On hearing the words "Branson" and "food" together, one might conjure up imades of gravy soaked breakfast platters, heavy carb buffets and rich and nutty fudge. But on my most recent visit I discovered more refined delights at Chateau on the Lake, large meaty eats at Montana Mike's, and velvety and sumptuous soups at the new Silver Dollar City Culinary & Craft School (Potato Leek Soup pictured above). The Meat Shoppe, the fine meat, barbecue and poultry institution from Gravel Ridge, is coming to Little Rock. Owner Kent Berry said that their new store in the River Market -- to be called “Kent’s Downtown” -- should be open by mid-May in time for Riverfest. For those familiar with the River Market, Kent’s Downtown will reside in the space once occupied by Shaka’s Smoke Lounge, which recently closed after more than ten years there.
Berry said that Kent’s Downtown will serve all the goodies The Meat Shoppe in Gravel Ridge is known for, including ribs, pulled pork, smoked chicken, turnip greens, baked beans and other fixins. Like the store in Gravel Ridge, Berry said the Little Rock incarnation will also sell fine cuts of beef – including thick-cut and marinated steaks -- as well as chicken, pork and several varieties of sausage. I had one of their marinated T-bones at a friend’s house a few weeks back, and I’m here to tell you that it was, hand’s down, the best steak I’ve every had, anywhere, in my life – even in a restaurant. It sure wasn’t my friend’s grillwork that made it amazing, so I’m now a firm believer in Meat Shoppe steaks.
And don’t fret, Gravel Ridgers, Berry said the original “flagship store” will stay open.

It's a beautiful day in the River Market neighborhood, where the 35th Annual Little Rock Farmers Market is now underway. Early morning light saw about a dozen well-supplied vendors with loads of fresh fruits and veggies quietly offering their goods to passers by. A little spit of rain didn't really seem to bother anyone out for the pick of the crop this morning. It's still early for most of Arkansas' crops, but there were Cabot strawberries and greenhouse tomatoes and all sorts of onions and leeks and greens. Here too is a good place to pick up three to six inch starter plants for the garden, beautiful hanging baskets for Mother's Day, and cypress wood products. The early morning crowd was rather pleasant, and a scone from Old Mill Bakery and a cuppa from Coast Cafe just topped everything off nicely. Not only was I able to cinch some beautiful produce pics, but I came home with some of the bounty -- green tomatoes, sweet potatoes, glossy cucumbers and roly poly wax potatoes. For the Farmers Market at the Little Rock River Market. The big season opens at seven this morning. Not only is it the 35th anniversary of the Little Rock Farmers Market (wow, I didn't know it was almost as old as I am!), there's all sorts of neat stuff going on -- including appearances by two of the chefs from Bravo Network's Top Chef program from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lots of great offers and several days of celebration to follow. We would be remiss if we didn't note the opening of the Certified Arkansas Farmers Market Saturday morning at 6th and Main in North Little Rock. This week's opening features: strawberries, greens, onions, eggs, meats, squash, radishes, cut flowers, plant starts, baked goods and fresh-brewed coffee. The market will be open 7 a.m. to noon and will meet every Tuesday and Saturday from now through the end of summer. More information available at the CAFM website.

Chasing the elusive food bargain? I have over the past couple of years been asked to pontificate on matters monetary... as in "where do you get those great deals?"
