Home alone Part II

Joel DiPippa files a second report on the pleasure of being able to dash home for lunch and put a little verve in the cooking at the same time.

I continue to try to make lunch more than just food, but something memorable.  Building on my ability to quickly get home for lunch, and the fact that there was a good half pound of flat-iron steak left I went for more with gusto.

As soon as I got home, a pot of water with some Worcestershire sauce and garlic cloves went onto the stove with the green beans in a colander above to steam. Then I sliced "pocket steaks," my name for flat-iron medallions, to a nice thickness and got them on the cast-iron skillet.  It took a little bit of patience, but I was rewarded.

The green beans were done and the steak was on top of them to rest.  I did not waste the time.  Instead, I deglazed the skillet with some vermouth (bought by the fifth for cooking purposes) and added some butter and lemon juice.  Freshly minced garlic and a handful of chopped parsley went in to absorb the last bit of heat.

Plated and enjoyed for lunch.

mmm, sounds better than what I scrounged up for lunch.

Since its almost 15 min between home & the office, I only get about 30 min at the apt so I usually grab leftovers or something quick like a sandwich. Today I did both, actually.

Last night I made some carrot/tomato soup because, well, I have a bunch of carrots to use and I'm in love with my new immersion blender. Heated up some of the leftover soup while I was fixing a grilled cheese (multigrain bread, american & mozz - man I love my grilled cheeses!), then wolfed it down. Pretended I wasn't in a rush and read a book for 15 min, then back to the grind.

This is what I had for lunch today. I already had leftover Bechamel, so it took about 12 minutes. Made one for my daughter too and she made it back to high school in time. The God of Sandwich:

I think you can also click on blue name.

Okay. No blue name. I pasted the URL in the URL box. I guess that doesn't do it. How do you do it?

Anyway cut and paste for the recipe, along with a short story and a photo.

The photo of the Croque Monsieur in Wikipedia is better, but Esquire has the recipe. This sandwich could change your life. It may at least change your clothes, to larger sizes.

Croque Monsiers are delicious but yes they are fattening.

Whoscrumdown,

If you paste a URL in the URL box, don't use the preview feature (at all!)--just hit "post". Do your proofreading in the text box beforehand.
