From that list, I would get a beer flat and, for the first go-around, I'd get a Lindsey's pork sandwich, meat-on-a-stick from the Filipinos, a roasted ear o' corn, a spicy chicken breast from Popeye's, a Fifi's fruit crepe, lemonade, and Yarnell's ice cream. And a beer.

EATARK: And another beer.

Hmmmm... somebody knows me too well.

I don't mean to be a downer (or thread hijacker) while dreams of Filipino meat-on-a-stick, barbecue pork from 12th and Woodrow, Max's angel food cake, Koon's Rice-a-Roni (well, strike that one), Hardin's strawberries, and rotisserie meat from Fresh Market dance through our heads, but .here's food for thought, pun intended.

Congress last week had its "Congressional Food Stamp Challenge."

http://tinyurl.com/3dj3vn

Just 4 of 435 members took up the challenge - to eat on $21 worth of groceries all week, with $21 being the average weekly food-stamp allotment per person nationwide. None of the four was from Arkansas. The rules included no freebie stuff at receptions, not even the free coffee that's in every office.

I came up with my list of $21 worth of food for the week, and it's pretty gross. Maybe you could survive and not starve on $21 a week, but how healthily? Any ideas? My stuff included things I could cook, but what if I had neither a stove/hotplace nor a fridge?

ARK. BLOG: You start with five pounds of beans and five pounds of rice. You buy two big onions. two big bell peppers. a clove of garlic and a couple of ham hocks. You cook the beans with the ham and vegetables and salt and pepper. You cook yourself some rice to go with it every night. you look for a bargain bag of apples. you get a big bag of generic cereal. a gallon of milk. I think you could make it. But as good as these things are individually they WOULD get boring. You would have to have a stove. Otherwise, it's bargain peanut butter and day old bread for you, chump. be sure to get some fruit if you can.

I never understood having
fast food restraunts at a festival. I like to go to eat
something different myself.
