Sixteen Arkansas Restaurants Made the Cut for Wine Spectator

The August issue of Wine Spectator honors some of Arkansas’ most renowned restaurants in their annual Best Wine Lists of 2008 issue. Sixteen Arkansas restaurants made the cut, winning the magazine’s “Award of Excellence”. There were two newcomers to the list year: Copper Grill and Grocery and Valentine’s Restaurant, both of which were also noted for offering inexpensive bottles.

The rest of the list includes restaurants from all over the state: Acadia (Little Rock), Anderson’s Cajun Wharf (Little Rock), Autumn Breeze Restaurant (Eureka Springs), Bordinos Restaurant and Wine Bar (Fayetteville), Capers (Little Rock), Capriccio Grill (Little Rock), Chef Paul’s (Hot Springs), Ciao Baci (Little Rock), The Crystal Dining Room Restaurant (Eureka Springs), Ferneau (Little Rock), James at the Mill (Johnson), River Grille (Bentonville), Sonny William’s Steak Room (Little Rock), and Theo’s (Fayetteville).

Wine Spectator offers free access to their dining guide, including info about all the restaurants mentioned above at www.winespectator.com/restaurants.

I will agree with most of this list, save one exception:

Capers. First of all, their pricing is all over the place. It seems to go from the $20-30 range (and not a vast amount of decent wines listed in that range, at that) to the $50-60 range in a hurry. Of course, I walked out of that restaurant after being ignored for 20 minutes, but while I was waiting, I did pour over the wine list and was not that impressed. At all.

Haven't been to Capriccio or Bill Valentine's- Bill Valentine's is a higher priority than Capriccio- - I hear mixed things.

What's up with Sonny Williams lately? Haven't been there in years.

I think Copper Grill has an absolutely fantasic wine menu. Good lunch, too.

I was pretty disappointed with Valentine's. The food was average and the service flat out sucked. An hour to seat us, with empty tables everywhere. Food delivered to the wrong people and orders incorrect. My waitress said they didn't have any change, so she actually short changed me on my bill. Then before I got out the door she ran up with some change, but still not enough to set things right. Jeez. Could they not send someone to the beer garden for change for a $20?

Wow. That sounds piss poor. No change??? That's flat-out ridiculous. And an hour to be seated? With empty tables? That's amazing. But not in a good way.

I'll keep that in mind, although I still want to check it out for myself. You know- B. Valentine boasts the best and most affordable wine list in town, by the way.

Okay, before I begin, let me apologize for appearing to be a pedant -- but it must be the copy editor lurking in my soul that is making me do this.

Pore is when one reads a wine list intently.
Pour is what you do when you take the liquid from the wine bottle to the glass.

Thanks for pointing out the error. Really and truly. I'm a fanatical spellchecker, etc, but this totally slipped by me.

I appreciate the correction. Noted in my brain. Brain says thank you.

Capriccio and I have some bad blood so I don't intend to return there for a few more years.

Valentines has been on my list to try but I am going to join JenJens in admonishing them for such horrible service to C&BD.

Oh, and if you have not had an excuse to do so yet this week, you have a week left for the River Cities Restaurant Week(s). Been to two places this past week, including one I had not been to before.

This is quite an honor indeed for local places to make the list when you consider the selection process. Nominate your own establishment, submit a menu & wine list along with a check for $250 payable to the Wine Spectator. If the check clears the bank, you're on the list! Pretty exclusive group.
