Comfort food

Kat Robinson at Tie Dye Travels visits one of my old haunts, the New Green Mill out on Markham Street in WLR. This was once, if memory serves, Pete Longinotti's place. My wife and I knew it as "Chili Spaghetti," because those words were included on one of those old-fashioned restaurant signs provided by Coca-Cola. They, of course, served chili spaghetti and also carved off a bodacious ham every day. Owners have changed, but not the formula of cheap, filling and tasty plate lunches, such as the meat loaf, mashed spuds and beans pictured above. (Is there still a tamale day each week, Kat?)

Comments

Indeed there is -- every Tuesday is Hot Tamale day!

YUMMM! All that sounds and looks good. Other than roast, Mama EY didn't cook typical "comfort foods", so as an adult, I find myself overly drawn to them.

I'm going to venture a guess that this place is only open for lunch? I may have to play hooky one day and head to LR for a fine comforting meal!

Kat, if you are still able to waddle, before Baby Girl arrives, check out a new place in the Spa,
Higdon Square Cafe, 706
Higdon Ferry Road.....
comfort food to die for...
gumbo, liver/onions, red beans
and rice.....
all homemade, even a cake
chef. Hubby went for the
liver/onions and gave it 4 stars.
HOW DO I ENLARGE THIS
TINY SQUARE???

Max - I must say that Pete is still around. He has moved to Louisianna to be taken care of by his daughter. His sister Olga still resides in NLR. What a family and such good food!

That sounds divine, Jazzy. I so want some good gumbo, or better yet some shrimp Creole -- the hubster won't let me get in the kitchen and work on anything that doesn't take less than 10 minutes now, so it's up to someone else to do the cooking. If she's willing, I might be able to leave the city limits again before she gets here.

If I am not mistaken, this is the same place a therapist friend of mine used to go to for breakfast on Saturdays. She always enjoyed visiting w/the rednecks types that tended to hang around there on Saturdays. She found it refreshing to spend time w/them after listening to what she listens to on a daily basis.
