Starving Artist Cafe

Lavender-glazed carrot soup with herb bread and olive oil.

While out and about with my mother this past weekend, we ran over to 411 Main Street in North Little Rock to have lunch at Starving Artist Cafe. I've always heard wonderful things about the food and am happy to say the reviews were right on.

On special for Saturday was a lavender-glazed carrot soup. The flavor was sweet and earthy with a hint of cream, and the lavender lingered delicately on my tongue after each spoonful. It was absolutely delicious. My mother and I both wished we had ordered the bowl instead of the cup. Their warm herb bread served with olive oil was a perfect accompaniment to the soup.

Mom followed her soup with the herb chicken salad. Made with crisp lettuce, tangy cherry tomatoes, red onion, and tender chicken, it was topped with creamy herb dressing. I ordered a panini with buffalo mozzarella, thinly-sliced tomato, and basil leaves, pressed between two slices of crusty french bread. The only thing wrong with this sandwich was that it made me wish for summer.

Passionfruit Sorbet served in a punch glass.

We joined in our hopes for warmer weather by sharing a passionfruit sorbet. Subtly flavored and perfectly frozen, it was served in a dainty punch glass. A splendid end to a fantastic lunch, and all for just $24. I noticed they still had the soup on special today, so get by Starving Artist Cafe and hope they have some tomorrow.

Comments

I love Starving Artists. I had lunch there yesterday and sometimes I will go there for dinner after playing golf.

I like their soups but the lavender carrot soup sounded awful to me.

My eyebrows definitely raised when she said "lavender" and "carrot" together. I was surprised to find the lavender was not overwhelming or perfume-y at all. The carrot soup would have been delicious on its own, but the lavender really did something amazing to it.
