New eats in Riverdale
Maddie's Place is now open on Rebsamen Park Road next door to Faded Rose in what was the Rose's original building.
Check out the menu here. Chef Brian Deloney will serve up comforting mac-and-cheese, New Orleans-flavored specialties (po boys and shrimp Creole) and some newer-age dishes, like a blackened yellow fin tuna salad. Casual. Kids menu.

I don't get the menu considering the Faded Rose is next door. Anyone?

FoodDude--
ate there last week (soft opening). Worlds more like a neighborhood NOLA joint than Faded Rose. VERY promising. Po boys on Leidenheimer. 'nuff said.

The Faded Rose has been using Leidenheimer bread for 25 years. Only right after Katrina did they have to switch to Gambino's until Leidenheimer was again able to supplying outside of NOLA

Looking at the menu, I have to say I am underwhelmed. A lot of those dishes look one note and not at all balanced. I may have to give it a try just so they have a chance to impress me, but my expectations are not high.

eldee-- sorry, didn't mean to suggest that Faded Rose DIDN'T use the right bread. and yeah, surely they'll make concerted efforts to differentiate from the Faded Rose next door (they share a parking lot, even).
My guess (and hope!) is that it will be more laid back-- that's what i was getting at.

Wish their menu included a roast beef po'boy too...

The menu doesn't even remotely seem as authentic as the Faded Rose. You've got to be kidding me if you think you'd walk into a neighborhood joint in South LA and find shrimp creole over green onion pilaf. And a hamburger po'boy? Yuck. Give me a roast beef po'boy and I'm in heaven. Doubt this place has a chance against the Rose.

uh, at the risk of sounding like the po boy nazi, the faded rose puts cocktail sauce on their shrimp po boys. i consider that a sin.
as for hamburger po boys in nola, click my name.

I didn't think I'd like the cocktail sauce either, but its actually good. You can order it with whatever you want. Their homemade mayo is pretty great. The hamburger po'boy still sounds disgusting.

I hear that Faded Rose was a good place to eat back in the day, but now it pales in comparison to its new neighbor. That's a fact jack.

Have now been to Maddie's, and it is great!! Great apps, entrees, sweets!!! Great crowd the night I went too. I believe they are missing a light fish entree and a red meat entree, but otherwise it was excellent!!!

We were there Saturday evening. Expensive, tiny portions, neither selection nor taste was exciting, mediocre service, very loud. We'll give it another try in about a month before dismissing it as another trendy mistake.

tiny portions? expensive? notrealbright, you wouldn't happen to be a plant? your review doesn't even have a hint of reality to it.

Since when does a different opinon automatically make you a plant? This is why we have different restaurants and why restaurants have menus.

A plant? Nope, just a disappointed customer. Here's reality for you... we arrived Saturday evening and had to wait only about 10 minutes (not bad as the line got a lot longer by the time we left). Asked the waiter how many shrimp were on the BBQ Shrimp plate because we wanted to share; "7 or 8. err, 6". It arrived with 4, a spoonful of bleu cheese slaw, and a piece of hard bread smaller than a communion wafer. The shrimp were tasty but not great.
I ordered the pork loin -- smaller than the palm of my hand and as thin as a saltine cracker. My wife had the catfish -- slightly overcooked (well ok, it was definitely crispy) and not any better than what I can get any any average restaurant. Service was spotty for us and the next table, but the couple in the corner were well attended... but then, they appeared to be friends of the waiter. Loud -- too loud to carry on a conversation. My wife lived in the real New Orleans for 15 years and had nothing good to say about Maddie's food; we'll go back some day, but not soon.

I wasn't impressed either. I wanted to like it, but it was more expensive & with smaller portions & not as good as....Faded Rose. I thought $4 for a small cup of chicken gumbo (no seafood) was a bit much. It was incredibly loud & just not very pleasant. My $9 oyster po-boy was ok, but stingy on the oysters & I think for $9 I should see some fries on the plate. I will say that their chips were good (Zaps if I were to guess), but still chips for a $9 sandwich (that didn't wow me) left me feeling not too impressed. But, hey, I will say that the place was packed at 1:00 on Saturday afternoon, so maybe I'm in the minority. I think it's time to pull out the Fry Daddy & whip up a dressed shrimp po-boy from scratch!
