GOP brothers at war

Frank Rich has a pretty good summary of the fratricidal GOP battle for an upstate New York congressional seat. Already, a solid Republican has been driven out of the race by  a torrent of attacks from the Club for Growth/Beck/Palin conservative candidate.

I should add that the conservative is the chosen candidate of Jackson T. Stephens Jr. of Little Rock, a Club for Growth moneybags. Stephens may buy himself a seat in upstate New York. If he does, it won't be of much help to locals, not that Jacko cares. The candidate is a carpetbagger who doesn't live in the district and knows next to nothing about it. But he's solid on the starve-government orthodoxy of his patrons. Of course he's a hypocrite -- a recipient of government largesse himself and seeking to service a district that would die without a huge Army base.

The other angle is that heavy Republican hitter Mike Huckabee is staying out of this one, mostly likely because he's still simmering over the pounding the Club for Growth gave him in 2008. His words of late have been philosophically in tune with them, however.

The other interesting Arkansas angle is whether it could happen here. Will the true believers  beat up on the slightly more pragmatic types in the big Republican primary for U.S. Senate from Arkansas? They don't get much worse politically than Sen. Gilbert Baker, but his opponents are trying to paint him as a big-spending, big government type.  He somehow manages to seem sort of moderate, though that's a trick of personality not philosophy. The irony there is that one of his chief detractors is Benton County Judge Dave Bisbee, who's still nursing a grudge over Baker's participation in the coalition that cost Bisbee leadership of the Senate. Bisbee, had he won the Senate post, would have owed it to a solid bloc of liberal Democrats with whom he often saw eye to eye.

And that's my contribution to blogging today. It was a splendid morning for tromping through Pompeii. More pizza tonight. But for the foodies: Best I could do so far today was a panini from my favorite fast food chain in the world, Autogrill (wonder how this familiar freeway operator landed a concession inside Pompeii near the top of the ancient Via Dell' Abbondanza). Foccacia stuffed with prosciutto, arugula and cheese, then pressed in a grill, was my pick.

"It was a splendid morning for tromping through Pompeii."

During that tromp, I'm sure you toured the brothels and took note that ancient Pompeii was into porn up to the ears. Some day you'll have to tell us what the dear sweet sainted Judge Ellen thought of all that!

Club for growth... I guess "club for rich tumors" would have been a little too on the nose.

I really don't understand why that story is getting so much attention.. it's been a Republican seat for 140 years. No matter who wins (even the pathetic excuse for a Dem candidate) we all lose.

Sound familiar?

La Dolce Vita, Max!

Oooooh Autogrill! Hate to be drooling over a roadside fast food joint, but it's not like any other fast food joint we have over here. Mmmmmm Autogrill.

"The candidate is a carpetbagger who doesn't live in the district and knows next to nothing about it."
THAT is what amazes me. And legally, how can you be elected from a district when you don't live there?
The carpetbagging conservative -- the rightest of the right wing, apparently -- couldn't even be bothered to look over the local morning paper before he was interviewed by its editorial board. Made a total ass of himself, yet it seems he snagged about a third of the potential vote before the local Republican bowed out, pleading financial inability to continue.
How can local voters be so swayed by a candidate's out of state support to the detriment to their local interests?
In light of that equation, I guess Rush Limbaugh could own the Fourth District that I see and hear everyday. Heck, he could probably own Arkansas.
If anyone needs me, I'll be curled up on the floor in the corner, sucking my thumb.

I love your characterization of the 'solid republican candidate' whatever her name. She has dropped out because she hasn't a chance against a real solid conservative. I guess if you are a hard core leftist she would be desirable from your standpoint, max. However, obvious liberals who mask themselves in republican labels are going to be defeated by people who are sick and tired of betrayal and large irresponsible government.

>>However, obvious liberals who mask themselves in republican labels are going to be defeated by people who are sick and tired of betrayal and large irresponsible government.<<

But not NeoLiberals like Cheney and Bush who brought us TARP and the GM bailout.

If only 17% of the voters are identifying themselves with the Republican Cult, why does Obama or anyone else bother to mess with them? I could still manage to eat with 17% of my income missing. I could live quite nicely with 17% of my body parts missing. Why is American held hostage by 17% of the population with the intelligence level of our friend, beauragard?

It's like having the janitor running the school. It's like thinking with your toes. It's stupid. As is this goofy war going on in NY's 23rd district. Let us not forget our long lost friend Robbyn T. who caught a Hutchinson running for the state legislature from a district he didn't live in...we're no better than Yankees at times. And we're all in trouble any time someone from the R Cult or the Club for Growth pretends they're looking out for our interests.

Dede Scozzafava taking a Sarah Palin leaves the race to a Democrat and an uninformed non-resident who looks like an alien....wooo those salamander eyes scare the stuffing out of me! So even in a part of NY long poisoned by the Cult, I doubt the voters will pick lizard-boy over a fairly harmless Democrat. There will be no threat from the Cult in the 2010 elections....look what's happened to them since just last January.

