Berry good

Maggie C.B. Smith reports Saturday morning from the new NLR farmers' market:

I went out this morning and it was lovely. A little sparse, and the handful of booths had to fight with the gale-force winds the whole time, but comfortable, beautiful weather for everyone else. I really hope to see this new venture grow and become successful. I picked up 2 quarts of strawberries from Hardin Farms, as well as a bag full of gorgeous watercress. There were also plenty of roots, greens, honey, eggs, and fresh herbs. I forgot to bring my camera with me, but here are the strawberries after I got them home. They taste as good as they look.

The nice folks from Mt. High farm are on hwy 64 in Conway. Got some very nice berries!

Don't make the mistake I made by going late in the morning. There were no berries left.

Ditto on the late arrival...got there about 10:30 or so, and there wasn't much left. Picked up a couple of bags of salad greens, some rosemary and the last of the organic dog treats for the furbabies. There was some beefalo (does anyone know what that is??) and some fresh (never frozen) delta catfish...had we not been running errands afterwards, we would have picked up some of that.

Several of the vendors admitted they had no clue how much to bring, but will definitely be bringing more next time. All in all, nice experience, and we'll be frequent visitors!

We arrived around the same time, Mordy. (I had my little boy on my shoulders when he wasn't down visiting with doggies.)

I bought a beefalo roast and some sausage--both very good--from those same folks when they were at the LR market. I believe it's some strain of beef cattle bred with a buffalo.

I just wish it could be purchased before it's frozen, but I understand the farmers' predicament there.

After we got skunked on the NLR strawberries, we went to the LR market and got some strawberries (grown around Cabot, I believe). They were delicious.

Ah, yeah, I was there around 8 and there were still tons of berries when I left. I'm pleased to hear they sold out (sorry for you guys, though) because I guess that means the turn out was better than expected.

I got there at 9 and there were 4 things left with only one vendor. The strawberries I got at NLR looked a lot better than the ones I got at LR last weekend.

The old Safeway store at the corner of 12th and Cedar Streets doesn't look like much these days - a peeling blue hulk of a building, marooned between the Willie Hinton Community Resource Center and the church on the next corner. /more/

As Judge Wendell Griffen says, courage is not a vice (though critics seem to fault him for having it) but a virtue. /more/
