Road Food

On my way back to my hometown for the holiday, I stopped off in Memphis for lunch.

Neely's BBQ, opened by the nephews of the famous Jim Neely, the owner of Interstate BBQ.

I gots the pulled pork platter.  With Fries and Beans.  Sorry, I should have gotten the slaw or potato salad, but I was craving some fries.  And boy were they good.

The sauce was good, but the pork itself was the real standout- tender and smoky.  The beans were also the best I've had in a while.  Nice and tangy.

Mrs. Belly gots the small BBQ Sammich.

And who can resist the BBQ spaghetti?   This is good stuff.  Pasta with BBQ sauce and pork- how could you miss?

Stop off at Neely's next time you're in Memphis.  You'll be glad ya did.  Got a good spot in Memphis/West Memphis to tell us about?

Man...that looks good, dude...

I wish I made it over there more often...

Any day I do I do the same ol' 'vous...

I'll look up Neely's now, though...thanks for the tip...

Dyer's burgers. Greasy, real burgers on a toasted bun. Excellent fries and cheap cold beer. There is one on Beale and one out in Bartlett. Best burger in Memphis.

Try the BBQ Shop on Madison. Tastier than Neely's, less pressure to move you through in rapid time than Rendezvous.

I second Dyer's burgers. The best burgers ever. The burgers are deep fried in ninety year old grease. Ask for the "dip." The entire burger, after assembly, is dunked bun and all into the grease and allowed to soak a bit. Think you can handle it?

You can visit Buckley's downtown for a great steak. I haven't found a better filet on Earth. The Tortellini Soup and creamed spinach are perfect foils to the steak.

"The entire burger, after assembly, is dunked bun and all into the grease and allowed to soak a bit."

That doesn't sound very good to me.

They do not do this to every burger. That is just if you ask for the "dip."

It is very interesting however if you say no, your arteries and heart will thank you!

gus's fried chicken. they have a little heat but it is some of the best chicken you will ever have. if you are going to something at the orpheum it is only a couple of blocks away and makes a great dinner. sides are only so so but it doesn't matter cause the chicken is that good.

I have heard great things about Gus's Fried Chicken.

I am going to see David Copperfield at the Orpheum in February so this will be a great dinner spot.

Any other good places to have dinner near Orpheum?

Has anyone tried Famous Dave's, the new place on Shackleford [formerly Tia's]? I think it might be a chain.

My all time favorite is Payne's BBQ on Lamar. There is also a location on Elvis Presley Blvd. It's the bright green vinegary slaw that makes their chopped pork sandwich one of the best I have ever had.