By November, 2010, the Republican Cult will be so unpopular the few remaining members will revert back to calling themselves what they really are....John Birch Society members. So be of good cheer! The birthing pains of change are on us, but in a little while Obama will lead us to a new day of prosperity and peace. Ignore the Cult.....and have a nice day!

I'm still howling from Rich's best line of the entire year:

""To the uninitiated, the tea party crowd comes across like the barflies in "Star Wars."

.

"But not NeoLiberals like Cheney and Bush who brought us TARP and the GM bailout."

Hey, hotshot, your fearless leader voted for it. What is your excuse now? Also, bush and cheney aren't in office anymore your fearless leader is.

Inches---after November of 2010 it will be interesting to see your 'spin' on all of this. Conservative and Republican are two separate entities. They are not to be confused. Deb 'whatever her name' bears NO resemblance to a conservative. I'm not sure why she isn't a democrat since there isn't a dimes worth of difference between her views and that party.

I have so much work left to do......... but this here new time change has me all confused, and the dogs feel like NOW would be a good time for a long walk, as would've been five minutes ago. Or ten minutes ago. work is boring even to a dog. these are just observer dogs. The Yorkie was observing by lying on her back snoring with all four legs thrown up in the air.

Something tells me an Italian Autogrill is not the same as a Geo Foreman Grill. ;) Max, you are a rat, but you and the Mrs. deserve a vacation.

The current batch of conservatives are so far over the edge to the right that the middle seems left to wingnuts like no-regard. There are fews liberals around although the neo-bnuts will continue to call anyone who isn't to the right of Hitler or Stalin one. It would be nice if the Repubklicans would put their allegiance to the country before their oath to the party but it appears that is asking too much although they seems to be ready to go to war with anyone (but somehow aren't able to enlist themselves).

But if they continue, 17% may end up being their high mark for 2010.

I think it was two weeks ago when 60 Minutes showed the young man from Atkins, name of Duvall, on a respirator at Children's but expected to get better. I could've missed a lot, because mostly I don't watch the news, but has anyone heard how he's doing? much better, I hope. I know of only two local teens who have been hospitalized with much milder cases of the H1N1 flu. And, sadly, the 12-y/o from Cedarville who died with pneumonia + H1N1 flu. Her mother was also seriously ill with superimposed pneumonia & H1N1.

the trouble wtih kids is that you just can't keep them confined to home forever. One of you will go crazy, and it probably won't be the one of you who is old enough to vote.

Totally useless fact of the day: Autogrill is the parent company of Host, the owner of the Little Rock Airport Concessions, and many other airport concessions around the world.

tina, the boy's name is Luke Duvall. The last newspaper report I saw was the middle of last week: He was off the ventilator and able to walk a very short distance. Still at Arkansas Children's Hospital, still very sick, but expected to make a full recovery.

oopsie, I meant to say it probably WILL be the one of you who is old enough to vote. No kids to blame it on but I've been at this computer for a long time today. And I didnt have much brainpower left over when I started.

Im on the high-risk list of old people (over 21 that is to say) who should get the H1N1 vaccine, but I dont know........I just worry about it not being on the market so for very long and I havent had allergy testing done in about 15 years. so much debate about it still, and I rarely go out anyway.

so who's definitely sure they will get the H1N1 flu vaccine? My son who goes to UAF and works in the food bidness said yes, he probably should get it. But first he wants me to find HIS allergy testing from 15 years ago, which wouldnt be of much use now anyway, as far as I can tell. He's not allergic to eggs, but with this one I dont know if that matters.

I know I should but Im just afraid. One of my friends said her doctor told her that, even if the vaccine makes her sick, she wont be nearly as sick from the vaccine as she would if she got the disease.

Jazzy, what about you and Frenchie?

"The candidate is a carpetbagger who doesn't live in the district and knows next to nothing about it."

Oh yeah, like that has never happened in New York before! Can you say Kennedy? Clinton? I'm a native New Yorker, so don't pull that carpetbagger BS on me.

Doc....being a carpetbagger is the least of bug-eyes problems, ignorant and ill-prepared, plus some kind of Stalin conservatism makes him the terror of upstate New York. Look at the man.......and tell you you'd want him representing you.

But all this is just media smoke & mirrors to pretend the Republican Cult is still a viable political party. They should all quit like Sarah Palin & Dede Scozzafava and then "work" outside the system....like Bush the Motivational Speak....ha ha ha.

PS Dede Scozzafava has just endorsed her Democratic opponent Bill Owens! Let's have another round of ha ha ha ha ha!

DBI, Dede Scozzafava just proved that there is hope for America. She may be a Rupublican, but she has some common sense - what a welcome change.
I can't wait to buy the anti-Palin book, "Going Rouge."
I've had a great weekend with family and Halloween, a lazy day today. The time change has me messed up in the head, and I am ready to go to bed, but the World Series has me hooked.
Tina, I don't know how you put in so many hours at work. What the heck do you do, anyway?
Have a great night and week, all.
Kiz
