Update: Mexico Chiquito

MEXICO CHIQUITO Since the eat-in Mexico Chiquito closed in Lakewood some years back, we’ve often been heard to lament the old girl — storied Mexican joint of our troubled youth. More than one of our best memories as a kid originates there, us nursing a glass of their syrupy, neon-red punch, waiting with the family for our steaming plates to arrive. Imagine, then, how excited we were when we saw the new sit-down (albeit much smaller) Chiquito going up in West Little Rock, on Cantrell Road. Sadly, you can’t go home again, even when it comes to restaurants. While the punch turned out to be familiar – a stick to your upper lip, pineapple-y concoction that actually makes you thirstier the more you drink of it – that was all that was the same. While some of the flaws can be blamed on new-restaurant jitters, service was slow and lax, and the food was either cold (the cheese dip) or burned to a crisp (the quesadillas) by the time it reached our table. Worst of all, everything was expensive, starting with that glass of punch ($2.25 each), right through the bean-dippy cheese dip ($5.95), all the way down to the two tacos we ordered ala carte to pair with our plate lunch ($2.25 each, for something surpassed in quality by the hard shells found at Taco Bell for .79 cents). In the end, a lunch trip with two adults and one child cost $38.54 before tip. While those prices might be okay if the food was up to snuff, they’re obviously not serving anything good enough to be that dear yet. Full-service restaurants at 4511 Camp Robinson Road, NLR, 1524 W. Main St. Jacksonville and 13924 Cantrell. No alcohol. CC $$ 982-0533 LD daily. Takeout at 102 S. Rodney Parham Road and 11406 W. Markham St.

I agree with your assessment.

I was excited when I found out my entire family was going to get together last Saturday for a get together at the new Mexico Chiquito on HWY 10. I wish the food was as good as I remembered.

Our service was fast (for one waiter taking care of a party of 10 plus 4 other tables). The cheese dip was lukewarm at best. Everyone enjoyed the margaritas, so that made up for the cool cheese dip.

The food came out hot, but there was nothing special about it. We were all OK with the food, but everyone agreed that it was nothing special.

Maybe I'm spoiled by the food from the Rodney Parham location. Great food with fast and GOOD service. The manager of this location is also great.

Taco Bell's up to .89 per. Too much for that junk. And is it just me or are they closing them down across the state - Brinkley, Helena, etc. And when they're not closing them down, they're tearing down the old stucco bldgs and replacing them with pseudo modern replacements in the same spot. Waste.

Go about a mile or less further west to Senior Tequila. It is SO SO much better than M.C. Great service, great food, great prices. The only drawback is the patio, which is next to the parking lot.

My wife and I ate there for lunch and had a combo meal for two, cheese dip and a couple waters and it was $15.32 without tip.

It came with a chicken quesadilla, a chicken burrito, 2 chicken chimichangas and 2 hard shell tacos which was more than enough food for the two of us. The problem was that everything except the tacos tasted the same.

I have no idea how 2 adults and a child could spend $40 there, but I guess it's possible. I stopped ordering anything but water with my meal when they started charging more than $2 for a glass of tea. It's better for me anyway.

I'll have any of the combo specials 1 - 19. Amazing, they are all called "Brown Glop, Cheese on Top". Dang, it's almost as bad as Brownings. (Evil grin)
