Mormons back some equal rights
This is big news, given the Mormon Church's past and continued vigor in working to defeat same-sex marriage. In Salt Lake City, it endorsed a local ordinance banning discrimination against gays in employment and housing.
In its statement backing the ordinance, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said that while it remained “unequivocally committed to defending the bedrock foundation of marriage between a man and a woman,” the question of how people were treated on the job and in finding places to live were matters of fairness that did not have anything to do with marriage.
“Across America and around the world, diverse communities such as ours are wrestling with complex social and moral questions,” Michael R. Otterson, a church spokesman, said in a statement to the City Council. “The issues before you tonight are the right of people to have a roof over their heads and the right to work without being discriminated against.”

While this is stunning news. It should be said the Mormons were also strong backers of the Stupak amendment last week.

>>bedrock foundation of marriage between a man and a woman,<<
Oops. This leaves the true believers exposed. Maybe it should have said
'between a man and women.'
Again, Norma nailed it a while back saying that it's so ridiculous having Mormons lecturing anyone about marriage.

So gays are sort of but not really equal in Salt Lake City. Wonderful. Like blacks used to be sort of but not really equal?
Yes, eLwood, your memory serves you well. Though, personally, I eschew the use of "nail," "nailed," or "nailing" in any Christian context.
Oh, wait. Mormons aren't really Christians. Neither are Catholics. Like gays aren't really equal human beings. Like blacks used to be.
I guess you're right, eLwood, I did indeed nail it.
Meanwhile, we can all enjoy once more South Park's infamous "All About the Mormons" episode at clicky. Talk about NAILING it!
"Dumb-dumb-dumb-dumb-dumb."

There seems to be an ulterior motive at play. Perhaps the Mormons want to be perceived as taking the high road on this particular issue in an effort to lessen the blow about some upcoming bad press.
There's already some buzz about an upcoming documentary titled "8: The Mormon Proposition.''
Do the clicky and then press trailer for details.

You may have a point, sistertoldia. I saw something on some show (perhaps The Daily Show) where some guys that were a couple were harrassed by Mormons in Salt Lake City for one having his arm around the other and giving him a peck on the cheek. They were manhandled by a group of Mormon men, then the men claimed it was because they didn't allow any public displays of affection, it wasn't because the guys were gay.
So, the show had a male and female couple make out in the same area for quite some time to see if they got busted, but nothing happened. I mean, they were REALLY making out. She even had her hand on his inner thigh. No sign of those guys that manhandled the gay guys.
