Betsey Wright charged in prison case
Betsey Wright, chief of staff under Gov. Bill Clinton and a long-time familiar figure in state and national politics, has been charged with 51 felony counts of attempting to take contraband items into the Varner Unit of the prison system, which houses Death Row.
Prosecuting Attorney Steve Dalrymple of Pine Bluff said Wright was charged wtih attempting to take in an ink pen with tweezers and a needle inside; a Swiss Army-style pocketknife of undetermined size; a "blue box cutter with razor" of undetermined size, and 48 "tattoo needles." In a phone interview, Dalrymple had referred to these as "tattoo syringes," but the information faxed to me later indicated they were needles.
Wright, 66, declined to comment, though she'd told me weeks ago when we first mentioned a case of potential contraband on Death Row in our Insider column that she was the target of the prison investigation and she said the charge was unfounded.
Her attorney, Jeff Rosenzweig, said: "We're disappointed that the prosecutor has chosen to file charges. Betsey Wright is innocent. She has been a vehement supporter of prisoners' rights and often an irritant to prison administration. It's our feeling that they have decided to take a willfully negative interpretation of some ambiguous circumstances. We intend to fight the charges."
Dalrymple wouldn't speculate on the intended use of the items, whether mostly for tattoos or other purposes.
The items were found when Wright was going through the security clearance process for a visit to the unit on May 22. She did not enter a prison unit with them. The needles were found in a Doritos bag that Wright said she'd found lying in a vending machine. She thought she'd found a free snack to take to an inmat.
The filing of charges raises, for one, questions of how often the Correction Department pursues felony charges on contraband, particularly items discovered before entry. I was unable to reach a prison spokesman after office hours.
Dalrymple told me an interview last week that contraband is a routine occurrence in the prison -- from drugs, tobacco and alcohol to cell phones. Regular prison visitors tell me that they often see people found in possession of prohibited items who are allowed to take them back to their cars before entry. Wright was immediately subjected to questioning on the items. I couldn't get a description from Dalrymple of the knife and box cutter, but hope to be able to obtain photos eventually.
Here's the full detail of the state's case, released after a district judge ruled there was probable cause to issue an arrest warrant. Dalrymple and Rosenzweig had previously reached an agreement for Wright to surrender on the charges next week in Lincoln County and to post a $1,500 bond. Rosenzweig is in Jonesboro this week as part of the defense team seeking to win freedom of the West Memphis Three.
The Wright charges come amid a string of embarrassing prison incidents, from escapes to the fatal shooting of a man attempting to drive away from the unit after a guard discovered he was wanted for failing to make a visit to a parole office. There was also an incident in which a prisoner was left nearly to die in feces by guards. A criminal investigation of the shooting case remains underway in Dalrymple's office.
Rosenzweig's description of prison officials' view of Wright as an "irritant" is mild. They have been deeply stung by press and legislative criticism and have long resented Wright's outspoken advocacy. Some are holdover employhees from the days when the Clinton administration fought to reform a prison system riddled with corruption. They are accustomed to running the prisons as a no-questions-asked fiefdom and Wright was not shy about criticizing the small ways in which prison officials can add misery to lives of prisoners by such things as withholding mail or other small privileges.
In the end, pressing charges against Wright might bring more sunshine to a dark world in need of it, even if she was fairly charged.
Wright's devotion to Death Row cases -- obsession many would call it -- has caused even some ideological soulmates to distance themselves from Wright at times. She's spent a sizable portion of her modest means in making regular visits to the prison from her home in Northwest Arkansas.
The charges, specifically, are three class C felonies for attempting to furnish prohibited articles into a correctional facility (the pen with tweezers, knife and box cutter), and 48 class d felonies, the needles.

What in the world! Everyone knows that tatoo stuff is much more dangerous than drugs inside a prison.
With the ADC's recent publicity they better watch who they pick on.
Betsey is in good hands with Jeff Rosenzweig. It was a pleasure watching that brilliant young fellow grow up.

"Betsey Wright . . . has been a vehement supporter of prisoners' rights and often an irritant to prison administration."
Well, there you have it: An irritant to the administration. Add to THAT the heat the administration has been getting for prison breaks, the near death of an inmate and other misdoings, and you've got the perfect storm developing for the likes of Betsey Wright. Given all the circumstances, I'd have thought she was way too smart to allow herself to get sucked into something like this.

