The Sistine Chapel is completed

News flash from Hillcrest, Monday, Sept. 8:

I just encountered some young fellows rolling a cart full of pizza makings at Kavanaugh and Beechwood. I was driving on, but it would appear that they were making the move that signals they really are about to cook pizza in the new U.S. Pizza location in the long, long, long under-renovation former Masonic Lodge just a block east of the original Hillcrest location in a former service station. The old location is supposedly to become a much expanded version of the liquor store now tucked away in a portion of the old building.

What will become of the Damgoode Pie outlet across the street from the new U S Pizza? Will there be a pizza war?

What a waste of such a potentially cool space.

With ZaZa up the hill and Pizza Cafe down, I can't imagine EVER suffering US Pizza again, shiny new building or not.

I agree with spinsouth. If there was a local 'stuff white people like' blog, U.S. Pizza would be all up on it.

Note to US Pizza and Damn Good in Hillcrest:. Clean up!

I'm sure US Pizza will be a dive two months after it opens.

Seriously, and not just because of the crappy interiors and crappier food, but I don't get how US Pizza stays in business.

But I think that with more than a few "restaurants" here so maybe it's me. Maybe not though.

"Seriously, and not just because of the crappy interiors and crappier food, but I don't get how US Pizza stays in business. " Answer: cheap beer and patio smoking

Nah, a local 'stuff white people like' would be more Boulevard and ZaZa. As a matter a fact, I'll see you at one or the other tomorrow.

YMMV, of course, but living in Conway, where my pizza choices until recently were "this national chain that trucks in sub-par ingredients from parts unknown" or "that national chain that trucks in sub-par ingredients from parts unknown", I like USP. I typically hit the tiny one in Maumelle. Interesting topping choices (artichokes, spinach, garlic) and a nice cold beer on a thin-but-not-too-thin crust plus their salads makes for a happy EY.

I like DamGoode, but if I'm going to spend an hour and a half to two hours at dinner, I'm probably going more upscale than pizza. It's just not always worth the wait and inattentive service.

I know this is a belated comment, but here goes -

US Pizza is just OK. I mean, I've been walking past the new one since I happened to move in down the block just a couple weeks after they did, and it smells really good (wow, I had to resist writing damn good). I enjoy the cheap beer and good atmosphere but the food is just so-so in my opinion.

DamGoode however, I've always enjoyed. In my experience, it doesn't take as long as EY mentioned; I've gotten in & out easily in a lunch hour. Granted, I usually go to the Cantrell location because I like the atmosphere better. Plus I usually know a server or two; better service from friends FTW!

Oh, and with the smells of the new US Pizza wafting up & down Kavanaugh, I'm reminded of 6 some odd years ago when the first Damgoode opened and you could smell garlic basil butter all over the place.
