Lets' talk Southwest Little Rock

Say what you want about immigration- this ain't a political blog- but these authentic Mexican restaurants and taco stands in Southwest Little Rock are downright awesome.

Mercado San Jose' on Geyer Springs has a bakery, a grocery store, and a restaurant in the back.  The Menudo (tripe soup) is $5.99, and the chicken sope' was $2.50 and both were fantastic.  The store has the best selection of latino hot sauces that I have yet to find in the city.  The Tecate was good and cold.  My kinda place.

Now THAT is the kind of food reporting this town needs. The pictures alone brought the taste of cilantro to my palate. The image of Mexican food on a Chinese-motif plate brought a smile to my face.

A guide to the Mexican restaurants of SWLR would be a public service. I've ventured to the lunch buffet of the grocerty store/cafe on S. Barrow Road but most often frequent the taco truck at Best Car Wash in front of Sam's. Best $3.00 lunch in Little ock - two tacos (I pefer tinga -spicy chicken - and al pator - roast pork cooked with onions and pineapples), garnished with freshly sliced avacado, clilantro and a key west lime slice.

ARK. BLOG: I like that truck, too. But I think the one that sets up behind the Mexican store at 65th and University might even be better. I like that you get rice and beans with a burrito, plus a grilled jalapeno and grilled onion, too.

"The Menudo (tripe soup) is $5.99..."

No thanks. Spirit does not (knowingly) eat tripe.

Here's a suggestion: create an annotated Google map of the food finds off the beaten path. I've seen it done on other cities and you can add pics and other information.

You don't have anything better to do in your spare time, right?

Seriously, I think it would drive more traffic to the AT website.

ARK. BLOG: Good idea.

If you're over on this side of town anyways, stop in at Taqueria Katerina, which is probably the best Mexican place in town. Daily lunch specials, and they offer a variety of plate lunches for $3.99 apiece. Solid, authentic Mexican food, generous portions, and super-friendly staff.

ARK. BLOG: You mean Taqueria Karina, on 65th?

Dat be de one...

My apologies, but my Spanish spelling is far, far worse than my Spanish speaking, which ain't much.

When I first started going to Karina's back about six years or so ago, it was all in Spanish, and so I was reduced to picking something at random off the menu and pointing to it. Learned a lot about Mexican cuisine that way ;-)
