New: Philam Gourmet

PHILAM GOURMET “Asian American Cuisine” is now served in the building that used to house the Frontier Grill. The “Asian American” is slanted toward the “Filipino,” which is interesting. We enjoyed an appetizer of Lumpiang Shanghai (pork, garlic, onions, carrots and spices in small egg roll wrappers). Tosilog, a main course, was marinated sliced pork with garlic rice and egg (sunny-side up is standard, apparently, but they’ll cook it any way you want). The pork was a little sweet for us, but we’re particularly sensitive to sweetness. Perhaps we should have ordered Tapsilog – the same thing, except with beef instead of pork. Daeng Silog substitutes bonesless milk fish. The person who ordered it was not overwhelmed by the fish. But there is a lot of stuff on the menu that you want to try, such as the soup with shrimp and ground beef, and where else will you find “Ox tail with beef/tripe & vegetables in peanut butter sauce.” The fried plantains in egg roll wrappers make a nice dessert. If you insist on American cuisine, you can even get a Philadelphia Cheese Steak with fries. We were told there’s a buffet every Friday night. That might be a good time to sample the various dishes. 2924 S. University Ave. 568-7776 No alcohol CC LD Mon.-Sat. $-$$
