Za! Za!

Za Za, the pizza-salad-gelato creation of Scott McGehee and John Beachboard on the back side of the Heights Theater shops, is an early smash -- and a bit of a victim of its somewhat hard-to-cipher self-serve setup. But there's not a thing lacking in food quality and they are humping to refine the system to make it more user friendly in the face of opening days hordes. (John said they expected to sell six gallons of home-made gelato a day; it's more like 24.)

We went for a third visit Saturday to try one of the entrees -- a Tuscan-style 38-ounce ribeye. Alas, the wood-fired pizza oven is too slammed with pizzas nonstop to follow through for now on the idea to cook the steaks on cast-iron pans in the oven. So no steak.

But they are serving shrimp Za Za ($32), a lip-smacking pile of jumbo shrimp, cooked sweet and tender, with fresh lemon, olive oil, garlic and salt, heaped on a bed of pizza crust strips, fresh basil and cherry tomatoes, which soak up all the wonderful juice. There were maybe 30 shrimp in our order. Some folks next to us -- party of four -- split the shrimp and two pizzas and that's a mighty fine meal for a reasonable price for quality this high.

Then you finish with gelato, a selection of which is shown below. Some day, they won't be sold out of chocolate-hazelnut. Ours: chocolate and coconut. Molto bene.

Where is this place located at? I am in desperate need of good real gelato.

I miss it so.

This place is the real deal! I'm from Baltimore originally and we have the Little Italy neighborhood there that has great gelato and pizza and Scott and Co. have done it here! I went there Friday night and I was impressed with the Italian sausage pizza and my wife got a build your own salad, it was all yummy and authentic Italian. On the gelato we trield Pistachio and Stracchieta (Choco. chip), they were both outstanding and as good as any I've ever had in Italian owned pastry shops on the East coast. Thanks God for Scott McGehee and Co. for having the vision and bucks to open this place. We were really in need of this type of establishment in LR.

It's located in the Old Heights Theater building next to Mary Healey's and behind off Kavanaugh.

Food = incredible

Service = egh

Confusion = high

I cannot tell you how many issues I have had with this place, but I will start out saying that the pizza is easily the best in LR. Now to the bad stuff:

1) Tried to go 3 times when they said they would be open. Each time was given another delayed date. Understandable...

2) They finally open so we run up on a weekend night during opening week for pizza. They apparently decided they weren't open for dinner until the following week.

3) Attempt to call in an order the following week for dinner. The person on the phone declares they do not do take out at this time with no explanation. However, if I had wanted I could have gone to the restaurant, stood in line and placed a "to-go" order at the counter and would have been served. This was not explained to me but done by several people I know.

4) Finally make it to dinner where I can get served and order a pizza. The credit card machine is broken. On this very rare occasion I had cash. Others were not so fortunate and had to leave. Impossible to get a second beer after paying for your meal/first drinks.

5) Food was so good we decide to try a few different pizzas a few days later. Run up there for dinner. Closed. No explanation. Randomly closed on a Sunday when their menu AND door say they are open on Sunday for lunch and dinner.

The parentals have already made a trip to sample the gelato, but the whole family is planning on making a concerted dining effort.

I look forward to giving it a real try-out.

Lance - I'm with you, tried to order takeout and they would say that's down the road a week or so.

Tonight I just walked in and ordered a pepperoni pizza and Caesar salad and mentioned that I needed it boxed to go. Worked.

It was out of this world. Thank goodness I'M within walking distance!

Went last night.

>> Salad = very good
>> Pizza (4 cheese & sausage/pepperoni = good (small and sparce toppings
>> gelato = good-very good
>> Space = crowded & crazy
>> Service = they tried, but the place is overwhelmed... maybe they to ration or do reservations only (LOL)

Za Za is a disappointment in many ways. If it didn't have Scott behind it, nobody would give it a second thought ...

Dear ARBRLF:

You care to explain why you think Za Za's is such a dissapointment? Just curious, since I thought the food was outstanding. Yes they had some logistical problems, but I believe in time they will work those issues out.

Pizza is so-so overall. But nice addition to LR. Love that they have
great salad options.

I agree with others who point out that if this were bigger city this would be ho-hum, just another decent place--maybe--but that customers having other options would opt-out because of the service and the crazy seating and confusing system.

But we'll take what we can get here. A welcome addition to the Heights where remember, you still have the likes of Brownings.

Review in the print edition said they serve a 38-ounce ribeye.

Seriously?
