A tasty plateful
Kat Robinson's Tie Dye Travels ventures to WLR for a plate of fine Middle Eastern fare at Layla's. She writes:
Can't beat the color of the gyro plate at Layla's. Whether it's the ruddy brown of the gyro meat, the bright green and red of the tabbouleh, the startling white tzatziki, the creamy pita, the dark yellow hummus or the bright yellow marinated onions -- it all just pops like crazy when pictured on a blue plate.
And the taste? It's a palate, too.

Mr. Mordy and I had our first Layla's experience about 3 weeks ago. We sat down and starting talking to the one other table that was there, and they told us it was pretty much a one man operation, and that it could be a bit slow. We weren't in any hurry, so we resolved to just sit back and enjoy ourselves.
After about 5 minutes, another table was filled, and we continued to scan the menu. Then out of the back, the owner and another man emerged with raised voices. We couldn't understand much, but did finally determine that the man was there to pick up some meat, and the owner was telling him he would have to come back after he served the tables. Soon, the meat man was shouting very loudly. He stood in the middle of the room and yelled to all of the customers, "This man is about to prepare your food after touching raw meat and not washing his hands!" This went on for a few minutes, with the meat man finally saying, "I'm going to call the police!" During all of this, Mr. Mordy was formulating an escape plan in case it was needed.
The meat man finally went outside and started pacing and talking on his cell phone. The owner apologized emensely for the ruckus (and made a big display of washing his hands), and took our orders. No one left, we just all chalked it up to a disgrunted customer.
The owner took our orders and went to work in the kitchen. Eventually the police did arrive and told the owner that he was within his right to refuse service to the man, and that if he continued to cause problems, that they would arrest him. We eventually saw the man drive off in his car.
Despite all of this, we'll definitely go back - the food was that good. None of the other patrons seemed to mind either, as everyone was happily noshing away on hummus and gyros when we left.
Go and enjoy Layla's, but keep an open mind and an empty stomach!

OK, I should have clicked on the blue thingy, but I did not. Now, I know! How does this Greek food compare to Leo's Greek Castle? The Terrace?
I would LOVE some recipes for tzatziki, baba ghannouj, and hummus.
FYI, there is Middle Eastern yougurt available at the Fresh Market.

I personally thought Layla's was much better than Leo's. I find Leo's gyro meat somewhat dry on occassion, and the big slice of onion and drowning of tzatziki is completely off putting.
I started seaking gyros other places than Leo's in earnest when I overheard one of Leo's wait staff say to some friends "You know who has better gyros than us? Frosttop!" If the staff is telling you to go other places...listen!
