Taziki's opens today

Taziki’s, an upscale Greek restaurant, today brings grilled meats, hummus, stuffed grape leaves, grilled fish and many other touchstones of Greek cuisine (including the yogurt dip from which the restaurant’s name derives) to an expensively remade slot in the strip center at 8200 Cantrell Road.

The first franchise outlet of a Birmingham, Ala., restaurant, it’s overseen by restaurant veteran and former state legislator Jim Keet and his sons, Tommy and Jake. Ethnic food, heart-healthy Mediterranean cooking and food to-go are all hot properties in restaurants today, so Taziki’s should be well positioned. Many will be happy, too, that it hasn’t joined the general rush to far western locations.

Fish choices will include tilapia, grouper and salmon. It will be served in sandwiches at lunch and larger portions for dinner.

The restaurant will have a choice wine and beer selection, though the permit may not be in place for Thursday’s opening (Sept. 25). Hours will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11-9 Friday and Saturday, and 11-3 Sunday. There’s a big deck in the back.

Yum!!!
Can't wait to try this place out.
Now that I have this place and Layla's just a few block from my house, I'm in heaven.

OK, I've got a question for you foodies. If I'm a vegetarian coming into LR for business, where can I get a good meal for dinner? Price doesn't matter. Any advice would be appreciated.

ARK. BLOG: Trio's on Cantrell Road has inventive new American cuisine with a changing lineup of dinner specials every night. There is always one vegetarian special and it's often some unusual ingredients, well-prepared.

I'm so there. I'm there tomorrow.

Will they let you throw plates? probably not.

Vermilion, in the River Market District, offers vegan dishes.

Also, 8200 Cantrell Road means nothing to me. What are the nearby landmarks so I can know where Taziki's is?

It's across cantrell from pavillion in the park.

I know this is a post about Taziki's, but I'd like to second Max's comment about Trio's. I had a wonderful dinner there with some friends about a month ago. A vegetarian friend had a vegetarian plate and the rest of us had dinner envy. We all raved about our dinners, but hers sounded and looked incredible.

Acadia typically has something on their menu that doesn't have meat. You'd have to check to make sure it's strictly vegetarian (although I'd bet it is and I'd also bet they could do something fantastic too).

The chef at Acadia will also prepare vegetarian/vegan dishes upon request (even if not on the menu).

Went to Taziki's yesterday with a group of coworkers. Everyone (myself included) was impressed. Very fresh. I had the lamb gyro and the cucumber salad, both were excellent. I typically don't go to a new restaurant in the opening week, but these folks seemed to be on the ball.

I took my wife to Taziki's for lunch today.

Our first time there and I believe it will be our last time.

Having actually lived in an area with a good sized Greek population, having been to a number of Greek resturants in said area, having been to a few eateries in Greece and having some good friends who are Greek, I can tell you the food at Taziki's is underwhelming at best.

We ordered Hummus and Lamb Gyros.

THe hummus had very little flavor. About all you could taste was lemon. The pita chips were good, but the hummus was a let down.

The Gyros were just plain blah. The meat had little to no spice, so it was very bland. The meat (in both gyros) was very fatty with too much gristle. I could only eat half my gyro before I just gave up.

The fruit in the side dish was good.

I know that I'm expecting too much from a chain restaurant, but even lowering my expectations would not have helped any.

Layla's is MUCH better and will continue to be my go to place.
