Ensign's lover dropped a bomb on him today and by the time hubby is done.....Ensign will be gone. Someone evidently got a muzzle on Sanford...but he's toast too. And now Sarah's gone...with the Alaskan wind. Good riddance, don't let the door hit that cougar ass on the way out.

We must have smarter, less corrupt people in public office. Obama can't do it all himself. Without a clean CIA....we're doomed. We've got to quit confusing adult business with silly TV shows. It don't matter whose cute in a red dress, or who has finely combed silver hair or whose wearing a Team Huck shirt. We need people of substance running our government. Ernie's right to pity Sarah Palin, but that doesn't mean she's being treated unfairly or that we need her or her type running the government of anything. If she's not corrupt, she's racing with Warren G. Harding for worlds dumbest politician along side George W. Bush. No wonder the few people not trying to bomb us are laughing at us.....America has never looked sillier.

kizzy....at sourcewatch.org, this is what they had to say about the Foundation for a Secure and Prosperous America:

The Foundation for a Secure and Prosperous America (FSPA) is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit corporation that "operates independently" from the 2008 presidential campaign of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), "but was set up and financed by his supporters seeking to help him as much as possible up to the limits of the law," Jim Rutenberg and David D. Kirkpatrick wrote November 12, 2007, in the New York Times.[1]

This is what the current Foundation for a Secure and Prosperous America website has to say about the organization's activities:

The Foundation for a Secure and Prosperous America (FSPA) is a non-profit 501(c)(4) corporation dedicated to informing the public and opinion leaders as to how we can best assure that America remains secure and prosperous. It is focused on ways to reach consensus about fighting terrorism abroad and thereby securing our homeland. It will also address the need to reach agreement on controlling federal spending. Perhaps most importantly, it will identify those leaders and those ideas that can best solve these paramount issues of our time.

Yet nowhere on the new website can you find information about affilliation or a list of the Foundation organizers. Also interesting is the "news" posted on the website...some of which dates back to 2005, well before the Foundation was founded, and of course, the "news" is anti-democrat.

I thought that the Republican mantra was that private business can do anything better than government. I would think that they would want to show that private insurance would be better than a government run program but they don't want the light to shine on the fact that they remove 25% of the money given to them as part of the "healthcare system" and that we get nothing back in terms of improved outcomes.

The insurance industry is behind all of these ad campaigns. You can run a lot of commercials on $1.3 million a day.

Palin is getting the Hillary treatment. Demonization via the media, with personas created that have little or nothing to do with the actual person.

I'm not one to defend Republicans, but I will say that anyone who can get themselves elected governor has something on the ball. I respect that. I don't think I could get elected governor, and doubt few of the bloggers here could either.

I may not agree with her politics, but until I've walked a mile in her shoes I'm not going to criticize the person. A working mother of 4 who attended 4 or 5 colleges to finally get a degree and then climbs right up the political ladder personifies the American Dream every much as the Obamas and their Harvard Law Degrees.
