The Melon Wagon is Back!
The first time I've seen it this year was this afternoon. They get these "Arkansas Sweets" melons from a White River farm on the outskirts of the greater Tupelo, Arkansas metroplex. The Melon Wagon sets up at 12th and Pine in Little Rock. You can't miss it.
I'm goin in.
Awesome.
Sweet and Juicy.
They range from $9-$12, depending on size. Cantelopes are about 3 bucks. The folks here and very nice and they'll load the melons in the car for ya.
Sure, they're not Hope Watermelons. Wanna know why? It's because these are better. That's right- I said it. Blasphemy you say? I say go try one of these bad boys.

in the melon world, Tupelo is considered a suburb of Cave City, home of the sweetest melons you will ever find.
(the secret is in the limestone hills)
Hope just grows bigger melons, so the flatlanders don't come eat all the good ones

I was at Kroger yesterday looking over the small choice of seedless melons hoping in my mind the melon wagon would be out on 12th soon. My summer officially got better as of now.

Raised in Newport, with family in Hope, I can say for certain these melons are better than Hope's. Boy howdy, I want one.

Wow! I read Tupelo, Ar and couldnt believe it. I actually know where that is and have family there. Im pretty sure that every year Hope and Cave City have their watermelon festivles during the same week. I flipped a coin one year see which one I would go to. I ended up in Cave City and it was a lot of fun. Watermelons everywhere and they were great! Ill take a better one over a bigger one anyday! (No offense to any Hope readers)

Anybody remember the watermelon stand on Fair Park just south of 12th street? There's a Walgreen's there now. I lived in Oak Forest back then (early 60's). Big metal ice filled coolers full of watermelons and sodas. Served up by the slice on a lot covered in sawdust and picnic tables. I even remember a porch swing set up. As kids we'd scrounge through the alleys and ditches looking for discarded coke bottles to turn in for the deposit so we could get our own ice cold cokes, which of course was the way we referred to all soft drinks. What kind of cokes do you have? Sprite, Coke, Dr. Pepper, etc... all were cokes.
