Free clinic: From the floor

Lobby of Convention Center. Photo by Brian Chilson.

Just a half hour after the noon opening of the C.A.R.E. free clinic at the Statehouse Convention Center, 200 patients have signed in and more are lined up outside the door. Entering patients are being greeted with loud cheers and applause from a sea of red-shirted volunteers; these folks, sign-in people, escorts, technicians, nurses, doctors, are making things go smoothly. At the sign in tables: Lt. Gov. Bill Halter and his wife, Shanti. Video and photographs momentarily.

Matthew Carey of Grapevine has his blood pressure taken.

Blanche Lincoln is about to speak before the Senate on C-Span 2

Blanche says she'll vote YES to open debate on health care reform!!!!

That's very christianly of her...

She's visibly under a great deal of pressure, and she's not delivering a great speech.

What does the blue jacket with the red scarf tell us?

I'm sure the majority of the people at the free clinic are poor, but I wonder how many have I-phones and luxury cars?

"I'm sure the majority of the people at the free clinic are poor, but I wonder how many have I-phones and luxury cars?"

Oh it is probably over run with them "welfare queens" Regan warned us about....

I wonder how many folks there have jobs and insurance but still cannot afford to see a Doctor because they cannot an office visit because their deductible is so high?

I bet they have clothes, too! And they've probably eaten food at some point, more than likely in a house or an apartment! Can you imagine, these so called "poor" complaining about how they can't afford to see a doctor but somehow manage to scrounge up enough money for those luxuries? Oh sure, they've got money to spend on food, clothing and shelter but they can't find the money to pad the fat wallets of insurance company execs...er, I mean pay for healthcare.

Poor people are stupid.

There aren't that many public occasions that evoke my reaction at seeing this: pride, hope, sadness.

State funerals. Some Inaugurations. Some protests.

It's sad that lobbyist-bought government has so miserably failed our citizens by extorting Americans for so long -- over something as fundamental and essential as health care.

To see fellow citizens and families, hard-working, honest, lined up at free clinics here and elsewhere (ALL Democrat-supported / Republican-derided) because they're denied rights to health care: can't pay exorbitant rates to a legal crime syndicate -- the health insurance syndicate; is heartbreaking.

Worse, it's been ongoing and growing for decades.

Is there ANOTHER area of social policy than Health Care that reveals how far America's Fatal Flaw is revealed? The Bottom Line -- for me, you, family, friends and neighbors, our Representatives, our government -- trumps EVERYTHING!

Including human lives.

Other First World countries manage health-care beautifully, affordably and equitably. Why not America?

Something's DEEPLY wrong with America. Like a hidden malignant tumor they only discover far inside you after it's already metastasized to the body politic's primary organs and it's too late and the Chief of Staff counsels faith in the status-quo.

When the Bottom Line trumps which Americans live and die according to ability to pay (which is to say Wealth and Class and, often, Race), something's DEEPLY wrong with this country.

Finally, something's DEEPLY wrong with elected politicians who're paid to feed the tumor rather than seeking cures.

It's like dinner-gone-wrong at Graffiti's.

Only REAL serious, Razorbabies.

There's a crap load of welfare queens out there, the stimulus added thousand more to the welfare rolls. There are more common law marriages out there where the couple was never married, but at least one of them makes over $65k a year so the other can collect Govt benefits. I know of at least 2 Beebe appointees in the state Government who do this.

There is a easy way to fix health care in this company. Tell the companies doing business here that they can't refuse service and can only raise premiums by the cost of inflation. They'll still make money b/c they'll cut overhead till they are profitable.

wordonthestreet says,

"There are more common law marriages out there where the couple was never married, but at least one of them makes over $65k a year so the other can collect Govt benefits. I know of at least 2 Beebe appointees in the state Government who do this."

Really? Name them.

By the way, I'd be interested in seeing you prove your first statement, too: "The stimulus added thousands more to the welfare rolls". Let's leave aside the fact that President Dino Clenis destroyed welfare, and change that to "added thousands more to the unemployment rolls". Can you disprove this alternative and contradictory statement "The stimulus kept thousands more off the unemployment rolls"? That's a lot more consistent with my understanding of the economic situation.

There are a "Repuglican load" of pitiable people out there.

Every time I believe they can't stoop any lower, show less compassion, less humanity, more apathy and indifference, or move any closer to the insertion point for the Universe's next enema, one of them steps up and proves me wrong.

Congrats, Word, you're well out in front.

Dot I am actually on a DPA committee. Somebody has to keep you guy's from giving away the store. Someone who can add and manage money has to be in charge.

JohnA, you can figure them out just like i did. I'm not going to name them on the website and fight a frivolous slander suit. However, I can tell you that the DPA followed up on it in 2007 or 2008 as part of a CYA program.

It's hard to prove what the stimulus did, however language in it did lower the thresholds for welfare. The CBO had a report on the estimates of how many they would add. If i get time to read the old reports, I'll post it on here for you. However, the unemployment roll becomes before the welfare roll. However, something that I found out is that when the Government increased the GI Bill amount, they include the welfare you can recieve if you are out of the Armed Services and are going full time to school.

Hey! Hey! Lay off word. We need him to tell us how WE can be welfare queens -- 'cause right now I'd jump at the opportunity. The $65,000 would go a long way toward paying my insurance premiums, premiums I keep paying even though I figure if I get really, really sick, BCBS will find out I lied to 'em. I had chicken pox when I was seven. Probably disqualify me in a hot second.

Whoopee! "DPA Committee" sounds impressive. Let's see . . . Divine Performing Arts, Down Payment Assistance, Drug Policy Alliance, Dell Preferred Account, Darfur Peace Agreement, Department of Political Affairs, Defence Procurement Agency, Deferred Prosecution Agreement, Distributed-Power Architecture, Department of Public Aid, Destructive Physical Analysis, Distributed Password Authentication, Dubai Ports Authority, Data Protection Agency, Doctor of Public Administration, Delegation of Procurement Authority, Development Permit Area, Demand Protocol Architecture, Department of Public Administration . . . Committee. A couple of those sounded something like assisting people in need, of course those agencies weren't from Arkansas, just Illinois and Indiana, etc.

Then "CYA Program." Now I remember that one from serving in the military it meant "Cover Your A**," but it was a program it was a procedure for LIFER's. ( I Won't even push the bounds of propriety to explain that acronym), ifigured every on would let me allude to the last half of LargeA**'s handle. So researching over CYA's - See You (that one's fun), College Year in Athens Program, California Youth Authority, Carclew Youth Arts, Canadian Yachting Association, Cover Your Assets, Cover Your Answer(s), Call Your Attorney, Christian Youth Authority . . .

I reiterate ". . . Every time I believe they can't stoop any lower, show less compassion, less humanity, more apathy and indifference, or move any closer to the insertion point for the Universe's next enema, one of them steps up and proves me wrong. . . "

Congrats, Word, you didn't change your standing, IMO (just to make you feel comfortable), but I'm sure George the Elder can find a POL ("Points of Light" certificate) somewhere for you inrecognition of your outstanding humanitarian contributions.
