Talking trash

Property owners in the River Market District are looking at paying up to $72,000  a year for trash pickup now that the city is no longer footing the bill.

Tim Heiple, a member of the district's property owners association, said Deputy City Manager Bryan Day suggested to the association that the city, the Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau (which now operates the River Market) and the Central Arkansas Library System would contribute $45,000. Or the district could go with the low bid of $30,000 for weekends only, to be paid entirely by private property owners.

Heiple said its unsure how many property owners want to participate -- they can't be forced to -- and  he said some object to a charge based on street frontage alone, rather than proximity to the market and restaurants. He said some owners propose to clean the streets in front of their businesses themselves.

The association may take up the various scenarios on paying for trash pickup on Friday.

Duh....take the trash to the bigass muddy river in your backyard every night! It ends up in the Gulf of Mexico and a hurricane blows it up on shore next fall and FEMA cleans it up!! End of problem. Next!

I must be missing something here..... Will the Central AR Library system, the city and others kick in to pay for the trash pickup on my private property? Someone please expalin.

Not to worry. The guys who looked to make a buck in the River Market District at LR taxpayer expense will swiftly find a way for SOME public entity to pick up that tab for the trash haul.

I'm sorry but I don't understand this at all. Why are we paying for their trash pick up to begin with? What about the city paying for the trash pickup in Riverdale, Hillcrest, The Heights, Chenal, etc. How did they get to be the golden child? This is infuriating. How do we get on this Gravy Train? I want to sign up.

In Europe EVERYONE cleans the street in front of their place!!! and ditto Luv2Eat....

Yes, the River Market 'success' was a sham, based on city subsidies. Now it is all about to come crashing down and go the way of the Main Street Mall. The connected will still get theirs of course.

Shameful little scam we are running here in the Banana Republic.
