Please Stand By [Season 1: Episode 3 - "Where have you been?"]

There's nothing wrong with your computer, you are actually reading this...

Well, my prediction was prophetic, a TV blog is hard to do when you're not paid to do it, but let's try to catch up on some things, shall we?  Good.

[WED/9CST/ABC]- still one of the best shows of all time, LOST has returned with a vengeance bringing back people who were kidnapped in season 1, revealing more of the island(s) and totally blowing everyone's mind while telling us in the second episode back from the hiatus that one of the major characters is going to die.... YES!  And we're back!  Hopefully J.J. Abrams and crew will remain focussed now that 6 Degrees is dead.  If you aren't watching LOST, well, I have no words for you.  Season 1 & 2 are on DVD, it would take a weekend to watch them.  You could download this season from iTunes or watch most of it at ABC.com... there's still time....or is there?

[TUE,WED,THU/7ISH/FOX] - No, I still do not believe we need three hours of AI a week, but I have been watching ever since I saw Lakisha wail out "You're Gonna Love Me".  That girl can sing, and she isn't the only one.  The guys had better start showing up because there are at least three women on there who could be selling cds right now.  AI is my guilty pleasure of the spring season, what of it?

[THU/7PM/ABC]- I love this show, it's hysterical and poignant, it's good television and a fresh concept.  Last week's episode with the [gay] nephew recounting the entire Broadway musical Hairspray on the subway was priceless, not to mention the many intermingling storylines and character arcs.  This show's a hit and should be around for at least 3 seasons, especially if it remains in league with...

[THU/8PM/ABC] (did you see that segway there? nice, right...you know it) Grey's Anatomy has completed the "disaster" mini-series with the death of Meredith's mother and Meredith's resurrection from "accidental" drowning which took us into a subconscious vision that featured cameos from past recurring characters including Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) as the bomb tech that exploded at the end of Season 1, which is still one of the best things I have seen on television in a long time, it was just like BOOM! Scared the crap out of me.  Also Denny and some chick that had a pipe through her torso were there and then she had some one on one time with her mom, yadda yadda yadda.  I thought the episode reached a little too far to the metaphysical, but it was good.  The rumor is there will be a spinoff with Addison Montgomery's character this spring and possible extension to next fall...we'll see...

[THU/9PM/ABC] - Again, I tried not to watch this show, but it gets better and better each week and there is something alluring and addictive about small town rumor mill driven shows that America loves.  There are some stars on the rise in this one too, don't be surprised if more than one of the supporting players ends up in some films quickly. There has also been a little backlash on some message boards that they have introduced a lot of new characters and none of them are native Alaskan, but predominantly white, etc.  I don't know if the producers even considered that aspect, but I'm sure continued chatter will see some upcoming role reflect better the racial diversity in Alaska.

[THU/7-9CST/NBC]- personally, for my money, NBC's Thursday night comedy line-up blows CBS's Monday night line-up out of the water, but that's just me, whatever.  Two and a half men is funny as is the new show following it, Rules of Engagement, but they're just not up to the challenge of NBC's four star hitters.  The Office is one of my favorite shows of all time and I put it up there on the same shelf as Seinfeld, Cheers and Friends, it's that good, there, gauntlet thrown! Padow, big babies!  30 Rock is a perfect storm and Tina Fey may be the funniest woman in showbiz and definitely on par with anyone, man or woman, out there right now.  That said, Alec Baldwin and Tracy Morgan are killing me, my sides hurt, stop it funny man!  Again, this show is chalked full of good people, I love it like lasagna!

[WED/7CST/NBC] - I would like to thank Belinda for commenting on her love of this show, that now makes two of us.  WHY ARE YOU PEOPLE NOT WATCHING THIS SHOW?  1) it's about football, high school football at that; 2) the show is hardly about actual football, but more about the lives of the people caught up in a game, played by children, who should be more worried about their education, but have to be worried about the enormous stakes put on a Friday night game; 3) the cast is superb, led by Kyle Chandler, [Yes, Belinda, I loved, did I mention loved, Homefront, which is in my top 50 television shows of all time.  I love the era, I love the stories, I loved the actors, I personally thought we could have had another Walton's on our hands... and if you look it up, most of that cast is still out there acting.  Great show, is it on DVD?  I love the theme song too, bug my parents for weeks to find it in their collection of old tunage.  Sorry, digression over, almost, 8 Men Out, also good.  And you were thinking of Early Edition, where he received the newspaper for the next day each morning and then went out and helped people to change the future.  Also ran an Irish Pub.  Ran forever in the 90's.]

Where was I.... yes, the cast!  Great, great, great.  This show only gets better and I think NBC is glad they kept it around.  Personally, I would like to see just a scoach more football in the show, but I'm still religiously recording it.

[MON/8CST/NBC] - THE HIT OF 2006-2007.  I don't know what rock you have been under if you aren't watching this show, but sweet Lord, is it good.  This week's episode introduced George Takei (Star Trek's Mr. Sulu) and Eric Roberts (Julia's big brother) as new characters, not to mention next week we find out who Mr. Linderman is, I had my suspicions on who the actor is... and I went and looked on IMDB to see if I could be right... and he's dead...as I now remember...I'm an idiot.... I believe HEROES still repeats on the SciFi channel on Fridays at 6.  Watch it!

