Pub grub -- Dive in!!!
.jpg)
This discussion began on an ad hoc basis in another thread, but I thought it was a worthy topic for an open forum -- bar food, greasy dives, righteous diners and other earthly delights. What better emblem than the burger at Midtown Billiards, where the house funk is thicker than even this burger. "Great at all hours, even better at three in the morning," says photographer Joel DiPippa.

A cheeseburger would probably be my "last meal" of choice. Surprisingly enough I think Fisherman's Warf in Hot Springs has a pretty awesome burger. I'd love to here about some of the better burgers around Little Rock. Another that comes to mind is the burger at Sims.

I'm not sure if I love burgers because they usually come with french fries, one of my weeaknesses, or for the burger itself, but I do love a good burger. Getting a cheeseburger is about the best decision you can make if you are at Midtown at 3 in the morning.
I have had the burger at Crazee's a few times recently and each time it has been quite good. I haven't been to The Box in a few years, but they also have a great burger and fairly seedy atmosphere. The other burger that stands out in my mind is one at Zack's Place on University, but I probably haven't had it in 10 years, so I can't verify that it's still as good as I remember.
Of course, there is also the Cotham's burger (hubcap or not) and the question of whether there is a difference in taste/quality between the original location in Scott and the downtown location.
In my book, the burger at Cheer's in the Heights is also good.

Crazee's is a pretty good burger....but their chili dog is the best! Cheers is good...The Box is good for when you need to grease your joints..I'm not a big fan of the Cotham's burger...it seemed a little dry to me. I hear you on the fries...you can't have one without the other.
Speaking of chili dogs...it Georgia's Gyro's still open in NLR? They had a good dog as well. I might have a chili dog twice a year...I have no idea where that craving comes from...not enough lips and buttholes in my diet I guess. lol

On bluename -- pub fare isn't the only option for late night diners who want to have a drink. I found this place in Boston -- no reason it couldn't happen here.

A Midtown burger (though I've never tasted one prior to 2a.m.) is always exceptionally good. The Box has one of the best burgers in town. Sports Page is also a great place for a greasy hangover cure. And I'm a big fan of Town Pump.
'Never had a burger at Sim's--too distracted by the pulled pork--but I'll have to make a special trip to try it soon.
Anyone know a good place for a patty melt?

Copper Grill serves a pretty mean burger.
I think LR needs way more late night options. Something other than fast food or Waffle House.
This town shuts it down too early. Way too early.

It's not a dive, but I think Arkansas Burger Co. has a mighty good burger. Vermillion Water Grille has a suprisingly tasty burger at lunch too.
On more of the dive train of thought, Port 'O Call in New Orleans has one of the best burgers I've ever eaten. Rum drinks aren't too bad either!

Best burger I have ever had was at Dyer's in Memphis on Beale. Cheap, greasy, big, and fantastic.
Dyer's is one of my favorite places in Memphis. Click on name for a link to their website.

Arkansas Burger Company has the best hands down.
And for real purists you should say hold the cheese and no gd mayo!
If its a great burger, cheese only gets in the way.
Jake's, Jack's and Snuffer's in Dallas ain't too shabby either.
Lulav's sliders maybe the best kept secret in Little Rock & the Hop is has to be in the Top 5 in Little Rock.
Brenda's Bigger Burger in Fayetteville is the best in NWA although I only think they are open from 10-2 every other Wednesday, every other month during even numbered years.
Seriously I love that place but it was never open.

Hurm. I agree. Lulav's Bistro Burgers are fantastic. I absolutely love them.
The Sportspage is another greasy and horrible but oh so good favorites. ABC may be the best overall.
Returning to bar food - So many places seem hit or miss. There are lot of places that are restaurants & bars so it is difficult to make a lot of good comparisons. I have only been to Zach's once or twice, but it was quite tasty.
Some later places would be nice, but it is hard to pull off. JenJens, you know I am a night owl who curses these professional hours I keep. So tried to do it, but why they could not do the late night dining is a whole different conversation.

Zack's Place has a lot going for it in the price department, too -- especially with the daily special. Sure, it's not gorgeous food. It's grub -- but not bad at all.
Average night there will be a choice of entrees on the board (pot roast, fried chicken, chicken fried steak, that sort of thing) and a list of sides (potatoes, corn, beans, sweet potatoes). There's sometimes also a dessert selection. It's a pretty decent plate lunch or dinner and well worth a stop if you're needing a fill-up.
I'm big on the fried chicken salad -- a generous portion of chicken strip pieces atop a bed of lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, Cheddar cheese and cashew nuts. It's a big plateful, and it hits just about every spot (veggies, protein, dairy). I'm also a big fan of the Mozz (pronounced Mots) and the beer-battered mushrooms.
My one complaint with Zack's is that you need to take a coat -- it's often down to around 65 or lower inside. There's a time and a place to be cool -- but Zack's takes it too literally.
It's still one of my favorite places to shoot darts or catch a couple of rounds of Trivial Pursuit.

Try the burger at West End. Bigger than most and really my favorite. Interesting Buff Grill hasn't been mentioned here since it wins so many "best of" awards. West End, if you head left when you walk in and hang out in the "tall" section, isn't very smoky for a smoking place. Great ventilation. Only smoking place I go regularly. Chili nachos also awesome, and all appetizers are half price at happy hour. But seriously ... don't miss the burger. You'll be wowed.

Yes, I love some Lulav--Matt's an excellent bartender and a hell of a guy!!
The cheese platter is excellent but you need four big girls and two bottles of wine to finish it off!.
Sorry, off topic.... Joel's right--nothing beats the Midtown burger.

I think Charlotte's in Keo has the best burger in Central AR. It has great seasoning and it tastes really fresh. I also love the slidersat Lulav. Copper Grill has good burger, especially the stuffed one with blue cheese, good stuff!
The Box is old school to the max. I love going there for some grease and atmosphere. I recently had a lunch bruger at Ferneau and it was excellent. The burger had fried dill pickle slices on it. One thing to say there are alot of burger joints in LR and AR to say the least and some real good ones.

At my age the last thing I need to be doing is eating a cheeseburger at 2 AM. But I hear that the Midtown burger is great.
Cheers makes a good one as does Arkansas Burger Company.
Joel-I tried a variation of the pork loin w/zucchini recipe. It turned out really well! Would you like me to send it in?

Amazing how about 90% of the places mentioned are still smoking establishments. I have vowed to never darken the door of another smoking place unless I'm playing music there, or someone I'm dying to see is performing there.
As for my favorite burger, I'm still stuck on Shorty's in Conway. Sorry, no beers to be had there, but I just love their burgers, and they toast the buns too! Chocolate peanutbutter shakes are quite dandy also.

Bop, I would LOVE to see & hear what you did. I never got around to giving you the full recipe i modified in my dish, so lets see what we can do. ANd I sorry you won't be at the Midtown for a good 0h-two hundred burger. It is a thing unto itself.
And while I cannot call it pub grub, Lulav's Bistro Burgers ... still one of the best lunches and burgers I have ever had. THough that may be partially attributable to my company.
