Friends of The Family

The Family, a secretive fundamentalist group with tentacles deep in Congress, has gotten plenty of attention recently --  when its members stray (Ensign, Sanford); when its friends try to restrict abortion rights (Stupak), or when they try to make homosexuality a crime punishable by death in Uganda.

We've written before, too, about Jeff Sharlet, who's written a book about the group and who's raised the ire of Sen. Mark Pryor's staff by noting some of Pryor's statements on religion and association with Family events, such as the national prayer breakfast. They disavow Pryor is a "member" of the group.

A reader calls my attention to Sharlet's appearance on NPR with Terry Gross last week. He undoubtedly put Pryor people's teeth on edge again with this about The Family, from the transcript of Gross' show:

They survived for 70 years by not locking themselves in with any one faction. So you see Democrats like Representative Mike McIntyre, a very conservative Democrat from North Carolina; Representative Heath Shuler, also from North Carolina; Representative Bart Stupak; Senator Mark Pryor, who is pro-war, anti-labor, anti-gay and a creationist, but he is a Democrat. And he's a guy who explained to me a couple years ago that through The Family, he had learned that the meaning of bipartisanship was that, quote, Jesus didn't come to take sides; he came to take over.

Lil MarkyMark may not need to worry about 2010 or even 2012, but I'll never forget him.

Notably omitted from The Family associates, Hillary.

Al Lewis said it a long time ago: "America gets the politicians they deserve. That's it. And you keep struggling."

Some mornings, the struggle is harder to keep.

few important things to add to the quick list of Mark Pryors egregious positions.

Anti choice
Anti liberty
Pro unfettered government surveillance
Pro torture
Pro needless and endless war
Pro rich.. (exclusively)

I don't think it's Jesus who Mark has in mind for a takeover.

I posted this Tuesday - Fresh Air podcast link at my blue name:

>>"America gets the politicians they deserve

No dear. America gets the best politicians that special interests can buy.

Seems The Family's founder, Dr. Abraham (Abram) Vereide, had deep roots with Democrats all along:

Vereide was born in Norway in 1886. After immigrating the United States in 1905, he spent nine years as superintendent of the Good Will Industries in Seattle, Washington.[4] In 1931, Vereide was invited to Boston to be associate general superintendent of the Good Will Industries of America, as well as pastor of the English Department of the Church of All Nations, and executive secretary for Good Will Industries for New England, positions he held till 1934.

New York Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt invited Vereide to a conference concerning a social relief program for that state. "He wanted me to take charge of a state program," wrote Abram, "and apply this principle of the Good Will Industries in the expenditure of a fund of eighteen million dollars for the state. This I didn't do, as the religious phases could not be included; but he also emphasized that what the state needed more than anything else was a spiritual upsurge. Vereide called James Farrell, president of the United States Steel Corporation, and arranged for a few men to discuss the needs of the state.

Carl Vrooman, Secretary of the Department of Agriculture under President Woodrow Wilson, gave Vereide a special appointment after Franklin Roosevelt was nominated for President. Vrooman had been tasked by Roosevelt with forming a super-cabinet as the advisory body for his administration in the national policy and program. Vrooman had found that he and Vereide shared a mutual concern to save America from the political and economic breakdown that then existed. He asked Vereide to head the Social Service portfolio. In that capacity, Abram was introduced to the inner workings of the economic and political forces of the nation.

The most basic concept that the majority of the people on this blog don't understand is that these Arkansas politicians know that if they want to get reelected they have to some degree reflect the wishes of the voters. Arkansans are conservative. They do not embrace the values of the hillcrest crowd. You are always 'shocked, shocked' that these politicans don't embrace pacifism, big government that can do no wrong and social liberalism. HELLO, these are NOT the values of the vast majority of the Arkansas people. The rest of this state are not surprised but only you hillcrest crowd are incredulous at their positions.

No reguard for the GOPers who have consistently for decades led our government spending through the roof.. while whittling away at the working folks, all our liberty, and spending trillions on banksters and MIC war criminals, while using millions as pawns in needless war.

Dems are far to often a part of that recipe, but the GOpers have the least leg to stand on when it comes to the complaint department.

And there is nothing conservative about the values no regard claims to champion... because "conservatives" these days are the very opposite of conservative in every sense of the word..