What a crock! Betsy was my boss for several years eons ago and you can be assured she is not dumb....she is one of the smartest people I've ever met.
Sounds kinda like it's payback time from the prison honchos. After all the crap that goes on down there and mostly of late this sounds like it's a little diversion to get the public attention on something high profile and away from their screw-ups.

This is typical of the ADC... anyone who questions them will find themselves 'set-up' eventually. Betsey, you hang in there. No doubt, this is bogus from the get go!
Good question about contraband and charges... Of course the ADC has nothing to loose, they use our AG to defend them and they always can come up with something.
Most telling is Tyler, has yet to comment!

And Dustin CamelHump McDaniel got to use the ADC airplane, for free until the media made a stink of it.

For the sake of us newcomers, would someone be willing to explain the reference to Knox Nelson?

Precisely, Charles Eddie. And that's why I'm having a helluva time figuring how she could have allowed herself to fall into a trap like this. It's a set-up, not too unlike the Susan McDougal shitstorm.

Wasn't there something about another person arrested with a prohibited item or items said to be in a bag of chips she got at the prison? Or was this Betsey?
As far as the other stuff, I carry a pair of tweezers in my purse, as well as a nail file, not that I can find either when I really need them. No box cutter, but I do carry a small knife to get the seal off hubby's oxygen bottles. We won't even go into the variety of drugs I sometimes carry for him.
I have also hand carried a friend's Swiss Army knives home from Texas after she flew down and met us out in the wilds. She'd mistakenly carried them aboard a plane but wasn't caught with them.
Of course there's a difference between inadvertently carrying something prohibited and having tattoo needles, if that's really what they were.
In any case, I don't know Betsey personally, but I kinda have to agree with Charles Eddie. I figure she's a whole lot smarter than to knowingly and intentionally try to smuggle that stuff into prison.
I know I say this about a lot of things, but somethin's fishy.

You have to understand that the difference between the inmates and the administrators and guards is a very small one. Good luck, Betsey.

eLwood, I know you dont like the attorney general (gee - how did I figure that out?) -- but his office's consumer protection division has saved me a bunch of money in an internet ripoff this summer.

Is there not security video of her vending machine purchase? If her story is indeed that she got the chips out of the vending machine, seems like that could be easily confirmed or debunked with the video.
We're surrounded by video cameras on streetlights out here where all the innocent people live, surely they're in the prison visitor areas.

She must have been aware of the x-ray machine from previous visits, so it's hard to imagine that she would not realize that an x-ray machine can see into a bag of potato chips.
According to the documents, she more or less confessed to stealing the bag of chips, so maybe they can reduce the charges to one count of petty larceny.

Yes tina. That's part of what he is paid to do. I doubt he can do much for Arkies while riding camels in Egypt and taking his SECOND honeymoon.

This is just smoke & fog to cover the fact that bad things go on in Arkansas prisons. When I read the headline I thought they had traced the well planned prison escape back to Betsey. Now that would be some real news! Instead she's guilty of helping produce more prison tattoos. Though I think they're horrible, I hardly think it's a felony.
We got Bush & Cheney & Rove and a hundred thousand dead innocent people, but they've arrested Betsey Wright? What the FK is wrong with American priorities these days? What's wrong with government? I'm going to found the I Give Up movement and start digging my cave down by the river. Osama won....that's all there is to it......and ain't it a bitch that no one has managed to arrest Osama? These charges are bullshit....

The guard who had sex with the Varner inmate should have been charged under the prison rape elimination act. Arkansas also has a law about "people in power" and sex with inmates. Why isn't anyone asking the ADC about that?

Yes, but they were using the North Little Rock model, camera only, doesn't record.

I grew up with Betsey Wright in Alpine, Texas; her Brother Ben was in my class; she was a couple of years older; her father, Dr Wright delivered me. Ben and I still correspond from time to time 45 years after our graduation. All the kids from our small town shared many values of decency and goodness. Just tell her Margaret said hello.
One thing I can say with certainity is that Betsey is intelligent and would not engage in stupid activity such as smuggling items into a prison........... unless she has completely lost her mind....... which I also doubt. My support for her is unwavering.
