Good luck food on the first

From Joel DiPippa:

Happy New Year!

This time of year still has food traditions as we begin the new calendar year. Tuesday night, all of the family that lives in Little Rock got together for a meal of good luck food.  This means I got to keep working on the settings of the new camera and take some food pictures.  From left to right, we had grilled kielbasa over sauerkraut, the bowl of black-eyed peas, a plate of grilled turkey kielbasa (for a lower sodium intake), a large bowl of boiled red cabbage with some feta cheese and crumbled pecans on top, and down front some star fruit.  Okay, the star fruit is just something we like and has not become a tradition ... yet.

I always have the required
blkeyed peas, south La.
cabbage/pork chop dish,
mashed taters, fried okra
and, of course, cornbread.
Now,,, if we only had fresh
vineripe tomatoes in Jan!!

I put the black-eyed peas in to soak Monday afternoon before Mr. EY and I had a lovely dinner at Acadia. When we got back from the NYE party (way after dinner), I put them in the crock pot with the last of the hog jowls I bought for Jan 1, 2007. The crock pot did the work while we slept and when we got up, Mr. EY sauteed some collard greens (pre-washed, bagged, yes, I'm lazy). He used a few cloves of garlic, some sriracha (chili sauce) and sesame seeds. I was hoping for cornbread, but forgot to mention it. We made it just fine without it.