What -- Mark Pryor and Hillary Clinton support the death penalty for gays? Oh, go back to sleep, silly. It's only in Uganda and only through their affiliation with The Family.

I agree with you that Bush and the Congress supported deficit spending. However, that included democrats in that group. However, I am old enough to remember the days of Lyndon Johnson when spending on the Great Society went through the roof. However, even LBJ was a piker compared to barry and the congress. We are looking a deficit spending of $1 trillion a year resulting in a $24 TRILLION debt up from $12 TRILLION dollars today. The service on the debt alone will equal $700 trillion. No President or Congress has EVER brought us anywhere near that level of debt. I hope you have no children or grandchildren because they will curse your name for allowing this kind of irresponsibility to happen.

Jesus H. Christ -- does it EVER stop? Sarah Palin's being flown around in a private Beechcraft King Air 300, owned by "Samaritan's Purse" -- Franklin Graham's (Billy's son) "International Christian relief and evangelism organization that provides spiritual and physical aid to victims of war, poverty, natural disaster, and disease."

Except when it's actually flying politicians around in its comfy private aircraft and stuff.

Sarah's plane lands "near" her next book signing, she then gets on her bus and rides into town like she's been on the bus all along.

I've nothing against Divas, god knows. Or even lip-synching when your intricately staged choreography proves breathlessly strenuous.

But Lip-Synching Divas for Christ?

Why do these Christian religionists keep trying to HIDE what they're doing in and to American politics?

Since they and the "majority" of Americans profess Christian religionism, can't they just openly take over America at the polls?

What's that you say? They already ARE taking over at the polls?

What's that? 31 states have so far been persuaded to declare 35 million Americans "un-Christian" and therefore ineligible for equal rights under the Constitution?

How's that again? The Family and similar Christianist orgs are determined to make theirs America's state religion?

Oh wait. That's unconstitutional. That's theocratic fascism.

No wonder they're in stealth mode.

Rounding up and exterminating Jews is so 1930s Catholic Germany.

Voting to deny 35 million same-sex Americans equal rights based solely on religious grounds is so contemporary!

Of course, actual state-sanctioned KILLING of Jews . . . uh, sorry: state-sanctioned killing of homosexuals . . . is best begun out of sight, to start with. Say in Uganda. Far, far away. Where nobody will notice the connections between "their" anti-gay death penalty and The Family's "outreach program."

Hill, honey, you know I love you and we've always gotten along, though you've been so busy so long that we've not stayed as close as formerly. Have you considered outspokenly disavowing your previous support for these theocrats?

Listen to Norma: It's WAY past time you resumed your seances with Eleanor Roosevelt.

It included every Republican in lock-step.

So let us all know what you are doing to clean up your party.

And deficit spending is not always bad... but it is when Gopers (or a few bad dems) do it for the sole benefit of the criminal rich.... meaning no return.

>>We are looking a deficit spending of $1 trillion a year resulting in a $24 TRILLION debt up from $12 TRILLION dollars today.<<

That's assuming taxes don't return to what they were during Reagan's tenure.

I thought that the modern version of the final solution was called----choice. Abortion has extinguished the life of more human beings than hitler or stalin ever dreamed of.

It looks like the next reiteration of the 'final solution' will be Westerners and Jews. The jihadists have already started beheading Westerners and Jews so who do you think is next on their agenda? It won't be long before they have nuclear bombs and I don't think anyone is lacking in imagination to figure who those little darlings are being developed for.

Reagan and Bush aren't President. barry is prez and the democrats run congress. They are responsible and will be held accountable by the voters.

Well, it sure is nice to see bore-regards THINK someone is responsible, just so long as it's not Reagan,
Bush I and Bush II.

I think the biggest issue I have with "The family" is their position that most of humanity for 2000 years have mis-interpreted the Bible and Jesus really didn't care for the poor and suffering but really cared only about the rich and powerful and the need for getting more rich and more powerful.

They have even paid to get their own version of new bible (no caps intended) to support their position. Where is that guy who felt that the only true Bible was the King James version and was burning all the rest? And where are the true Bible scholars who should be denouncing this garbage?

Why don't we make teddy roosevelt responsible. After all, he was a republican. Any takers?

Damn cults have taken over America. From Tony Alamo to the C Street family to the twisted cult called the Republican Party. We need a new broom that will sweep clean around here.
