The restaurant business is hard

A Hillcrest tipsters reports that following a staff meeting last night, the coffee house and restaurant Laughing Moon shut down this morning.

After previously shuttering its dine-in operation, Bennett’s Market and Catering has closed its Rock Creek Square storefront to focus exclusively on contract catering.

After only a few months in business, Zapata Grill, on Warden Road, has also closed.

my residule disdain for sufficient ground was such that i never even tried it under the laughing moon moniker. won't miss it.

will miss Bennett's, though. One of very few reasons I would venture west of Mississippi.

And the one time i navigated the hell that is Warden Road for Zapata, it was fantastic. location, location, location, y'all.

Damn. Where will Skirtman hang out now?

The hard economic times will continue to take it's toll on mid-level restaurants. The rich can continue to afford the high cuisine they are used to, but the middle class will have to downgrade (as I'm learning). Starbucks closing stores, Bennett's and Laughing Moon (both decent in my eyes - Laughing Moon seemed to have quite a business of students and such and the return of the UAMS crowd a few blocks away should have bolstered their business) both closing - all signs that it is getting rough out there. Sadly, I see more coffee shops closing - by the time this is done the only shop outside of the River Market in town will be Starbucks (yes, I know Boulevard serves coffee, but they close early - I need a coffee shop open from 7a-10p). I best get my scone fixes in at Java Roasting while I still can...

You'll see more of this - let me assure you. If they are not packing them in all the time, you best enjoy them while you can.

Those that are struggling will either have to development new potential business or cut expenses drastically in order to survive.

As a Restaurant owner, personally speaking, we saw a 15% drop in sales when Spring Break hit - and we have worked very hard to regain that lost ground. We're not there yet, but we're getting there.

Looking across the board on sales figures, it would appear that only the Fast Food outfits benefit from a slow down in the economy. McD's and BK are posting record sales - go figure.