Save the Cheerleader, Save the World....

BEST NEW SHOW OF 2007 THUS FAR....

The pilot kicked my ass![MON/9CST/NBC] - the first episode ROCKED MY SOCKS off.  They introduced four brothers, two friends, childhood history in the neighborhood, kidnapped a bookie who was a mob boss's nephew, got one of the brother's beat up, which led to the mob boss nephew getting killed (which is just a plot by the number two mob boss to start a turf war), then the good brother goes out and kills the mob boss and his neighborhood boss.... it was just crazy... and that's not half of what went on...from the credits they meant business, best opening credits ever, they take about three seconds, watch it, you'll see.

The Black Donnellys re-airs on Thursday, I think in ER's time slot...yes it does, apparently starting at "9:03PM".... ahhhh, set your VCR, DVR, whatevers!

WORST NEW SHOW OF 2007 THUS FAR...

I wanted to kick the pilots ass![TUES,WED,THURS/AFTER A.I./FOX] -  First of all, this might have been a cute show and a departure from the rest of the prime-waste of my-time game shows out there, however, FOX found a way to screw it up.  A.  The "kids" they have there to help out the contestants SUCK.  They are obviously child actors acting like kids and doing a woeful job of it.  Watching a trained, been in the business since they were born, but not very talented, though their parents keep telling them they are, kinda snobby and chip on the shoulder, ten year-old, try to be cute and engaging isn't just sad, it makes you hate them, and I don't want to hate children.  KYLE is the worst one, though Anannia, or whatever her name is with her fake laugh is right behind him.  B.  They take forever to read and answer a questions, they have to consult with the kid to see what their favorite subjects are, then Foxworthy reads the question and makes some sort of joke, then the contestant thinks, Foxworthy makes some joke about it being a question from third grade, the contestant laughs and says something, Foxworthy again, comment to the kid actor, back to Foxworthy, contestant butt-in, Foxworthy rebounds, kid-actors laugh, Foxworthy restates the rules, options, question, three You Might Be  Redneck jokes, and then the contestant answers.....Commercial Break.  WHAT!?  Have you lost your ever-lovin minds?  Last night, during the second contestant, they went from one commercial break, were back on for maybe a minute and ten seconds and went to another commercial.  I said, out loud, "Oh, you must have lost your damn mind if you think I'm gonna watch this kinda foolery, one minute between commercials, bad child actors who will soon be in rehab and Foxworthy not even saying one redneck joke in that time, no, you are dead to me."  So Are You Smater than a Fith Grader?  YES, I AM, BECAUSE I'M NOT WATCHING THIS PIECE OF DUNG.  DEAD TO ME.

Okay, well, that got a little out of hand there toward the end... probably more of a daily sort of thing, this t.v. blogging... oh well..

Final points

  • Yes, I watched the Oscars, I was underwhelmed, they were too drawn out and the retrospective mini-films were stale (not the in Memorium, that must stay, I love you Don Knotts) and then Celine Dion singing...shoot me now.
  • I'm still watching Battlestar Gallactica, Brothers and Sisters, Dresdon Files among others, just no more gas in the tank
  • Did you know kids today aren't watching Little House on the Prairie or the Waltons?  What the f?

Andy Richter has a new show coming out, with Conan O'Brien producing, premieres 3/15/07 on NBC.  Hopefully this vehicle will work.  He should have never left side-kick duties...

Okay kittens, keep it confidential and all that, MR.

email me at caconfidential@gmail.com, I'm out.

I have had it with "Lost." Had. IT. I told Alex at the beginning of this season that I was giving it three episodes to resolve something, ANYTHING--and it failed. I don't understand why JJ Abrams has such a tough time with this story arc...some things are good BECAUSE they end. Anyway. Dave Simmer said it better than I ever could:

(I apologize in advance for giving you yet another blog-addiction, but there it is.)

We quit watching AI each season pretty much as soon as the Hollywood stuff starts, because the entertainment value is definitely in the preliminaries.

Ugly Betty rocks, although I already have concerns about it outliving the goodness. It was a telenova originally, so as a friend of mine pointed out, had a beginning, middle, and END, which made for a nice story arc. Nowadays if they stumble on a moneymaker, they just ride it 'til it's long dead. Don't want that for UB.

Kyle Chandler is The Sweetness. That is all.

Finally, just on a hunch, I TiVo'd "The Black Donnellys" last week. It stayed on the DVR, and we didn't watch it until last night. Now we are so glad we don't have to wait a week for the next installment! Pretty compelling stuff, reminiscent of movies like "A Bronx Tale." It's actually very cinematic, I think. My hope with this one is that the protagonists remain sympathetic, because ultimately, that failure is what ruined The Sopranos for me. By the third season or so, I was ready for the Feds to come in and BUST them, already. Sheesh.

We watch a little too much television.
