Tweet: Head cheese

The Arkansas Blog is Twittering. We use it as a news alert, not an internal monologue. Mostly.

But I was happy to see us added to the Twitter following of the Capital Bar and Grill. It's using the message service to talk about lunch specials and stuff.

Like: Home-made head cheese. (See photo at its page.) Sign me up for that.

Does anyone know of a local market that makes a good head cheese? My husband and I love the head cheese from Langenstein's on Magazine Street in New Oreans. It is always a stop we make on the way back to Little Rock. We purchase it in 5 pound blocks. Either regular or spicy, you can't go wrong. We have instroduced many friends to the stuff through the years. Most of them swore that they would never like it and are instantly convinced otherwise.

Wish I did, Eldee. I had my first experience with head cheese a couple of weeks ago at Cochon in New Orleans (which I HIGHLY recommend). It was fabulous! I'll have to take a trip to the Capital Bar & Grill to give it a try.

I grew up in SW La. and every neighborhood market made great head cheese. I haven't found its equal in Ark. But, don't shoot me now: Kroger sells a spicy brand of "souse" in among the lunchmeat that is nothing but head cheese by its Midwestern name. And it's not too bad.
