Fresh produce, NLR-style

Grace Anderson sends a photo and note about her under-$20 haul from the North Little Rock farmers market on Saturday:
I just made it out to the CAFM in NLR this morning for the first time and I am a believer! Here's a first-timers haul:
(Read from left to right, top to bottom)
Summer Squash
Red Onions
Head of garlic
Some sort of lighter beans from Stowe's (don't remember what type exactly)
Plums
Golden Sun Tomatoes (sooooo good!)
Tomatillo
Sweet/hot pepper from Stowe's
Salsa pepper
Purple pepperI may end up running up there on Tuesday to find some more of those little golden tomatoes (seriously - yum yum)! Now it's time to cook some squash!

Comments
Wait--the CAFM is open on Tuesdays, too? I've been extremely pleased with the results of my visits there so far. I'm trying to stock up on things while they're in season, and get them in the freezer for the upcoming year. June and July have, so far, been great months for going "local," and if I can put enough away, I can continue the trend into the winter months, as well as continuing to follow the season's harvest.
*taps foot impatiently, waiting for personal garden to yield*

LOVE the CAFM, but didn't get up and out early enough this Saturday morning. However, I stopped by Green Tree Nursery, picked up some bradley county pink tomatoes and petit jean bacon, then swung by Old Mill bread for a fresh loaf. Headed home to make myself a BLT. The lettuce was left over from the previous week's CAFM and was STILL perfectly fresh! Just begs the question - how old is the stuff in the grocery stores that it goes bad in 3 days???? Well worth the extra cost if it last for a whole week (and counting)! Anyway...everything except for the mayo on the BLT was Arkansas made/grown, and absolutely delish!

I have heard some rumors of a better market in LR outside of the Rivermarket bounds.
I do so wish these were not so Saturday morning bound. I have trouble acknowledging the time before noon on Saturdays. Though I have been tempted by Grace's recommendations to make a really early run of the market before going to sleep.

Joel - check out Green Tree Nursery. They get most of their local produce from a UALR professor who grows vegetables on a couple of acres. While the CAFM and LRFM have more exotic fair, you can get some fresh and tasty tomatoes, squash, okra, purple hull peas, and eggplant (to name a few). Best of all, they're open until 5:30! I don't think they're open on Sunday, though...
